I am I and you are youThe Kotzker Rebbe, as he is known, was a person who stressed truth. Truth in dealing with others, for sure, but even more so, truth in dealing with one’s self.
A Jew who traveled to Kotzk was certain of one thing; he would come back a different person. The Chassidim of Kotzk would cut through a person’s personality and character traits like a butcher chops up meat. Trimming away from a person’s character those traits which were unpleasant, and leaving only the good. A Jew would leave Kotzk, with a different view of himself. Not everyone found it pleasant, but sometimes it is necessary to look at one’s self realistically in order to improve.
The Kotzker didn’t leave us with any writing. He wanted no limelight, nor fortune. His thoughts are available to us only because his Chassidim wrote them down.
Yet his thoughts are important and relevant for all of us. One of the most famous statements of the Kotzker was:
If I am I and you are you, then I am I and you are you; but if I am you and you are I, then I am not I and you are not you.
On the surface this may not be too meaningful, but if we look into it we may see something very interesting.
If I am I and you are you, means that if I act according to my own personal being and do that which is for me to do, then I am I. And if you act according to your own personal being, doing that
which is for you to do, then you are you.
It still sounds simple. However if I am you, meaning that if I see how you live your life and I come to envy you, because of your personal successes, fortune or other accomplishments, and because of this I try to emulate you and do what you do in the manner that you do what it is that you do; then I am not I. And if you in turn, see me and if in your eyes I am successful. (so you might think) If you come to envy or emulate me, to try to act like me, then you are not you.
Why is this such an important element in being a true person? The reason relates back to how we were all created. Each of us was given qualities in which we excel. Some people can think better than others, some can build better than others. Each person’s mind is different than his friend’s. Some have a good spatial memory, some remember numbers well. Some remember faces, some remember places. Some have artistic talents and others have organizational abilities. Some prefer to be alone and others need a group. Each character, and there are many, many types, were given to us by our creator in order for us to fulfill our unique mission in this world.
That’s the message from the Kotzker. We must be ourselves. We must know ourselves, the good points and the lacking. Only then will we merit inner peace and harmony. Only then will we be at peace with ourselves and our friend

Even though you may be enjoying the fall weather yourself, your skin probably isn’t. Why? Because humidity levels drop during the season and typically leave your skin more vulnerable to dryness and flaking. Dry skin isn’t only aesthetically frustrating, it’s unhealthy as well. Fortunately, a couple of changes to your skin care routine and your diet can make a world of difference. By taking the right measures, your skin can stay well-moisturized and healthy in the colder seasons. Below are some tips to help you accomplish just that. Drink More Liquids to Hydrate Your Skin
Colder air holds less moisture, leaving your skin dry. So, one of the most fundamentally important things that you can do is to drink more water. Simply put, drinking water hydrates your skin. It also nourishes it and improves its overall appearance. Also, consider limiting caffeinated drinks and alcohol, as they Use Moisturizing Creams to Lock in Moisture
Use a moisturizer right after a shower. This helps to lock in moisture that you’ve gathered when showering. Also, don’t rub your skin dry to towel off. Instead, blot it to help retain moisture. Definitely avoid moisturizers that contain alcohol — they dry out your skin. Instead, choose products that contain hyaluronic acid. This actually helps to attract water to your skin.
Instead of using lotions, go for creams — they’re usually more effective at keeping moisture in. Other good ingredients to look out for in products include jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil, and avocado oil.
Omega-3 Fats Also Help with Dry Skin
Dry skin can definitely be a product of cold weather, but it may also indicate an omega-3 deficiency. In fact, studies show that
people with eczema, a condition associated with dry, flaky skin, had improvements after taking 5.4 grams of DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) daily for two months. Add this to the growing list of omega-3 fat benefits as another reason to be sure to get enough every day.GLA Eases Inflammation that Leads to Dry Skin
GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid found in borage oil, also helps to trap-in skin moisture. In a clinical study, elderly people reported less dryness after just 2 months of supplementing with 360 mg of GLA daily. Scientists think GLA works by easing inflammation which could cause dry skin, but the exact mechanism is still unclear. Virgin Coconut Oil is Great for Your Skin
Virgin coconut oil is a seriously great moisturizer. In fact, one study showed that it was just as effective as mineral oil. One of the extra benefits of coconut oil is that it contains monolaurin, which protects skin from disease-causing bacteria. This is extremely helpful, as dry cracked skin is far more susceptible to infection.
The Bottom LineYour skin doesn’t have to suffer this fall or
winter. In fact, it can look great if you make a few subtle changes to your daily routine.

A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed.
The pipistrelle bat weighs less than two pennies and is only as long as a person’s little finger. Yet it can eat 3,000 insects in one night.
The Syracuse University Lava Project has begun a recent study in which they create lava and study its properties. Just for some background knowledge, magma is molten rock that flows underneath the Earth’s crust and only becomes lava after it reaches the surface. What these scientists are doing is taking chunks of basaltic rock, which are usually found on the seafloor, and melting them down with temperatures as high as 1,200 degrees Celsius! This produces lava that then flows for a couple meters.
The most common areas for basaltic rock are Hawaii, Italy, and Iceland. Because naturally occurring lava is relatively rare and difficult to study, scientists hope to gain a deeper insight into its behavior to possibly create new security measures for volcanic eruptions and to be able to better predict how they will occur. To engage students, the University started several interesting projects.
One of which was having kids attempt to roast marshmallows and hotdogs over the lava. Because the temperature is so high, they strangely discovered that it’s almost perfect for cooking!
They say...
Did you know...?
Over Your CoffeeIt’s possible to make Lava. It’s apparently great for
roasting marshmallows!
