W elcome to the July and August edition of The

Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.

As some of you know, I work these days at The View, Epping Forest’s new visitor centre. Well, I was working there the other day, dispensing wisdom and lavishing customer care on all and sundry, when a colleague said that she had found my ideal role.

“Hmm,” I thought. “An important post that re-quires my especial flair."

“You’ve drifted off again, David” she said. “We wanted someone who’s really… um… portly.”

“Thanks,” I said. “Furthermore, they should have a certain - let's say

- Tudor whiff. And be very grumpy. You seemed perfect.”

For four days, from Tuesday August 20th to Friday 23rd, from 1pm-4pm at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, the City of London is staging a series of

events entitled ‘1589 and all that’. Tuesday will be 'The Armadas' - games, handicrafts and the story of the second Armada. Wednesday focuses on the lost Roanoke colony with hut-building and a moustache com-petition. Thursday is 'The Quick and the Dead', exploring Tudor medicines and mortality. Friday will look at Courtly

Entertainments, with music, quilling and hobby horse jousts. Plus, there will be loads of other things going on throughout, like bread kneading, pastels, calligra-phy and games.

I shall be Henry VIII, who was long gone by 1589. I may, however, shower gifts on my people and make jokes in Latin. I shall be joined by Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn, wenches and a right ne’er-do-well in the pillory.

Do come along. These events are always fantastic. I’ve got to prepare for my role now, by banqueting to excess. Someone has to do it.

I didn’t always edit magazines badly. Oh no. For a long time I did other things badly, and the thing that I did badly for most of my adult years was to

be one of those unseen creatures that produce over-night that staple of the breakfast table. No no, you silly thing, I wasn’t a battery hen. I printed newspa-pers. Rather badly. To be precise, I operated a web press using offset lithography, which makes me sound rather cleverer than I actually am. And, in my modest way, I saw myself as the culmination of 2,000 years of progress.

If we define printing as transferring an image or words onto a different medium, then the process goes back to about 200AD in China and the use of wood-blocks. (Obviously I wasn’t there – I had the night off to decorate my hut with daub.)

The next great step forward came 800 years later, again in China, with the use of movable type. This is the process of using single components – usually letters – that are both movable and reusable to pro-duce a document over and over again, then take it apart and use the letters for a different document. This was, however, expensive and time-consuming, especially in China with a thousand characters to play with.

Johannes Gutenberg is regarded as the father of modern printing, although he was also a blacksmith and a goldsmith, and would probably have been any number of other smiths besides, had there been a need for them in 1450. He made many refinements to the process, but the key ones were the use of oil-based inks and the introduction of a wooden press upon which to lay the paper to receive the ink.

Raised type would be arranged into pages then placed into a frame which was laid onto a stone bed.

Two roller pads of wool applied ink to the text in a more even way than had previously been possible. A sheet of paper was placed in a frame and was rolled under the inked text. Mass production of texts and leaflets became possible, and, by 1480, there were printing presses in over a hundred towns across Europe.

A by-product of this revolution was the emergence of the best-seller, the first of whom was probably the theologian Erasmus who sold almost a million copies of his works in his lifetime.

Another by-product was the newspaper, which could now be produced in great quantity at relatively low cost.

Now there may be some cynics amongst you who think that we might be better off without certain best-sellers and newspapers. But think of the good things that printing has done for us. Had it not been for Gutenberg, we might never have had this magnificent magazine of ours.

the use of a smooth surface to convey the image, and began in 1796 to publish plays with images etched into wax. Modern lithography uses photographic plates where ink is drawn towards images and text. I also proudly declared that I was an offset printer, which is not a reflection on my awkward gait but refers to the technique by which the image is transferred firstly to an intermediate rubber blanket before being im-pressed onto the paper.

French printers realised that certain phrases were used over and over, so they kept these sets of words in preset slices, which were called ‘cliches’ or ‘stereotypes’. I have proudly used clichés all my life.

Lithography moved forward in 1843 with the inven-tion of the rotary press where the image is bent around a drum. This allowed a continuous stream of paper, or web, to flow from a reel through the im-pression cylinders before being folded together on the kite – that’s the pointed bit that they show on TV when they mention printing – before being cut into individual copies.

Machines got bigger and faster and smarter so that, by the time I hung up my spanner, a 100 page colour newspaper would churn out of the press at about 20 copies per second while I was cocooned inside a soundproof booth with a bloke who brought in lamb casserole every night while computers did everything else. For me, a lot of the interest went out of the job,

and I became faintly nauseous at the thought of stewed lamb.

My career changed when the owners of this publi-cation called.

“David,” they said. “We badly need someone to edit the Directory. And we mean badly.”

“On it, I replied without pause. “Everything I do, I do badly.”

E very year millions of people lose money through scams. We are all potential tar-gets for the criminals who might try to

scam us. This simple checklist will help you protect yourself and fight back against the scammers.

How can I spot a scam? It is likely to be a scam if: The call, letter, email or text has come out of

the blue. You’ve never heard of the lottery or competi-

tion they are talking about. You didn’t buy a ticket – so you can’t win it! They are asking you to send money in ad-

vance. They are telling you to respond quickly so you

don’t get time to think about it or ask family and friends before you decide.

They are telling you to keep it a secret. They seem to be offering you something for

nothing. If it seems too good to be true – it probably is!

How can I protect myself bet-ter? Never give out contact details like your name,

phone number or address to strangers or to people who should have this information al-ready.

Never give financial information or details of your identity, bank accounts or credit card to strangers or to the businesses that already hold your details.

Shred anything with your personal or bank details on – don’t just throw it away.

What should I do if they con-tact me? Look at every piece of mail and decide if it’s

likely to be a scam. Don’t reply to spam mail, texts or emails. Say ”no thank you” politely and put the phone

down if they persist. Phone the Citizens Advice consumer service

D ance is a type of art that involves move-

ment of the body to music. It is performed in many styles as a form of emotional expression, social interaction, or exercise and is some-times used to express ideas or tell a story.

A high percentage of their work comes from recommendations and refer-ences. Michael’s wife, Elizabeth is responsible for the office work, answering the phone and dealing with the paperwork. Elizabeth keeps portfolios and files of letters and references from customers. These are available on request if you are considering having some roofing work done. S ummer is usually about sun, sea, sand and... yep, sequels. However, some-thing is missing this sunny season as there is a prequel, a ‘re-envisioning’, a spin-off and a clever original for you to see. And only a couple of se-

quels like Grown Ups 2 (9th August) which if that means another film like 2010’s Grown Ups then it’s not worth watching anyway. Enjoy! Released: 3rd July - Now You See Me An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track 4 illusionists who carry out bank heists during their shows. But the magicians give the money to their audiences. The plot is both thrilling and fascinating as the investigation uncovers dark secrets, hidden agendas and one great puzzle: the closer you look, the less you see. However, the cast is not A-list and there is little character development or empathy. This makes the film entertaining, fun and an interesting concept but with a vital ingredient missing. 12th July - Monsters University This is a prequel to Pixar Studio’s 2001 hit Monsters Inc. A young Mike Wazowski, the green, one-eyed creature from the previous film, dreams of becoming a ‘scarer’ at Monsters Inc. The problem is he can’t scare anyone. Mike teams up with John P. ‘Sully’ Sullivan to graduate with flying colours and a life-long friendship is born. With the right amount of entertainment, sentimentality and comedy this is a movie every bit as impres-sive as the film it follows.

16th August - Planes In Pixar Studios ‘Cars’ and ‘Cars 2’ we saw airplanes come alive like their auto-mobile counterparts. This film builds on that idea. Dusty is a crop dusting plane who dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. However, he is afraid of heights. With his mentor Skipper and a host of new friends, Dusty sets off to make his dreams come true. The plot is that contrived (guess if Dusty suc-ceeds...) and this is not made by Pixar but “DisneyToons” - beware. 23rd August - Jurassic Park 3D One of the greatest films of the modern era is given a 3D make-over. First things first - the film is not ‘better’ than before. The plot is still the same and is just as engaging as you see man’s failure to play God. But the 3D aspect blends perfectly with the dinosaur special effects. This brings extra life to 20 year old CGI (that even in 2D is still better than some films today) and who doesn’t want to see a T-Rex jump out of the screen?

DVDs to please You may not want to keep the kids in during July but if this summer is anything like the last one you may not have any choice. At least you will have lots to keep them entertained. Oz the Great and Power-ful (1st July on DVD rrp: £19.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £28.99) is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and is a thrilling family adventure. Ewan McGregor stars in Jack The Giant Slayer (22nd July on DVD rrp: £19.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £28.99) as the classic fairy tale has an exciting make-over. One Direction: Life on Stage (12th July on DVD rrp: £9.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £15.99) and All Stars (26th July on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) have all the music and dance entertainment you’ll ever need.

I n this book, the reader is introduced to some fascinating concepts. We are told at the

outset that 'the darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis' and 'ignorance is no longer a forgivable offense'!. The question is posed: 'What if God was wrong'? In that case, 'Abandon hope all you who enter here' is an appropriate quote from Dante's Divine Comedy (which is not a comedy at all) and we are all on the brink of certain doom whether or not Robert Langdon catches the Transhumanists or not. However, he is hot on the heels of a man with concerns about escalation of consumerism, and who has some good Population Apocalypse Equations! There are some good lines about water requirements, global surface temperature, ozone depletion, consumption of ocean resources, species extinction, carbon dioxide saturation and deforestation. Some of the characters are as extraordinary as their ideals: the enigmatic Sienna Brooks, the odd Elizabeth Sinskey, the dedicated scientist, Bertrand Zobrist whose green eyes 'held all the mysteries of the world in their depths', but in this novel no-one is as you would expect, not even Robert Langdon!

There are lots of twists in the plot, as one would expect from Dan Brown. 'Symbols are very adept at hiding the truth' evidently and we are pushed into examining our expectations and assumptions, and also into considering some upside down morality codes and, of course, nothing is ever as it appears to be! Chapters race

like jet fighters as we are presented with a death by shooting on the first page, Robert Langdon's life is hanging by a thread by page two, only to be rescued by a heroine, a Lara Croft character on page three, and so, by the end of the book, we have been up for several nights facing the most horrendous death imaginable every minute. The book is a joy for researchers (Loreena McKennett is Robert Langdon's favourite living recording artist, and Bombay Sapphire and Gogol should never be mixed!) For those who have visited

Venice, Florence and Istanbul, the descriptions of these places are a joy. Fiat! 'Sing in me muse and through me tell the story'.... Exhausting - but wonderful - and I'm signing up for my tattoo because it's all so true, and so real that I was almost in tears due to the successful outcome!

Age: All ages welcome REDBRIDGE CYCLING CLUB invites cyclists of all abilities, men and women, to join them on their club rides each Sun-day leaving Redbridge Cycling centre, Forest Road, Hainault, IG6 3HP (On Hog Hill). Instruction on group riding will be given to less experience or novice riders at the cycle cen-tre fifteen minutes prior to departure. Introductory cycling sessions are also organised periodically.
