.Aug. 31st, as to "atthew Clark being the son of Benoni, ^apt.

V/illiam, Lieut. William, have "been rudely upset.

Strong history gave the children of Benoni as:

Sarah, Zerviah, Eleazer, Hannah, Miriam, Benoni, Matthew, Ephraim, Sibyl, John, Rhoda, Thomas.

I find the will of Benoni Clark, dated Feb.22 1762, probated Feb. 23 1769, mentions: —

Wife, Hannah (Hannah Root); ’’heirs of my son Benoni, (Benoni m. Ruth Carpenter, end he died previous to the death of his father, leaving three sons); sons Eleazer and John- Thomas the youngest son died early - so this takes care of the wife and sons. Ahen he mentions, Sarah Lamphear, ^annah Cillins, Miriam Allen, Martha Buckingham, Experience Towner, Sybbel Waterman, and Rhoda Clark ±-this takes care of all the daughters - so that ti looks like the twins Matthew and Ephraim, were really Martha and Experience. Zerviah died young. I have no record of another "ulthew Clark who would have been young enough to have married Sarah Clark in 1754 and to have had a son Lyman Clark born 1755.

Matthew Clark, the son of Pavid, who married Irene Strong, was born 1761. He had a son Matthew born 1800 - but I do not know whom the litter married. Am wond ring if

Am wondering if you can give me any light on this subject.

Am making fine progress on the Lebanon Clarks - a good portion of whom went to liew York State. Am much in hopes 1 cac visit East- hampton next summer when I will show you the progress made so far.

Rufus Brown lived on land at the foot of Mt. Ton, opposite what is now Clark Street. He was thrown from his horse and died from the effects of thef all. His old Bible with family record, entered by himself, is still (1912) in existence. Ea was a grandson of Benjamin Janes, whose wife was scalped in the Pascommuck Massacre. His wife, Jerusha (Alexander) Brown, wa^ granddaughter of Mrs. Abigail(Pomeroy) Searle, wife of John Searle who was killed, while his wife, Abigail (Pomeroy) Searle, was tomahawked and left for dead the same day. May 13 1804 (O.S.) Rufus Brown was a soldier in the Seven Years1 War, the fourth French and Indian War. He was in Capt. Elisha Pomeroy*s co.,Col. Yftn. Williams’ regt.,in 1758. Earlier he was in Capt. John Burk’s co., but nol/n that part of the company included in the capitulation of Port Wm. Henry. In 1778 he served 3/4 month in the Northampton Militia,in Capt. Joseph Clapp’s co. (See Judd MSS.)

Elisha Brown married Catherine Searle, S.A.R., who was carried captive to Canada, after the Indian Massacre at Pascommuck, when his father, John Searle, Jr., was killed and his mother, Mrs. Abigail Pomeroy Searle, was left for dead, although she, too, recovered. Later she married Nathaniel Alexander. Their son, Baniel Alexander, half-brother of Elisha Searle, since they had the same mother, was the father of Jerusha Alexander who married Rufus Brown, youngest brother of Lt. Silas Brown, both of whom were soldiers in the Revol¬ ution and brothers of Mrs. Uriel Clark, Mrs. Hannah(Brov/n) Clark.

Catherine Searle was sister of Rebecca Searle, Mrs. Zebadiah Alvord.

Jonathan Clapp was 2d Major in Col. Seth Pomeroy’s (2nd Hampshire Co.) Reg’t., Commissioned Feb. 8 1776. Resigned his commission Apr. 5 1778. Accented in Council Apr. 14 1778.

(Mass. Soldiers and Sailors, v. 3, p.487.)

Major Jonathan Clapp had two sons who served in the War of the Revolution, Capt. Joseph Clapp and Quartermaster Benjamin Clapp, and his daughter. Submit Clapp married Lt. Asahel Clark, S.A.R., and had a son named Fliakim Clark, also a S.A.R., so she was the daughter, sister, wife and mother of soldiers of the American Revolution.

Also given in Capt. William Ward’s Co., commanded by Col. Israel Chapin, of 2nd Hampshire Co. regt. Commissioned July 6 1778

Rev. Rolls 28, p.43. Lt. Asahel Clark was in the Battle of Lake George, Sept. 8 1755;

also at the taking of Fort Ticonderoga, 1758, and was in active service all through the War.

He was taken prisoner in Shays’ Rebellion.

Eleazar Clark married Sarah Clark of Northampton, in 1786.

Submit Clark m. Ebenezer Janes, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Parsons) Janes,on May 13 1790.

Asahel Clark, Jr. m. Susa Bartlett about 1794. He was drownded at the dam in the Conn. River near So. Hadley Palls, Apr. 26 1798, and his grave is in the cemetery on River- dale St.,West Springfield (north side). His wife married 2d, Levi Clapp of Easthampton and died Kay 16 1808 " 43. Her grave is in Main Street Cem. by the side of her husband, Levi Clapp. Asahel,Jr. and Susa had a son named Asahel, who never married and is buried near hid mother on the Aaron and Levi Clapp lot.

The stone for Lucas Clark was among the old stones near the tomb, where Lt. Asahel Clark’s grave-stone wad until removed by Submit Clark Chapter D.A.R. to the Major Jonathan Clapp lot, in the front of the cemetery. Lucas Clark’s stone removed to the Clapp lot,0ntT 1916.

Bohan Clark m. Tamasin White of South Hadley. He was with his brother Asahel, rafting logs down the Conn. R. when the latter was drowned.

WILL OF ITHAMAR4 CLARK

In the name of God Amen. I Ithamar Clark of Northampton in the County of Hampshire, Yeoman, do on this nineteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundred and ninety-ei^it make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.

To my son JOHN CITRIC I devise and give a lot of Land containing about an acre lying in that part of the common field called Ranhan near the mouth of the Rrain so called in said Northampton, be the same more or less, to have and to hold the saipe to him and his heirs forever. This with what I have given him being his full portion.

To my son ITHAMAR CLARK of Pownal, I devise and give a piece of Plow Land in the Common Field in said Northampton lying on the ^ast side of the I ill River and extends southerly to Middle Leadow Hill, containing about two acres, more or less, to have and to hold the same to him and his heirs forever. I also give to my said son, Ithamar Clark, one cow.

To my son OLIVER CLARK I give and devise all the Land and Real Estate which I 07/n in Easthempton in said county to have and hold the same to him and his heirs. I also give to my said son Oliver a set of drag teeth, one hand saw, two augers, a drawing knife and an Iron Square,to be at his own disposal.

To my son Pharez, or as he is commonly called PEREZ CLARK, I devise and bequeath all my other lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, Goods and Chattels, Rights and Credits, and all my other Estate both real and personal etc.

Susan Lillian Clark gives date of death of Susannah Clark as Mar. 14 1813. In the History of Deaths at Northampton it states that Susannah Clark died there Mar. 14 1803.

WAS Nancy, Susannah or Sarah Clark married - their ages at death were respectively 23, 20 and 33 ? Susan Lillian also states:"One record states Sarah died Mar. 23 1820." Poes she refer to Sarah, the dau. of Iyman Clark above, or Sarah the widow of Matthew Clark? In the History of Deaths at Northampton, I do not find any record on Mar. 23 1820 of the death of a Sarah Clark, so I should judge that Apr. 27 1827 as given by Susan was correct.

Capt. Philip Clark was a farmer at Easthampton, Mass; a soldier in the American Revolution; was one of the first school teachers in Easthampton. Although politically opposed to the majority of the voters, he was as prominent in town affaira as anyone. He was quite frequently chosen to preside on the deliberations of the town, and for a number of years filled the position of selectman with credit. . He had quite a numerous posterity. 1 as one of the original members of the First Church at Easthampton and was its first clerk. Where he lived was Northampton until 1785, then Eastahmpton. First Church here was formed in Nov. 1765.He lived at Pascommuck. Children;- by first wife - three -

Phineas Clark was enlisted into the Continental Army from Capt. Oliver Lyman’s regt. according to Mass. Soldiers and Sailors, v.3» p.566. ’’Private, Capt Oliver lyraan’s co.,Col. Pike’s regt." Various other services given to him (or to another of the sane name). He served three years in uhe army. See Lyman’s Hist, of Sasthampton. in 1787 he was taken prisoner by the Shay’s insurrectionists but was soon released.

Their dau. Almena Smith was 2nd wife of Paniel Franklin Lyman, whose son. Rev. Payson Williston Lyman, was author of the History of Eastharapton, printed in 1866.

Eleazar Hannum was born in Northampton, and later settled in what is now West Street, Easthampton, which was then Southampton. He died in 1818 and was buried in the old cemetery opposite Williston Seminary and bofiy removed probably in 1865 to present Main Street cemetery, where his gravestone stands on the lot where stands the town tomb, where so majiy of the bodies of old Revolutionary Soldiers were ree interred. His wife’s gravestone is standing near his. Six generations of his descendants have lived on part of his original homestead. \7m. H. ^annum, 2th from Sergt. Eleazar Hannum , and family being the present owners and occupants.

His service during the Revolution is given in V.7, p.233 of lass. Soldiers and Sailors:- "Sergeant, Capt. Elijah Clapp’s co.,and Col. John Dickinson’s regt., engaged August 17 1777, discharged Aug. 22, 1777. Service 5 days. Company marched towards Bennington. Roll dated at Southampton."

Among the early settlers of Pascommuck were Samuel Janes and Sarah Hinsdale, his wife, and Benjamin Janes with Hannah Edwards, his wife. There men were sons of Elder Win. Janesiji and aarly settler of Horthampton and Northfield. Samuel and Sarah(Hinsdale) Janes were killed in the Pascommuck Massacre in 1704 and their son Samuel5 was left for dead. He recovered, and was the first person to return and begin the re-settlement of Pascommuck.

Four sons of Samuel^ and Abigail (Ferry) Janes were soldiers

in the American Revolution and all their graves are marked with

SAR markers. All these were probably born in the old house,

standing before the Pascommuck Massacre in which Samuel, then a

lad of ten years, lived with his parents until the Indians destroyed

the settlement. To this same house it is probable that he brought

his young bride in 1717, the year of their marriage. This house

being accidentally set on fire, was burned, and anothet large house,

built in 1768, was standing until torn down in 1905. From this

old house, then but recently built, Samuel Janes, who as a boy aws

left for dead by the Indians in May 1704, was carried out to his

burial in 1776, just as the War of the Revolution was, as it were,

just beginning. This Samuel Janes, a lad in 1704, was buried in

East Street cemetery and Submit Clark Chapter, P.A.R. in 1912,

placed at his grave a marker commemorating his eventful life. He

it was who was the first person to begin the re-settlement of

Pascommuck after the Massacre.
