The English in India

Since the Portuguese and Dutch dominate in the East Indies, the English focus their efforts in India.

The East India Company is established. This company was set up to trade and make money.

However, it also had it’s own army (with forts) and controlled large areas of land.

Page 4: The colonies of asia

ControlThe native Indian armies were easily defeated because of internal fighting and the English had better weapons and training

The company hires local Indians to be soldiers, but there were not treated well, and their education of their families was not taken seriously

Indian TradeIndian products (like cloth) had to be sold only back to England-- with a huge tax.

Products brought from England did not have an added tax, so they are cheaper!

This knocks the Indian weavers out of business, leads to widespread unhappiness and revolt!

The Sepoy Revolt of 1857

Causes: Indians were worried about forced conversion to Christianity

Indians were not paid well or promoted regularly

Indians forced to work in faraway countries

Rifle cartridges were greased with pig and cow fat (which was offensive to both Muslims and Hindus)

100 years of oppressive English rule

The Sepoy Revolt of 1857

A “sepoy” is an Indian solier serving a european power

The sepoys unite against the English by declaring loyalty to an Indian Emporer and printing new money

Many thousands die during this year of turmoil

This revolt served to unite the various peoples of India against the English

Transitions…Because of the revolt, the East India Company is dissolved and the English crown officially takes control over all India.

The English then start building railroads, courts, factories, schools, universities.

Through education, the Indians learn about democracy

Christian missionaries arrive and attempt to convert the local peoples.
