Tips for Choosing SessionsTo find topics easily, the following symbols are used:
* Infant/Toddler † Christian Preschool ◊ Administrative
If session has no symbol then training is appropriate for all.
• Carefully examine the choices at each session time. Decide the exact seminars you wish to attend ahead of time and record these on the “Plan Your Day” sheet (page 7).
• Sessions are considered full once all seats are taken. Volunteers may assist you in finding another session if your original choice is full. For safety reasons, rooms cannot go beyond capacity. However, participants can always find room in the Sanctuary or Fellowship Hall to hear the Keynote speakers.
• A variety of featured speakers will be offered each day. These speakers are nationally recognized and many have traveled from other states to participate. Be sure to consider attending their sessions.
• Seminars with Christian content are not approved by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) or the Missouri Professional Development System.
• All participants who work in a licensed program in Missouri must have a MOPD ID# issued by OPEN in order to have their training hours recorded into the system. If you have not registered for this number yet, go to www.openinitiative.org/MOPDIDsignUp.aspx. If you did not include your MOPD ID# on your conference registration, please bring it with you to the conference. Each class session will have a MOPD ID# sign-in sheet. You will receive stickers at registration with your name and MOPD ID# on them. After each session, you will need to put your MOPD ID# sticker on the sign in sheet so that you receive training credit for that session.
• The Attendance Certificate is on page 31 of this handbook. Use this to keep track of your professional development training hours. You must collect a sticker at the end of each seminar to document your training hours. Be sure to collect the sticker before you leave the session because no replacement stickers will be available later.
• All seminars have been identified with their Core Competency areas:
I Child Growth and Development
II Learning Environment and Curriculum
III Child Observation and Assessment
IV Families and Communities
V Health, Safety, and Nutrition
VI Interactions with Children
VII Program Planning and Development
VIII Professional Development and Leadership
• Room temperatures vary, so be sure to dress in layers!

Wednesday KeynoteBuilding a Sense of Community: Ensuring Every Child Is Treasured

The early childhood classroom should be a community of learners. How can we develop a classroom environment that supports children with varying abilities, talents, and diverse experiences? How can we demonstrate respect for all children and their families?
Let’s examine ways to enrich your classroom environment, displays, activities, and centers to encourage the development of connections to create a community of learners. Find ways to help children recognize their important contribution to this place and group.
Discover ways to build on children’s strengths, capabilities, and uniqueness so all members can be appreciated and valued. Learn books, songs, centers, and drama that will build the bonds of your special community.
MO/KS Core Competency II
Extreme Makeovers In Real Early Childhood Classrooms ◊Session 4, 6
4 Sanctuary, 6 Fellowship Hall
The environment of a classroom has tremendous impact on what children do in that space. It influences what children learn, who they participate with, and what activities they choose. The environment can nurture the social and emotional development of young children as they live in this classroom. Discover how to create the “best” environment for young children that matches their way of learning and inspires their growing capabilities. Discover how over 25 preschool teachers changed their classrooms to make them exciting and interesting places that children can enjoy. Gain several ideas that you can use too!
MO/KS Core Competency II
Small Group, Big Learning: Making Learning Centers Work Session 5, 10
5 Sanctuary, 10 Fellowship Hall
Learn how to make small groups work effectively, provide choices, and encourage language development. Investigate learning centers that can be used throughout the year and those that can add new interest to the children. Discover how small groups can strengthen the development of young children’s abilities in all domains including: cognition, language, social skills, and physical development. Discuss space, layout, and how to provide appropriate materials that will engage young children in meaningful activity. Gain insight into making every center a literacy space that includes opportunities for communication, writing, and reading. Look inside learning centers with visuals that demonstrate how children are learning and gain evidence of their growing abilities. Leave with new ideas for making your learning centers work well for you and the children in your classroom.
MO/KS Core Competency II
Getting the Core of Literacy: Speaking, Reading and Writing Session 7, 9
