Atop a northern bank of the Schuylkill Riversits Vaux Hill, a neoclassical style palatialmanor surrounded by rolling grounds. The house was built in 1843 for William Wetherill by thePhiladelphia architect John Haviland, noted for hisneoclassical style and for designing the original FranklinInstitute and renovating Independence Hall. The historichome was completed on a site known as Fatland, and thefirst house on the site was built in 1776 by James Vaux, awealthy Quaker from Philadelphia. During theRevolutionary War, George Washington stayed at thehome as it was a strategic location for the ContinentalArmy camped at nearby Valley Forge. Later, John JamesAudubon frequented Vaux Hill as a visitor, and it wasthere he met his future wife Lucy Bakewell with whom heexplored the home’s gardens and natural surroundings.

The property was purchased in 1991 by Robert andBarbara Safford, who renovated and extended the homeand began to furnish it with lavish European antiques.Over the next twenty years, both Robert and Barbara, inspired by their travels to Europe and the castles andstately homes they visited, amassed a collection ofsuperb porcelains, clocks, furniture and decorative arts.Their vision of a palatial interior came to be fully realized, and the quality of the pieces presented in the sale is atestament to their dedication and passion.

130After Allessandro Algardi (Italian, c.1598-1654) a pair of monumental bronze sculpturesjupiter victorious over the titans, cast by charles crozatier circa 1850Gilt and patinated bronze, depicting Jupiter wielding a thunderbolt in his right hand, and sat uponan eagle poised on a globe, resting on rockwork supported by three kneeling titans, inscribed“Crozatier” to the body, on square molded base raised on acanthus scroll feet.H: 43 1/2 in.literture:Watson (F.J.B.) “The Wrightsman Collection, vol. 2” Metropolitan Museum of Arts, 1966 pp.364-367note:The famous model from which the present examples are derived was originally conceived as oneof four fire chenets representing the four elements with personifications of Jupiter, Juno, Neptuneand Cybele commissioned from Alessandro Algardi for Philip IV of Spain around 1650. Only two ofthem, Jupiter and Juno, were completed by the artist before he died in 1654, the other two werefinished by his pupils. When they arrived in Spain they were not used as chenets but given by theKing to the Duque du Terra Nueva where they were adapted as decorations in the fountain at thejardin de la Isla at Aranjuez. The present bronzes are probably cast from the ‘Chenet de l’Algarde’ in the Louvre (MR 3262),which was a copy cast in 1682 for the Versailles palace, and which was later in the Chateau deTuilleries and Chateau de St Cloud. They were cast by the renowned French bronzier CharlesCrozatier (1795-1855), who pioneered a new casting process for large statues. He was apprenticedto the celebrated silversmith Jean Baptiste-Claude Odiot (1763-1850), was a pupil of both PierreCartellier (1757-1831) and Francois Joseph Bosio (1769-1845), and was commissioned by LouisXVIII to replace major French scultpures lost in the revolution. The eponymous Musée Crozatier, inaugurated in 1868, was built in his honor.$50,000-80,000
