ISH POST
MUSIC TO OUR EARS
By the Music Committee
On any Sunday, you'll see parishioners in the Nave before the 10:30 am service, listening
raptly while Interim Organist and Choirmaster Dr. Michael Crowe and Assistant Choral
Director Dr. Brittnee Seimon lead the choir of Incarnation through a beautifully efficient
rehearsal for the service that will soon begin. Incarnation is a "singing church" and it
is nothing short of inspiring that our choir comes together for about an hour before
worship and leads us all in singing the service music and hymns appointed for the day.
Choir section leaders are paid singers who commute from Brevard and join with other
dedicated singers drawn from the parish. Although Sunday morning rehearsals are
brief, advance preparations have been made. The organist and singers have studied and
practiced during the week. Soloists have prepared their anthems.
At 10:30, a spirit of joy in making music can be felt, enriching the worship experience
for all who are gathered. But have you noticed a glitch from time to time with the organ?
Visiting Organist Mary Norton , and Interim Organist Michael Crowe both
identified parts of the organ that are in poor condition, have stopped working
altogether, or are unpredictable and sometimes fail right in the middle of a hymn.
Some repairs have been made, but after research and consultation, the time has come
to replace the organ. The Rector and Vestry have approved the purchase of a new
organ, made possible by a generous donation from communicants. We anticipate that
this beautiful instrument will arrive during the summer, so
stay tuned!
We are blessed to have Michael Crowe as Interim Organist.
Meanwhile, the search for our
next Organist and Choirmaster
has begun. A detailed job listing was posted in publications
followed by church organists,
providing information about the pos1tion, Incarnation,
and Highlands. Almost immediately we received several applications, providing the opportunity to review CV's, links to applicants' recordings, and references. The Rector
will select our next Organist and Choirmaster, with advice from the music committee and consent of the Vestry. The music committee participants in addition to Bentley are
Al Brady, Ruth Claiborne, Michael Crowe,Jean Head, Heath Massey, and Ruthie Oliver.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT: The Church of the Incarnation exists to proclaim the Gospel of our
LordJesus Christ through worship, love and service. As individuals and
as a congregation, we dedicate ourselves to this purpose.
ANIMAL SHELTER BUILT FOR REACH
About 20 church members traveled to Franklin on
Saturday, May 4, for the dedication of the animal shelter
built by the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation for
REACH, the family crisis center and home for abused
women and their families.
After a prayer from Fr. Bentley, REACH assistant Jennifer Turner-Lynn and Outreach chair Bill Lee told the group
about the history of the project. Planning began in
February, 20 I 7, with design, material estimates, permitting
and site preparation preceding the laying of the slab in
June, 2018. The animal shelter was based on an Amish
kennel design, with four dog runs inside and out, separated
by chain-link fencing and divided by Guillotine doors. A cat room was added for smaller animals.
The Rev. Bentley Manning, Outreach Chair Bill Lee, REACH Di.rector Andrea Anderson, and Assistant Director Jennifer Turner-Lynn with a plaque thanking the Church of the Incarnation for building the animal shelter.
Church members and REACH staff pose in.front of the animal shelter at a "ribbon-cutting" celebration May 4.
Incarnation members involved in the building were Peter Ray, Tom Claiborne, Don Duggan, Mike Dupuis, Gary
Moore, Bill Walker, Frank Shimsky, Billy O'Dell and Bill
Lee. An anonymous pariishioner hired three carpenters to
help raise the trusses.
REACH commissioned a plaque honoring the church for
its commitment and will hang it in the shelter.
After the dedication ceremonies, the group was treated to lunch provided by members of Bethel Baptist Church of Franklin.

Education for ministry is a four-year program of theological education offered by the School
of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). Every baptized person is called to
ministry. EfM offers a way to discover how to respond to the call of Christian service and prepares people to identify and carry out their ministries. Participants meet weekly at
Incarnation to study the Bible, church history, and theology while learning to engage in
theological reflection. Lay people face a confusing and often subtle task of interpreting
the richness of the church's faith in a confusing world. EfM stands on a foundation of
tradition, recognizes cultural and contextual nuances of our world, and helps participants
articulate their values and beliefs. The EfM program is preparation for the ministry to
which we all are called. It is that for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist: '½nd now,
Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord."
We will begin the fourth program at Incarnation in September, 2019. For more
information, call Linda Arnold 828.526.585 7 [email protected] or David Moore

SHARING GOD'S GRACE
Our most recent community dinner was held Tuesday,
May 7, 2019. Over 130 of our Highlands neighbors
enjoyed our dinner, and our volunteers enjoyed
working together to bring it to fruition. We were
delighted to have Incarnation members as guests as
well as worker bees!

MINISTRY MOMENTS "The Outreach Committee" by Patricia Hastings
"Truf:] I sqy to you, as you did it to one qf the least qf these my brothers, you did it to me." Matthew 2 5:40
My awareness of struggling families began when I was in college taking a child development class. Head Start was
just being organized and I jumped at the opportunity to work with the program part time. That led to my teaching
kindergarten in a small rural community where I saw struggle on multiple levels. Ultimately, I became a school guidance
counselor and my professional goal was to help
guide students and their parents through the
education system. These experiences set the stage
for my outreach involvement in retirement.
I've enjoyed many volunteer roles at Incarnation
but serving on the Outreach Committee has been
the most satisfying. The committee seeks to fulfill
Jesus' admonitions to care for the the needy. In the
midst of great beauty and plenty in Highlands and
Macon County, there are many who are poorly
nourished and lacking in adequate clothing and
housing. More than half the students at Highlands
School qualify for free or reduced lunch because of
the family's low income.
Through grants and the hands-on labor of our membership, Incarnation currently supports 14 outreach projects.
Ultimately, all of our work is supportive of the children in our community although helping struggling individuals and
families to thrive is our overall mission.
I love being part of a church community that can respond quickly to needs brought to our attention. At the beginning
of this budget year, Incarnation set aside $10,000 in reserve to give the flexibility to meet emergency needs. Thinking of
the future, our church is currently exploring ways to help provide much needed child care in the Highlands community.
FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF OUR CURRENT OUTREACH PROJECTS:
Community Care Clinic
Dental Clinic
Counseling, Psychotherapy Center
Highlands Community Child
Development Center
REACH: domestic abuse shelter
and support for families in crisis
International Friendship Center
Life Challenge of Western NC:

MINISTRY MOMENTS "The Garden Committee" by Dollie Swanson
The Garden Committee is a group of dedicated, long-term gardeners who love to
share their own gardening experiences while caring for "God's Garden" at
Incarnation. We water, weed, prune, fertilize, plant and even remove or divide
plants that have outgrown their space. What's so special about this committee is
that God is our Chairman. At the beginning of each Tuesday meeting we decide together what we want to accomplish. We have great help from Miguel and his sons
when the job is too big for us, and they also maintain the sidewalks, creek and grass.
Monetary support for the work in the garden comes from the congregation's pledges
- many thanks!
It is a privilege for us to share the garden with passersby and parishioners who
continue to be in awe of the variety and beauty of the plantings. It truly feeds our
souls. New strong backed members are always welcome to join us.
SOCIAL HOUR GUILD
The simple cup of coffee after the 10:30 Sunday Service has
evolved into a Social Hour with linen tablecloths, flowers,
a children's table, and delectable treats served on silver
trays. After several months of trying to "do it all", the vestry
has voted to open the social hour for participation to all
parishioners, making it a community event.
the kitchen/Jones Hall area by 10: 15 on Sunday morning.
Disposable containers are welcome!
The goal is to kick this off on June 16th (Father's Day).
You are invited to join Suanne Duggan, Jean Head,
Florence Holmes, Stephanie Reeves, and Adele Scielzo in
this new endeavor. Sign-up sheets for participation will be
at the Parish Picnic,Jones Hall, and at the office window. A guild is forming to shepherd this throughout the year. The
idea is that parishioners would sign up to bring one "dish"
such as a loaf of finger sandwiches, fruit and cheese, cookies,
small biscuits, etc., once every four to five weeks. Seasonal
members are encouraged to participate when in town.
Picking a date and what you are bringing can easily be
handled by email. It is asked that the contributions be in
We look forward to having you join us!
