FROM THE CHAIR – HAPPY HOLIDAYS! John Long, Chair, and Ronald Mitchum, Chair-Elect

The December meeting will be held at The Confluence Park Restaurant. It will feature Jack Pounds, the President of the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council, a partnership among Ohio's chemical companies which promotes better understanding of the industry and represents its interests in the public policy arena. He will discuss with us one of the most pressing industrial challenges in today’s industrial chemical complex. His presentation, Security in the Chemical Industry: The Most Serious Challenge to the Industry in Decades, will guide us through how industry is meeting the demands of the post-911 era.

In November we had a very well attended general meeting at Ashland Chemical. Dr. Luca Fontana of Ashland made his staff and the facility available for an excellent tour prior to dinner. Dr. Darcy Culkin of the Ashland Performance Materials Global Technology - Composite Polymers Division gave us an excellent review of polymers made of sustainable materials. This green chemistry approach to the industrial production of polymers holds an exciting future which is both sustainable and product friendly.

In late October and early November the Section also arranged for two ACS tour speakers to provide lectures to students and faculty at OSU and at Denison. Both meetings were well attended and provided the Section with an opportunity to present our ACS student affiliate program. We would like to thank Dr. Patrick Woodward of OSU and Dr. Peter Kuhlman of Denison for arranging the meetings.

National Chemistry Week demonstrations were held at the Columbus Public Library on October 27. This year’s theme was The Many Faces of Chemistry. Committee members John Blaha, Mike Clingerman, George Greene, and Jeff Trent organized a wonderful program which was attended by many young chemists from the local area. George Greene made arrangements with the COSI-On-Wheels program to have a series of hands-on demonstrations provided by COSI at the event and made arrangements with the Columbus Public Library to allow the demonstrations and show to be held in the Auditorium at the Main Public Library in Downtown Columbus. John arranged sponsorship of the event with GFS Chemicals and GFS provided a grant of $750 to defray cost of the COSI demonstration, THANK YOU GFS. Jeff Trent provided many amusements for children. The most popular of these were the balls and balloons that children never tire of playing with.

Many of our volunteers participated in the program and manned the experimental booth areas. We want to thank John, Mike, George, Jeff and the volunteer participants for making NCW a success again this year. To recognize John for his wonderful service to the Society, he will be presented with a plaque at the December meeting.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

JACK R. POUNDS PRESIDENT, OHIO CHEMISTRY TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL

Jack Pounds, a native of Cambridge, Ohio, is President of the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC). OCTC is the statewide trade association representing chemistry technology companies conducting research, production, and marketing/sales operations in Ohio. The organization has more than 80 members, including the leading companies in the industry, as well as firms providing consulting and other services to the industry.

Jack joined OCTC in early 2000, bringing more than 25 years of experience in the chemical industry. In May 2001, the Board of Directors elected him President and Chief Operating Officer. His areas of expertise include advocacy in the legislative and regulatory arenas, management of public issues, crisis management, and media and community relations. His career has included public affairs positions with Hercules, Incorporated, BetzDearborn, Inc., and Rohm and Haas Company.

The American Chemical Society: Improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry. His role at OCTC is to represent Ohio’s chemistry industry in the public arena, to develop and execute an advocacy program to enhance the business climate for OCTC members in the state of Ohio, and to support the industry’s efforts to work with state leaders to assure strong protection of Ohio’s people and natural resources.

In October 2003, Ohio Governor Bob Taft appointed him to serve as a member of State of Ohio Emergency Planning Commission. He is a trustee of the Ohio Alliance for Civil Justice, a member of the Columbus Athletic Club, and a member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK ROUNDUP By Professors John Blaha and Jeff Trent

Editor’s Note: Once again, the chemistry demonstrations at the Main Branch of Columbus Metropolitan Library were the centerpiece of the Section’s observance of National Chemistry Week. The following article, compiled from reports by John and Jeff, summarizes the events of the day.

Main Event: Saturday, October 27, 2007 10AM to 4PM Location: Columbus Public Library Auditorium, Main Branch, Downtown Columbus. Hands-On Demonstrations provided by COSI. Sponsorship: GFS Chemicals provided a generous grant of $750 to defray cost of the COSI demonstration. Rose Smith of COSI brought in the COSI-On-Wheels program and set up the following interactive stations for children of all ages to experience. 1. pH color changes using a universal indicator. 2. Phases of Matter (solids, liquids and gases): a reaction of sodium carbonate, calcium chloride, and water. 3. Slime: the perennial favorite activity. 4. Magic Writing: phenolphthalein solution is used to write a message or draw a picture. The paper is allowed to dry and a cotton

swab is used to apply a solution of sodium bicarbonate to change the message/drawing red. Information and interactive learning activities for adults and children on careers involving chemistry were arranged in posters and displays designed by Jeff Trent from materials provided by the American Chemical Society and Columbus State Community College. These were displayed around the auditorium.

A dozen Molecular Model Kits were sent UPS overnight to "Professor Jeff" on Tuesday, October 23rd so structures could be built to fit the different Careers in Chemistry. With 1200 colored spheres one can build many structures: Morphine, Caffeine, Nicotine, Capsaicin, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Zingerone, piperine, Sucrose, Glucose, Deoxyribose, Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine, Testosterone, Estradiol, and more. During the Library event, visitors matched the molecular structures with ones drawn on paper (worked great and generated surprising interest). One girl built the huge molecular structure of Beta-Carotene to match the drawn structure with assistance from her father, a chemist. This was added to the NCW display.

The American Chemical Society Columbus Section Display included Trifold displays of All 13 Chemistry Career profiles from October Journal of Chemical Education, and the Celebrating Chemistry Careers, a collection of at least a dozen different ACS Journals displayed in support of the variety of Chemistry Careers featured. A Giant Periodic Table surrounded by Plants, and colorful Hoberman Sphere

An ACS Columbus Section trifold display described the Mission and Functions of the Columbus Section including all committees and leadership names listed on the http://membership.acs.org/C/COLU/ website.

We had an ornamental pepper plant next to Capsaicin molecule, a pack of cigarettes next to Nicotine, a Coffee Cup next to Caffeine; Vitamin C and Citric Acid sitting on top of a bag of Oranges, Beta Carotene sitting next to four large carrots end to end (It's a long molecule!), a DNA double Helix, a piperine molecule next to a bottle of pepper and salt (to emphasize the molecules placed on the breakfast table), Zingerone next to a bag of ginger, and other molecules on display.

We captured interest at many levels based on student experience. If already exposed to the A - T, G - C pairs in DNA, we emphasized the structures of Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thymine. If they are younger we just showed the DNA structure and the molecular pairs saying that these colorful structures are what make your hair and eyes similar to your parents...

We passed out The Many Faces of Chemistry, "Your Photo Here” cards, CCED Celebrating Chemistry (to emphasize "Earth Day Every Day"), temporary tattoos, free CAS 100yr Anniversary coloring books and crayons featuring unique CAS Registered structures to color, and the Dodecahedron from October JCE with ten faces from the featured chemistry career profiles.

Columbus State Community College provided DNA double Helix display along with Circulatory System, Heart, and Head displays and a full size Human Skeleton from the Nursing Labs. GFS sponsored COSI on Wheels for the hands-on activities. "Professor Jeff" shared his personal collection of Molecular Structures to fit the Careers featured in the theme, The Many Faces of Chemistry. And the Columbus Section filled over half the auditorium with ACS displays.

The following members and friends of the Section graciously served as volunteers at this event:

SECTION DONATES PERCY JULIAN DVD TO COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY As an additional part of the NCW celebration, a DVD copy of the Nova program Percy Julian, Forgotten Genius was presented to the Columbus Metropolitan Library and was accepted by Mr. David Dennison, Manager of the Audio/Visual Division. The presentation was made by Jeff Trent and Maria Rosenthal (photo by Steve Rosenthal):

His house was firebombed. He lost his job on the eve of the Depression. He took on powerful, entrenched interests in the scientific establishment and overcame countless obstacles to become a world-class chemist, a self-made millionaire, and a humanitarian. Yet despite his achievements, Percy Julian’s story is largely unknown.

The grandson of Alabama slaves, Julian broke the color barrier in American science more than a decade before Jackie Robinson did in baseball. A brilliant innovator, he discovered a way to turn soybeans into synthetic steroids on an industrial scale, helping to make drugs like cortisone available to millions.

In Forgotten Genius, a special two-hour presentation starring Tony-award winning actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson, NOVA brings Julian’s scientific breakthroughs and gripping biography to life, with vivid period reenactments based on newly opened family archives and interviews with dozens of colleagues and relatives.

Special DVD features include: materials and activities for educators; a link to the NOVA Web site; scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired.

YOUNGER CHEMISTS COMMITTEE By Julia Moniaci, YCC Chair

We are in the processing of revamping the Columbus Section Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) to begin the new year. Below is some information on the committee. This group is for you and will be what you make of it, so any feedback would be great! About the YCC The American Chemical Society Younger Chemists Committee was formed to identify the needs and concerns of younger chemists and to develop programs responsive to their needs. We are driven by these goals:

Make the ACS relevant to younger chemists. Increase the involvement of younger chemists in the ACS at all levels. Develop mechanisms to integrate younger chemists into the profession. Serve as a networking tool for young chemists.

What are younger chemists? One YCC member coined the definition: Young professionals or students interested in networking in the scientific community.

Below is the link to the YCC homepage: http://membership.acs.org/y/ycc/default.htm. For more information about the Columbus Section’s YCC, please contact Julia Moniaci, YCC Chair, at 614.776.3243.

YCC is a Joint Board-Council committee of the ACS whose members represent industry, government, and academe. Committee members are appointed for three-year terms by the ACS President and Chairman of the Board. The Committee holds executive and open sessions at each ACS national meeting, and any interested chemist is welcome to participate.
