This weekend begins another special season for our church and many of those we hold so dear.

Church camps.

I am so proud of our church for its own commitment of No Child Left Behind when it comes to church camp opportunity. Half scholarship for all, more when needed provides for scores of children and youth the opportunity to go away and focus on faith.

And that time is vitally important.

Other commitments of parents and adult sponsors, even willing bus drivers, all working in concert to make these weeks of camp accessible, well sponsored and fully funded.

Because camp makes a difference.

My experience tells me that as much as 70% of those called into ministry first hear that call at church camp.

Other changes can also be revealed while away on spiritual retreat.

At every church I’ve served and every camp I’ve worked I always hear how God is in a special place, like no other…

…and I just smile and nod, that yes, God is here. But I’ve been to enough camp settings to know no one place has a unique lock on God’s presence.

God is where people plan and hope for God. God is where folks stop the distractions and business of the liv-ing to see and hear God. God is revealed when we pray, reflect, seek and hope.

In a perfect world, we should all go to camp…as often as we possibly can.

To all those outbound to camp this week, look for God. You won’t be disappointed.

It is camp time! The Youth of FCC will be leaving for Ceta Canyon Monday, June 13, at noon. Over the week we will be exploring the theme “Who is my Neighbor?” The whole week is building on what I like to call the Double Love Commandment.

We will use this “double” idea in several ways. Everything that we do for the week will be done in “pairs”. For example, we will ask campers to think about making TWO CHANGES each day, with a focus on making changes that lead toward that place where they can both receive and provide the transformational Grace that Jesus works so hard to illustrate in the stories we will talk about all week. “Come and See” is an invitation to be in faithful relationship with God via Jesus the Christ. We proclaim that Jesus is the revelation of God and in following him, we can better understand God. In John’s gospel, the invitation, “come and see” is initiated by Jesus. That is a lot for a week at camp. As you can see, we have not run away from the hard stuff. We have created worships, keynoters, and Bible studies around “Who is my Neighbor?” Camp starts Monday, June 13, at 4:00 p.m. and ends Saturday June 18, at 10:00 a.m.. Spend time in prayer next week for our campers; lift up our small group meeting times, worship, keynoters, and the camp community. Pray for our adults, campers, and bus drivers.

Vacation Bible School June 20-24 5:30-8:30pm Age 3—Grade 5 Register Today

They have more energy than a nuclear power plant and are as confounding as the federal budget. They have tastes as fluid as the Missouri River and dreams that will redefine the future. They are a marketer’s pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and the most lovable and frustrating beings you will ever come to know and love.

I’m talking about children. You don’t have to look too hard to find them. They come in all shapes and sizes, in many colors and are distributed indiscriminately across the world. Our children will define the future, which makes them our most significant and enduring legacy. The world is becoming more complex, but kids maintain the same basic needs as they have for decades: to be trusted, to be loved, to feel safe and to identify a significant purpose in life. We can strive to give our children all the advantages the world has to offer and to motivate them to make the most of available opportunities and resources; but unless their spiritual life is prioritized and nurtured, they will miss out on much of the meaning, purpose and joy of life. In less than two weeks Vacation Bible School will begin. These beautiful gifts from God that I just described will fill our campus not only with their presence, but with their laughter, their questions, their energy and excitement. During this week we will be blessed with the opportunity to love, accept and nurture not only our own children but those from the community. We will have the opportunity to tell them about God’s great love and how much He loves them. We will have the opportunity to not only serve but to show them through our words and actions the difference that Jesus Christ can make in our lives. It promises to be a week filled with fun, fellowship, and most importantly of all, either introducing children to God or nurturing that relationship. Don’t wait to be invited to participate. Come, just simply come. There is a place at the table for all. In loving partnership,

Mixed Blessings Sunday School News

Since the sudden and unexpected passing of our teacher Bill Bucy, the Mixed Blessings Sunday School class has struggled to decide how to proceed. We have elected to continue and would like to extend an open invitation to anyone who is interested in studying the Bible through a weekly series of DVD programs that will last approximate-ly thirty minutes each week. This will allow time to gather and share concerns, watch the DVD and discuss for a few minutes after each session. We will begin with the Old Testament on June 12, which is a series of 24 lectures by Professor Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University Divinity School.

Even if you know the Old Testament well, you will find it enlightening to hear Professor Levine discuss how it appears against the larger background of the ancient Near East as revealed by research in archaeology, cross-cultural studies and comparative religion.

We expect to start the New Testament shortly after Thanksgiving.

Please join us this Sunday in the Bedford Room (room 102) at the southeast corner of the campus at 10am.
