• Pergamum became no for its sensuous worship and an imperial cult, enforcing loyalty to the “Lord Caesar”.

• Local temples as legal centers for the region, test of loyalty that would challenge the faith of Christians, were simple to administer.

• What is learned about this church is that she was an ancient forebear of our modern tendencies towards religious compromise to try to keep peace among brethren.

2 Peter 2:12-1712 But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish. 13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad day-light. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you. 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop they never stop sinning; sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed — an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey — a beast without speech — who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness. 17 These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.(NIV)

Jude 11-1311 Woe to them! For they go the way of Cain, and abandon themselves to Balaam's error themselves to Balaam's error for the sake of gain, and perish in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are blemishes on your love-feasts, while they feast with you without fear, feeding themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the deepest darkness has been reserved forever. (NRSV)

Phil 1:1414 and most of the brothers and sisters, having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, dare to speak the word with greater boldness and without fear. (NRSV)

• Otherwise others became partakers of the evil deeds – 2 John 112 John 11(1 Cor 5:1-81 Cor 5:1-8)

The Lessons LearnedThe Lessons Learned

• We sometimes think we can hide from God – Job 34:22Job 34:22

• He is aware of our good deeds and our bad – 1 John 3:20; Luke 12:30-311 John 3:20; Luke 12:30-31

• Sometimes we become frustrated, it seems we are sowning good seed only to reap little in return, reap badly – we forget God gives the increase – 1 1 Corinthians 3:6-11 Corinthians 3:6-11 (Gal. 6:6-10Gal. 6:6-10)

Job 34:2222 There is no darkness nor shadow of death Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. hide themselves. (NKJV)1 John 3:2020 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.he knows everything. (NRSV)

Luke 12:30-3130 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these your Father knows that you need these things.things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. (NKJV)

1 Corinthians 3:6-116 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.but God gave the growth. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. 9 For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building. 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. (NRSV)

The Lessons LearnedThe Lessons Learned

• Living near Satan’s throne –many of our world leaders today maybe as evil as the Emperor was in the days of the church of Pergamum

• However imagine living in a country where worshiping Christ would have us put to death

• America condones homosexuality, fornication, serial divorce and remarriage, looking the other way at lying, cheating, laziness, foul language, dirty jokes, extramarital sex and the list goes on and on – 2 Peter 2:4-112 Peter 2:4-11

2 Peter 2:4-114 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of deepest darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 and if he did not spare the ancient world, even though he saved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood on a world of the ungodly; 6 and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction and made them an example of what is coming to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man greatly distressed by the licentiousness of the lawless 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by their lawless deeds that he saw and heard), 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment 10 — especially those who indulge their flesh in depraved lust, and who despise authority. Bold and willful, they are not afraid to slander the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not bring against them a slanderous judgment from the Lord. ( NRSV)

SummarySummary

• Pergamum was the church of subtle compromises, a group pretending to see and hear no evil, least they should be distracted enough to reject it and risk the disappointment and disapproval of the world

• And being faithful unto death – Revelation 2:10Revelation 2:10

Acts 2:3838 Then Peter said to them,"Repent, and let every one "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (NKJV)

Revelation 2:1010 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the I will give you the crown of life.crown of life. (NRSV)
