Dear Residents, Families, Team Members and Friends of Culpepper Garden! It is only a few short months until Spring! For those of you who are baseball fans the pitchers and catchers report for spring training in three weeks, of course that is in Florida and Arizona. This means that we in the Mid-Atlantic have a few more months of potential winter storms and cold snaps. Please closely monitor weather conditions and take every care when out in this weather. Ice is often very hard to see, especially in the dark, and can form quickly in cold temperatures so step carefully. Keep an eye out and report any issues to the front desk, please.
The Hot Corner issues for this month in our community: Please return grocery carts back to the main level. They are to be used by everyone, so please, do not keep them in your unit as this makes it difficult for others who are expecting them to be there. We are receiving reports and seeing stories in the news about various phone scams targeting the elderly. It is unfortunate but please be alert when answering your phone for these scams. Be sus-picious for ANY requests made by phone, as it is not normal! Many common scams are:
¨ Social Security Fraud. The caller states that you have been accused of Social Security Fraud and will be prosecuted. The SSA does not call people with this type of issue! This is a scam.
¨ Family Member in Jail. The caller states that your family member has been arrested and that they are the police/sheriff. You are asked for bail to get them out of jail. Law enforcement never demands bail money by phone. This is a scam.
¨ Internal Revenue Service. The caller says that you have been audited and are being sued by the IRS for unpaid taxes. The IRS never contacts people by phone demanding payment. It’s a scam. Recent moves due to the renovation: The weekly Movie Nights and daily Exercise Class have been moved to the 3rd floor lobby. The Clinic has been moved to the office formerly occupied by the Financial Services (Your Money Manager) which is now located in the Administration wing.
As the renovation moves along, we will finally see the return of our common areas that have been completed!! The first will be the public restrooms which will be reopened in February. This will be the start of many of these spaces being turned over for use.
In closing, with all the disruption and confusion to our community while we are under renovation it is important to look after each other. It is dark, the weather is bad and there is construction everywhere. It is amazing to me how well our community is handling this challenging time. It is testimony to the strength and positive nature of our community! Think Spring!! See you around the building. Warm Regards, Paul.
From the Director of Property Operations

RECERTIFICATION UPDATE
5
We appreciate your continuing efforts to prepare for and actively participate in the annual Recertification process, required for residents of Culpepper Garden.
Many of you, during Recertification interviews, have asked me to describe the full scope and complexity of the Recertification process.
The process can best be described as four competing trains, running on the same track.
The first train is our advance preparation for your Recertification interview. We must carefully review your previous year’s Recertification documents; prepare new verification letters; and confirm the contact information for each of your verification sources. Each Recertification can entail anywhere from 5 to 15 separate verification letters, as well as 11 HUD required forms.
The second train is the actual interview meeting we conduct together, at which time we review your Financial Questionnaire; sign prepared verification letters; create any new letters required, and review, complete, and sign the 11 HUD required forms.
The third train is verification of income, assets, and medical expenses. We employ the verification letters you sign during your interview. We do make every effort to release signed verification letters immediately following your interview. Some Recertification sources require 15 – 20 business days or longer to respond to our requests.
The fourth train is quality control and data entry. We carefully review each returned verification letter to ensure it exactly matches the information you provided during your interview, and the information is entered into our computer records completely and correctly.
Please keep in mind, all four trains are running simultaneously in the Recertification office all year long.
It is important that you keep your Recertification appointments, as scheduled, so the process continues to run smoothly and quickly for everyone.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - GLORIA LIBERATORE Gloria’s parents met and married in Naples, Italy, and immigrated to the United States by way of Ellis Island, NY. Her father was a tailor and worked at Brooks Brothers until retirement and her mother cared for their home and children. Gloria was born and raised in Staten Island, NY, the youngest of seven children, with three older sisters and three older brothers. All six siblings have passed away and she misses them very much. After graduating from high school, she worked as a typist at General Electric International on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. She worked there for five years, when the company moved to Connecticut. Since she didn’t want to move, she next worked at
EBASCO Engineering for five years. She was the last to leave the family home and lived with her parents for 42 years until they passed away in 1973. At that time, she moved to the Bronx where she had an apartment on a lower floor from one of her sisters. While she was looking for a job in the Bronx, she happened to meet a woman on a park bench who lived in the same apartment building. The woman showed her an ad in the New York Times about a job at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), across the street from their apartment. She recommended that Gloria take the DMV application test; Gloria did so, passed, and started her new job the following Monday. She worked at the DMV at its Information Desk and Road Test sections for the next 20 years. It was the only DMV in the Bronx so Gloria was used to dealing with hundreds of people every day. After 20 years, Gloria retired from the DMV and moved to Washington, DC, where her brother worked at the World Bank. He helped her move to Friendship Terrace in the DC Tenleytown area. Through a work placement program, she worked as a library assistant at nearby Woodrow Wilson High School for ten years. She next worked on weekends at the Invertebrate Exhibit at the National Zoo where the star attraction was a giant Pacific octopus, the largest octo-pus species in the world, named Pandora. (The daily octopus feeding at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. is one of the most popular animal demonstrations at the Zoo.) Gloria admitted visitors to the exhibit, counting them with a clicker, and answered visitors’ questions. On weekends, visitors numbered about 2,000/day.
Gloria’s niece learned about Culpepper Garden and arranged for her to apply. Gloria was fortunate to be accepted soon after applying, in 2011. Her apartment is scheduled to be renovated in March 2019 and she looks forward to having new appliances, cabinets, a walk-in shower, and other wonderful features. She is fortunate to have an aide, Ms. Ellison from Home Care Partners, who helps her on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Gloria enjoys attending the Coffee Club, and she was a reader for preschool children from Barrett Elementary School over the past year. A friend sometimes gives her a ride to St. Thomas More Church. She goes to Walter Reed Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where she learns Tai Chi, participates in strength training, plays Sudoku and bingo, and relaxes and en-joys herself. Gloria is a lovely lady who is very much at home at Culpepper Garden.
