This Saturday, October 29, we’re having a party - Trunk or Treat that is.
From 2:30 to 4:30 we’ll have games, food, Trunk or Treat and lots of fun. I
hope our whole church family will turn out for this party.
Did you know that the name “Halloween” actually has Christian origins?
The ancient Celts of Ireland and the British Isles had a festival of Samhain
(pronounced sow-hen). Samhain marked the end of summer and
preparations for winter. Winter was harsh, resources could be scarce and
survival was tenuous. The festival of Samhain acknowledged that just as
the warmth and bounty of summer gives way to the cold and scarcity of
winter, human life also gives way to death.
Around AD 300 Saint Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. Gradually, the Gospel
spread throughout the British Isles. Typical to Christianity's spread to new cultures, the church put a
Christian slant on existing holidays. Samhain was no different. All Saints Day, celebrated since the
7th century, came to fall on November 1, the day after Samhain. And Samhain was renamed All Hal-
lows’ eve, or Halloween. Hallow is an archaic word for Saint, so “Halloween” literally means “All
Saints Eve.”
Okay, enough of the History Lesson. Find a zany costume and come join your church family for
Trunk or Treat this Saturday, October 29 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM here at the church. See you there.
Shalom,
Matt

Matthew T. Robinson,
