Dear Brothers & Sisters, In the Gospel reading this Sunday, Jesus is again speaking to the religious elites, those who exercise authority over who is accepted and who is excluded in the worshipping community. In many places in the Gospels, we see Jesus challenging their assumptions and criteria, and rejecting their self-righteous attitude. Here, He uses the image of a wedding banquet to illustrate His point. I think there are two aspects of this parable that are important for us to consider. Jesus presents the Kingdom of God as a wedding banquet where the invited guests (i.e., God’s chosen people, Israel), either ignore the invitation and refuse to participate, or even kill the king’s messengers (i.e., the prophets). Applying this to our own situation, we who have been chosen and united to Christ through Baptism are the invited guests. But how often do we allow other concerns to take on a higher priority than participating in the Lord’s banquet? If attendance at Mass is any indication (at least, prior to the pandemic), then the vast majority of Catholics in this country are prioritizing other things. But even for those of us who do practice our faith and consider ourselves “good Catholics,” we can allow many other things to come ahead of our focus on the Kingdom. Do we appreciate what we are being invited to? When the king sees the response from those he had invited, he extends the invitation to everyone who is willing to come. Now, inclusion no longer depends on being among the chosen people, but is for whoever says “yes” to the invitation. However, those who come to the banquet still must arrive appropriately dressed. That is, in order to participate in and enjoy the feast, the guests need to be properly prepared. How we live now in response to the call of our Baptism will determine whether we are properly clothed for the heavenly banquet. How we give witness to the Kingdom will also impact how prepared others will be to enter the feast. What we have been invited to, called and chosen for, is nothing less than the boundless, eternal happiness for which we were made. May we heed the invitation and make our response our top priority, so that when the time comes, we will be ready for the feast and able to bring many people with us.

In Christ & St. Philip, Fr. Jeff

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a This passage describes the new Jerusalem as a heavenly banquet on the mountain with the Lord God wiping away all tears. Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 In simple, direct words, Paul thanks the Philippians for alleviating his hardships. He stresses, though, that he is as accustomed to poverty as to abundance and finds all his strength in Christ. Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14 Once more speaking to the chief priests and the elders, Jesus relates the parable of the wedding banquet. A King, preparing a wedding banquet for his son, summons all the invited guests. When, after several invitations, no guests arrive, the King commands his servants to “go out into the byroads and invite anyone you come upon.” Again, Jesus warns the elders, “the invited are many, the elect are few.”

"Catholics are called to defend human life wherever it is threatened and stand up for human dignity wherever it is violated. The enormous number of human lives destroyed by abortion is one factor that elevates its importance. The

most recent available data indicates over 2,000 children per day die from abortion in the United States. Since abortion was legalized in 1973, over 61 million children have been killed—and untold numbers of women and men suffer in the aftermath. People of good will must boldly stand up against this intrinsic evil, especially when it is occurring on a massive scale, implemented in law and funded, in some instances, by the government. As believers and citizens inspired by the Gospel and guided by the shepherds of our Church, we must do what we can to end violence in the womb, to ensure that unborn children are fully recognized and protected by our laws, and to support mothers and fathers in embracing life." -Priorities at the Polls, USCCB SIGN UP: votervoice.net/usccb/register Take Action and Contact your elected representatives about important pro-life issues.

RESUMING CHOIR REHEARSALS While safety restrictions have prevented a typical start to our choral year, all are invited as we begin to meet again as a choir. These gatherings will include some singing & rehearsing, as we are able to do safely, but also will allow time for musical and liturgical formation as well as community building. It may seem funny, but... There has never been a better time to join the choir! New members in particular will find these initial meetings welcoming and approachable. At this time when we are all thirsting for community, come make the community of the choir yours! Our first gathering is Thursday, October 15 at 7:30pm at St. Ann's church. Masks are required, and we will space out in the church as at Mass. Future locations will be determined based on attendance, however we plan to meet each Thursday evening at 7:30pm. To RSVP or for questions, contact our Director of Liturgy and Music, Anthony R. Nardino:
