The Cholmondeley Family have lived at Cholmondeley inCheshire since 1200. The present Castle was built in the early19th century by the 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley, and hasbeen home to successive generations. Lavinia DowagerMarchioness, wife of the 6th Marquess, lived at CholmondeleyCastle until her death in November 2015. Her son David, the 7thMarquess, and his family live at Houghton Hall in Norfolk anddivide their time between Norfolk and Cheshire.
The Dowager spent the greater part of her life creatingthese magnificent gardens, a legacy which continues today.Whatever the season there are always plants and shrubs inflower from early bulbs through different types of Magnolia,Camellia, Azalea and Rhododendron, a very fine Davidiainvolucrata in the Glade and varieties of Cornus andspecimen trees.
Visitors enter by the Deer Park Mere, home to many differentwaterfowl and freshwater fish. Those who take advantage of thepicnic site and children’s play area can walk around the lake andenjoy splendid views of the Castle, which stands dramatically onthe hill.

St. Nicholas Family Chapelis situated in the Parkaccessed either by car or onfoot and is well worth a visit to admire its stained glass altarwindow, ornate panelling and peaceful atmosphere.
Children will enjoy theopen spaces, hiddenpaths, play areas and theAdventure Den locatednear the Tea Room.
Cholmondeley Castle Farm Shop is situated near the CastleGardens exit and offers superb locallyproduced food and everyday essentials.

A path leads fromthe recentlyreplanted RoseGarden, with over350 roses and a new100m long doubleherbaceous border,through a sandstoneGatehouse into theTemple Garden.With its small lake and two islands the garden is enclosed by finespecimen trees and many varieties of shrubs which changedramatically with the seasons.
The Folly Garden hasrecently beenextended, with newwoodland borders. A feature of the gardenis the Gothic “ruin”,constructed out of local red sandstone.

There are landscape features that includeshallow, but sheer drops. Care should be taken around trees. Please notethere are water hazards within the grounds and parental supervision isrequired at all times. Owing to the ground levels, shale pathways etc, someof the areas may be restricted for wheelchair access.
