PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

In a welcome surprise, this year’s Royal

Mail Christmas stamps feature scenes in-

spired by the Nativity. Mary and the Baby

Jesus appear on the 1st Class stamp and

Joseph being visited by the Angel on the

2nd Class stamp. The seven stamps are inspired by verses from the Gospels of

Matthew and Luke and recognise that 2011 is the 400th anniversary of the

King James Bible. The priciest is appropriately enough for those bringing

“gold, frankincense and myrrh”. If you need a reminder – last posting dates

are 1st Class Tuesday 20th December and 2nd Class Saturday 17th December.

If you would like something different to put on your

envelopes this year, the Bible Society, have made some

free stickers. They aim to help people to “Encourage their

friends to unwrap the true story of Christmas”. You can

order free stickers to use as a seal on the back of your

Christmas cards and point your friends to the real meaning

of Christmas. Myself I think it’s a great idea. It’s a

simple way to express our faith and brighten up some envelopes. You can order

them on 01793 418330 or at www.christmasunwrapped.org.uk.

Closer to home come along and invite your friends to some of our Christmas

events. Changes this year are a new Crib Service (come in fancy dress if you

like) on Christmas Eve at St John’s which replaces the later service which is

now shared with St Michaels at 11pm. Highlights at St Michael’s are

Christingle and the Candlelit Carol Service and Christmas Eve services; while at

St John’s there are three other events – Christingle, Carols and Candles, and

the Carol Service. If you have young children then there are also parties at

Tiddlywinks Praise and Tots.

Of course we know that we worship the same Lord that was worshipped that

first Christmas. The early Christians tried to make sense, not only of the

birth of the Son of God, but also his ministry, death and resurrection. Here

the Apostle Paul – one of the prime, first century proponents of the new faith

– sums up the significance of Christmas and beyond…The attitude you should

have is the one that Christ Jesus had: He always had the nature of God, but he

did not think that by force he should try to remain equal with God.

Instead of this, of his own free will he gave up all he had, and took the nature

of a servant. He became like a human being and appeared in human likeness.

He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death – his

death on the cross. For this reason God raised him to the highest place

above and gave him the name that is greater than any other name. And so, in

honour of the name of Jesus all beings in heaven, on earth, and in the world

below will fall on their knees and all will openly proclaim that Jesus Christ is

Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I hope to see you at one of the events this Christmas. And if you’ve never

been before to St Michael & All Angels’ or to St John’s or it’s a long time

since you’ve been. You will find a warm welcome this Christmas.

Europe Based Orientation

Back in March, aware that there are far more opportunities for people to

serve the Lord in Africa than people applying to work with AIM, our home

staff came together for a day of prayer and fasting. Our purpose was

specifically to ‘ask the Lord of the harvest to send out (more) workers into

his harvest field’. God is answering those prayers. At our up-coming Europe

Based Orientation Seminar, from 27-30 November, there will be nine people

preparing to head out to Africa in the coming months. Please pray for Joshua

Bosman, Sara Chambers, Anne Halley and Margaret Mulgrew (Synergy work-

ers) and Gemma, Jessica Goldschmidt, Elisabeth Schenk, Pete and Libby Hal-

estrap (long-termers) that this will be an encouraging time of fellowship,

teaching and training in readiness for future service. Pray, too, for them as

they gather together partners who will pray and give to support them in their

work. It is the gifts and prayers of people like you which are vital if we are

to see more workers sent into the Lord’s harvest field.

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are

few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his

harvest field.” (Matthew 9:37-38)

Thank you again for your support and partnership with us in the Lord’s work

in Africa.

Dear Friends, Dear Friends, Dear Friends, Dear Friends, Hello and greetings once again to all of you.

You may recall from our last update we were

moving house? Well we have and our moving

day was Saturday 29th October. All our family rallied around and well, just moved us! We were

more or less kept out of the way while the muscle

moved in! We are so blessed with our family.

The house is in immaculate condition and

doesn’t need any decorating or maintenance at all. The garden is so low maintenance even down to an artificial lawn!

A big thank you for all the house moving cards

and apologies for not letting many of you know

our new address and telephone number. We are rectifying this now (see above).

Many of you know that our pension appeal was

upheld by the judge at our tribunal hearing. This was a tremendous feeling that God had come through for us. Our God is truly amazing, let’s

give Him all the glory! Thank you for your prayers and a special thank you to Stephen, our advisor,

who has really worked hard on our behalf.

We expected a hearing of at least an hour to go

over all the evidence we had. In the event it was all over in 20 minutes. It was rather nerve racking and we, including Stephen, had to go and

have a coffee to settle ourselves down. At the end of the hearing the judge said that she would make her decision that afternoon and we would receive a letter with her decision in about three days time.

As we sat drinking our coffee we all agreed that

she, the judge, showed no indication, by body

language or what she said, of what she was thinking. She didn’t refer to the thick file in front

of her but she had obviously gone through our

appeal evidence because of the pertinent questions she asked.

However, and this is a big ‘however’. Just over a week ago Stephen, as our advisor, received a letter from the Pension Service saying that their

Decision Maker is considering whether to appeal,

as she can on grounds of law and that as a first step she is requesting a statement of reasons for

the decision from the Tribunal Service.

This of course came as quite a shock as we

thought the whole issue was settled and we could move on with this new chapter in our lives.

We would appreciate your prayers for a little

longer please.

mission shaped ministry

Wolverhampton (Codsall)

From Saturday 28th January 2012

Graham Cray, Pall Singh, Ashley Cooper, Julie Jones, George Fisher, Godfrey Stone,

Andrew Roberts and Jeff Reynolds

Fresh Expressions mission shaped ministry was launched in 2007. Since then, it has been presented in 56 centres across the UK with more than 2,000 people taking part in the one-

year, part-time learning journey. Individuals or teams, leaders and members, clergy and lay

people learn side by side in the sessions to make msm a major contributor to lay and ordained ministry training.

The course’s 24-units are presented over:

three Saturdays;

a residential weekend;

six weekday evenings.

Course content includes the mission of God, vision and values, gospel and culture, evangel-

ism, discipleship, leadership and team roles, spirituality, worship and the sacraments, how

to keep going when things get tough, and what is Church?

Andrew Roberts, director of training for Fresh Expressions, says, ‘It is a joy to see

mission shaped ministry equipping people from a great range of all Christian backgrounds to

share more effectively in God’s mission. In many cases, those involved have seen calls and

visions clarified. Some have gone on to launch fresh expressions of church whilst others

have been enabled to sustain them in their work. Many have helped existing churches to

become more mission-shaped.’

John Coles, Leader of New Wine says, ‘If 97% of the nation is not in church every week,

it’s either because they are not interested in spiritual things, or because ‘church’ is not

sufficiently interesting or interested in them. If the nation is to be changed, the Church

has to change its way of communicating the good news about Jesus. msm has already helped many to reconnect with God's heart for the nation, and to find new ways of helping the

Church to find new ways of reaching the 97%. I thoroughly recommend it. But be warned,

it might change your life as well as your view of church.’

Revd Neil Adams, Stafford Circuit says ‘It was a great place to listen and learn and share

- a safe space that gave confidence to work in new ways in the future - a great resource.’

The Green Thing This article was in a village magazine,

In a queue at the supermarket, the cashier told an older woman

that she should bring her own bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the

environment. The woman apologised and explained “We didn’t have the Green

Thing back in my day”. The cashier responded “That’s our problem today –

Your generation did not care enough to save our environment” And she was

right- our generation didn’t have the Green Thing.

Back then we returned milk bottles and beer bottles, so the same bottles

could be used over and over again. So they really were recycled. We walked

up stairs, because we didn’t have a lift in every shop and office building. We

walked to the shops and didn’t climb into a huge machine every time we had to

go a short distance. Back then, we washed the babies’ nappies because didn’t

have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gob-

bling machine burning up electricity. Wind and solar power really did dry the

clothes. Children got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers and sisters,

not always brand-new clothing.

We had one TV or radio in the house, not a TV in every room; and the TV had

a small screen the size of a pocket handkerchief (remember them?), not a

screen the size of a football pitch. In the kitchen, we mixed and stirred by

hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything. When we

packed a fragile item to send by post, we used up old newspaper, not plastic

bubble wrap. Back then we didn’t start an engine and burn petrol just to cut

the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power; we exercised by

working so we didn’t need to go to a gym to run on treadmills that operate on

electricity.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a

plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled fountain pens

with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a ra-

zor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got

blunt. Back then people took the train or a bus and children rode their bikes

to school or walked instead of turning their parents into a 24-hour taxi ser-

vice. We had one electric socket in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to

power a dozen appliances, and we didn’t need a computerised gadget to re-

ceive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find

the nearest takeaway. But isn’t it sad that the current generation laments

how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the Green Thing

then?

its gates for Lille-Walk

Lilleshall National Sports and Conferencing Centre launched a weekly health

walk around its historic site, which is open to members of the local commu-

nity. The walk is part of the Walkabout Wrekin project and is being or-

ganised in partnership with Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust. The

vast 300 acre site will enable the walk to offer a series of five different

routes which will in essence represent each of the rings of the Olympic em-

blem. Each route will be pushchair and wheelchair accessible, and there is

ample free parking for visitors in the Centre’s main car park.

“Walking is a great way of not only improving your health and fitness but it

can offer people real opportunities to socialise with other like-minded

individuals from the local area,” commented Martin Barrett, Sports Develop-

ment Manager for Lilleshall National Sports and Conferencing Centre. “The

site is steeped in such history that it should provide an intriguing

experience to walkers and the fact that it is such a big site will mean that

we can keep the session fresh with new walks and routes.” Jenny Stretton,

Health Promotion Specialist for Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust

said “We are delighted to include these new walks onto the existing Walk-

about Wrekin walks programme. The stunning location and local heritage

provides additional interest and we would like to encourage people to join in

and experience the many health gains that this can provide.” For further

information please contact on Martin Barrett 01952 225915 or email Martin

on [email protected] or Jenny Stretton on 01952 217474.

Lille-Walk is a free activity led by a trained Walk

Leader. The first walk took place on Thursday 10th No-

vember at 12:30pm and is continuing weekly thereafter

on the same day and time. It is anticipated that each

walk will last for no longer than an hour. Interested

walkers are encouraged to just turn up and report to

the main reception in the Old Hall for registration with

the Walk Leader.

Police Forces across the Diocese are now using 101 as the

new, non-emergency national telephone number. The

current 0345 and 0845 numbers will continue to operate

in the same way. The 101 system will work by redirecting

people’s calls, wherever they are in the country, to their

nearest police force and is intended to be easier for

people to remember. The number should be used to

report a crime or anti-social behaviour which does not

need an emergency response. In an emergency, members

of the public should continue to use 999.

At the Inn.....

and now, to get you all in the festive mood, here's a little Christmas Quiz:
