President’s Report 15-11-2016

We had our second club fellowship at Crave Restaurant, Boronia. Twenty eight of us gathered at the restaurant at 6.30 pm for good fellowship and fun. Everyone was allowed to choose his or her own meal for dinner. Food was excellent and too filling for some. Hence, there was nothing to complain about. After dinner we were entertained with a slide presentation of Cheryl O’Neill’s 60 km group trek over 6 days in the gorge country in the Northern Territory. It was very enjoyable and fit for the occasion. Thank you very much Cheryl. The last group finally left at 10.00 pm. Thank you Ross Taylor for organizing the event. Thanks David Ferres for bringing along the equipment for the slide show.

When I reported on the Maroondah Festival, I omitted the names of 2 people in my list of thanks. Rowan Cole picked up the meat, bread, etc the previous day and then on the day, he delivered the bread to the site at 5.45 am and helped set up the stall. Jill Fletcher did her fair share of work frying the eggs, bacon and sausages. Thank you both for your great effort.

The Christmas Raffle sales went on at the Kalinda Primary School on Friday 11th evening and at the Warranwood and Yarra Road Primary Schools on Saturday 12th evening. Thank you all who took part in these sales. There is also an offer from Gladesville Primary School for 23rd November. The sales at the various Shopping Centres will start on 15th November and will end on 16th December with the draw at 6:00pm at the Croydon Central Shopping Centre. David will be making available the roster for you to fill in your names on the days when you can assist in selling tickets. All hands on deck please.

On Tuesday 15th November we will have Terry Bennett, Principal of Melba College, talking to us about the College. We have had a good working relationship with the College for some time now with, among others, the following: a) Incoming and Outgoing Youth Exchange students, b) Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants, c) Model United nations Assembly participants, d) host venue for Primary Schools Speech Competition, and e) the United Youth Media Program. We look forward to continuing that relationship. We also hope to form an Interact Club at the College.

Our Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday 22nd November 2016. The Nominating Committee has made their recommendations for your consideration and action. I would like to thank Jean Stuart for having finally agreed to put up her hand for the position of President Nominee. Well done Jean. After the AGM concludes, we will have the opportunity to listen to the promotion by our On-To-Conference 2017 Representative and Conference Organizing Committee member Stephen Bode. To round up the night, our senior member Past President Lyn Davies will take us down memory lane by talking about the history of the Rotary Club of Croydon and perhaps more interestingly about the Croydon community itself.

The District 4-Way Test Secondary Schools Speech Contest Finals will be hosted by us on Tuesday 29th November 2016 at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. As it is our meeting day, all of us, including our partners should make it a point to be there. Let us all be there to support Marlene and her team. A reminder, once again, that our personal contribution of a minimum of AUD 35.00 (USD 26.50) to commemorate the Centennial of The Rotary Foundation can be paid in to me or the Treasurer or into our Club Administration Account at the Bendigo Bank in November and December. I appeal to all members to contribute to your Foundation.

It has been agreed that our club will be joining the Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges to celebrate their 5th Club Anniversary on Tuesday 13th December 2016 (our regular meeting day). This event will be at the Chirnside Park Country Club with dinner at 7.30 pm. A flyer about this event is found elsewhere in this issue.

Cheers Joy Varughese

Dear fellow Rotarians,

At the 1917 Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Past President Arch C. Klumph proposed a

revolutionary idea: an endowment fund for the purpose of doing good in the world. Since then, The Rotary Foundation has grown tremendously and in many ways, serves as the foundation for Rotary as we know it today.

This November is particularly special for Rotary. We’re not just celebrating Foundation Month,

but also The Rotary Foundation’s centennial. There are many ways to join us in celebrating 100 years of changing lives and improving communities all over the world:

• Holding an event in your community will help you share all the good work you and your

fellow Rotarians have done thanks to the support of The Rotary Foundation. Additional information that can help you in planning your centennial event can be found on The Rotary Foundation Centennial website.

• • Your club can also plan and sponsor a project to address the needs of a community with locally raised funds or global grant funds. You can choose to help provide clean water, ensure basic education for young girls around the world, or tackle preventable diseases like malaria.

• In honor of the Foundation’s centennial, we have a set a $300 million fundraising goal. Your gift to the Foundation will not only go towards this goal, but help ensure an additional century of doing good in the world.

Our celebration will culminate in Atlanta, Georgia during the 2017 Rotary Convention. It’s only appropriate that we return to Atlanta a century later to celebrate our Foundation’s centennial and all the good work Rotarians around the world have done since then.

If you register by 15 December, you’ll still receive the special early-registration discount of

$340. One of the many events you can join us for is The Rotary Foundation’s 100th birthday party, a special event that will take place in the House of Friendship. Learn more about other

Foundation centennial events during the Convention here.

We can never truly quantify all that we have accomplished with the help of The Rotary

Foundation. What we do know is that if Arch Klumph were able to see the impact Rotary has had in the last century, he would be very proud. We hope that you’ll join in marking this historic occasion, as we come together and continue the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity.

Sincerely
