THIS PAST MAY, I HAD THE AMAZING opportunity to speak at the Exercise is Medicine conference in Tel Aviv, Israel. Professor Steven Blair presented science and data supporting the non-debatable facts that exercise prolongs and improves quality of life. Professor Kathryn Schmitz presented science and data about exercise and cancer. I was able

to show what we are doing at the Club with chronically injured and chronically ill populations. The facts are astounding. Consider the prescription below.

If we had a pill that conferred the proven health benefits of exercise, physicians would prescribe it to every If we had a pill that conferred the proven health benefits of exercise, physicians would prescribe it to every

The youngster in this group is 65-yeaThe youngster in this group is 65-year-old Myron Hester, a retired law officer who is an active deacon at his church. Then there’s Rich Laughton, 71, who has his own business in childcare and safety. Also at age 71 is Darlene Odonis, an active registered nurse. Both she and Myron are cancer survivors. The senior of this group, Chuck Welby, 78, is retired, but a very active lane swimme78, is retired, but a very active lane swimmer. Both Chuck and Rich also play in the Club’s weekly, Saturday racquetball ladder.

Their daily goal is to reduce stress by having fun exercising and training some of the new kids in the 50 and 60-year-old group, or visitors from other states and clubs. They’re all in the low end of their BMI range. These “cut-throat” athletes enjoy long volleys and mixed doubles. The guys give no quarter to Ms. Darlene who serves at about 100 mph and has a mean backhand. about 100 mph and has a mean backhand.

They continue to draw about a dozen members who all share stories and experiences about Ted on the court at The Club, at Dodger baseball games or some foreign country he was going to visit.
