COFFEE AND COMPANYYou are invited to join us for coffee and biscuits and have a chat at19 The Link on the first Thursday of each month between 10.00 am and11.30 am. Everybody welcome - please come and bring a friend.
Pause for thought – It sometimes seems that life is such a rush. We have hardlyfinished with Christmas and then it’s the sales, into a New Year and back to schoolfor the children. Have you also noticed that while there are still Christmas goodieson the shelves in the shops they are already selling mini Easter Eggs. This is still atime of year when people are lonely. We remember them around Christmas andNew Year and then as the year moves on we get involved in other pursuits. So whynot take time to visit the older, disabled or lonely people who live nearby. Your visitcould just make all the difference to them and shows God’s love in action in our lives. That is surely what our faith is all about.
Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas Services at Bentley Church. Itwas lovely to see so many people joining us at the Christingle service, who came tosing the old familiar carols and hear the old familiar story. And many thanks for allthose who came to Mulled Wine and Carols this year, especially the children whosang for us, making it a special occasion. And very special thanks to Ray, Ken andall their helpers who made the church look so spectacular again this year. If youmissed it this year then make a note to come in 2017, it’s well worth the visit.
SONG AND DANCE.
We are looking for anyone who would like to join a "pop up" choiror a dance group to rehearse, perform
and have social events togetherTo enhance the special services we plan to run
in your church this year.We don't wish to make a song and dance about it
but great fun will be had by all who join in.Please contact Peter Day 01473 310518, if interested.

B e n t l e y CEVC P r i m a r y S c h o o l News
It may be cold outside, but the curriculum at Bentley CEVC Primary is reallyheating up! Despite the chilly weather at present, we are looking forwardto lots of activities planned for the forthcoming spring. Our Chair of Governors, Dennis Kell, will be launching the Big Birdwatchevent in both schools in the next few weeks, kicking off with a specialassembly to introduce the children to the event and explaining how we canhelp this big, national project. Miss Cross at Copdock and Miss Wilding atBentley will be leading a veritable host of Forest Schools activities throughthe remainder of the school year also, meaning that the pupils will beengaged in a much greater depth of learning in the outdoor environment. We are extraordinarily lucky to have such beautiful, diverse, and ideal forexploration, grounds around our schools, meaning that the Forest Schoolsscheme of learning can be accessed by all the children in all year groups. In March, we will be giving a lot of thought and attention to Science Week. All the classes across the federation will be taking on significant scienceprojects. In addition to this, each class has started a new class topic for thehalf term; Wolves are doing a topic called “Super Scientists” and Addersare doing “Marvellous Mayans”. If you have any expertise or artefacts thatyou think might be useful in any of these topics, and you are willing to lendthem to us, please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you.Diversity within the curriculum and extra curricula activities are beingfurther enhanced by our variety of clubs running this term. Across the twoschools now, we offer 2 sports clubs, a singing club, a cooking club, a filmclub and drum and guitar lessons. In addition to this, Eco Council at bothschools are looking at how to improve the grounds and are hoping to setup a gardening club.We are all really looking forward to the Easter Experience organised by StMary’s Church, Bentley, again this year. Last year the children visited the“stations” and learned about the true Easter story. We are very pleased tobe invited again this year. The Christian ethos is an important element ofthe school and we have asked families to make some new crosses for usein our assemblies and celebrations. We hope to include some photos, inthe next edition, of the art work the children produce. Finally, we are looking for a midday supervisor at Bentley for either one ortwo days a week. If you would be interested in this post, please call theoffice on 01473 310253 for more information.

FRIENDS OF CAPEL LIBRARYBy the time you read this we shall have had our Annual General Meetingon the 28th January, and re-elected the Trustees for 2017. As I pointed outin December the Library Service is coming under increasing financialpressure caused by cuts in funding. We, as Friends, are committed tomaintaining and improving the service that is provided here at Capel. One new innovation is the Community Cinema, and you can support ourwork and see a good film by coming along. Our first film will be BridgetJones Baby. Watch out too for events being planned for March and April. If you are not a member of the Friends yet don’t delay, as there are benefitson events, and it only costs £1 a year… ridiculous really…less than theprice of cup of coffee.Even better join the 100 Club for £12 a year and have the chance ofwinning one of three monthly money prizes.Chris Yule

CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE UPDATE JANUARY 2017
Managing Demand over the Winter PeriodDemand on the NHS as a whole is at its highest during the winter months. Thisputs pressure on all our staff and so it is even more important at this time of theyear that we deal with patient problems as efficiently as possible. Please helpus by following the guidelines below:
· Tell the receptionist the nature of your problem. They can ensure you seethe right clinician (GP, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse) and you maynot need to come into the practice if it can be dealt with over thetelephone. If you need to see a GP, they will be aware of your problembefore you see them which helps them prepare for you consultation. Ofcourse, if your problem is personal and you would rather not disclose it,then that is fine.
· If you need a home visit, please let us know as soon as possible. Thedoctor will phone you before leaving the practice to ensure they need tosee you and they can help with the problem. Home visits can take up toan hour in total so if you can attend the practice please do so.
· Order repeat medication well in advance and nominate a pharmacy. Many prescriptions can be sent electronically to a pharmacy of yourchoice. However, it can take up to 3 days for the practice to process yourprescription as the doctor will need check that it is safe to issue it.
· The clinicians at the practice are not equipped to deal with every problem. If you have a serious acute problem you should attend A&E or dial 999for emergency assistance as contacting the surgery may delay treatmentbeing provided to you. Serious problems include broken bones, severeallergic reactions, breathing difficulties, severe chest pain, severeburns, seizures, very ill children, severe bleeding, poisoning, foreign bodyin your eye/ear. This list is not exhaustive and the practice may adviseyou to attend A&E if it is in your best interest to do so.
Training DaysJust a reminder that in 2017 the practice will be closed from 1.00 pm on thefollowing dates for staff training:9th February (Thurs), 8th March (Wed), 19th April (Wed)On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescrip-tions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recordedmessage will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannotwait until the next day.Pete Keeble, Practice Manager

BENTLEY COMRADES
At our December meeting we had a Christmas comedy filmshow that included an episode of the Morecambe and Wiseshow, several amusing Internet download clips and aChristmas edition of ‘Allo, ‘Allo entitled A Bun In The Oven.During the interval mince pies and sausage rolls were
generously supplied by Ray Savage to make the meeting a good start to thefestive season. In the week before Christmas we all met at the Case is Altered for Christmaslunch, there was a party of 24 attending, consisting of members, partners andfriends. A toast to absent friends was drunk. A raffle of donated prizes was heldand the sum of £55 raised. A cheque for this amount was presented to MikeWoodward, Treasurer of the Capel St Mary War Memorial fund. Our first meeting in 2017 took place on 4th January when Craig Barker gavean illustrated talk entitled Bombs and Baubles. This covered Christmasactivites during times of conflict starting with the Christmas cease fire in 1914when German and British troops fraternised and the Princess Mary gift boxeswere presented to all allied personnel. His talk also included activies at the timeof Pearl Harbour in 1941 making World War II a global conflict and also thefamous response of ‘Nuts’ when the Germans suggested that the US Armyshould surrender during the Siege of Bastoigne in 1944.Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interestedin the British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of eachmonth in the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments andeach make a contribution towards the hire of the hall. SAVE TIME AND MONEY WHEN BUYING YOUR HEATING OIL
If you are one of over 46,000 households in Suffolk which is off the mains gas network, youcould be saving money on your oil heating bill thanks to a local social enterprise.Community Action Suffolk (CAS) runs a community buying scheme which has purchased over2.1 million litres of oil in the last year. In this time, households saved an average of £60, highervolume users such as community groups have saved £100 and rural businesses have saved£321.Despite recent record falls in oil prices, the scheme’s members have still made a collectivesaving of over £70,000 in the past year, as heating oil is purchased in bulk.Oil deliveries are then planned to provide an environmental benefit, with one oil tanker makinga single trip to several members, rather than numerous single trips to the same area. Not onlyis the tanker’s fuel consumption is reduced, but so is the heavy traffic through rural villages.Natalie Lomas, Resources Officer at CAS, said: “Our members simply like the low prices thatwe get for them. Since the scheme started, our prices have been consistently lower than theaverage prices our members would have paid independently. “Members also appreciate theease of the scheme, as they do not have the hassle of phoning around suppliers for quotes.“We take orders from our members across Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and place bulkorders twice a month. We can also organise individual orders for members who miss adeadline, or find that they are running short.”Members are not required to place orders online in order to benefit from savings, as is oftenthe way with similar schemes. This is one way in which the scheme prides itself with customerservice. One regular customer recently commented: “Once again I would like to take thisopportunity to thank you and your colleagues for organising and providing this service, whichcontinues to offer significant savings on heating oil purchases as well as proving to be veryefficient in its operation and delivery, thank you.”As well as heating oil, the scheme also supplies members with Fuel Additive, Red Diesel, GasOil and LPG. Membership starts from just £20 per year and members have the option ofplacing orders via the website, by email, post or telephone. To become a member or for more information visit www.communitybuying.org.uk or call 01473345355 for a membership pack to be sent to you.

Five matches have been played since the last report. Although weplayed very well at Tuddenham and Barking, heavy defeats were notunexpected as Tuddenham play on an extremely difficult surface andBarking are the runaway leaders of the division. However in the three home fixtures we enjoyed a narrow 6 - 4 victoryagainst Sproughton, followed by equally tight games against Belstead andClaydon, and felt rather unlucky to lose 4 - 6 and 2 - 8 respectively. Our next four games are versus Copdock (H), Blakenham (A),Tuddenham (H), and Stutton (H).David Howe (Captain)

THE SCHOOLING OF BENTLEY'S YOUNG HAS LEAPT FORWARDSINCE 1907
One hundred and ten years ago secondary schools were required to make atleast a quarter of their places free and so available to elementary school pupils. Not until 1913, however, did two Bentley School pupils win scholarships to theMunicipal Secondary Schools at Tower Ramparts in Ipswich. In 2017, bycontrast, all Bentley Primary School's eleven-year-olds can start freesecondary education at a high school catering for the full range of ability. In 1907 Bentley School pupils, having to leave school no later than age 14,received their entire education in the School. Today, very differently, pupilsmay choose to leave their secondary school no earlier than age 16.In 1907 Bentley School's curriculum for its 86 four-to-13-year-olds was verylargely deskbound and limited to the three Rs, Arithmetic, Reading and Writingand, in a C of E school, Scripture. Today's many fewer four-to-eleven-year-oldsface not only the centrally - imposed National Curriculum which, intended to liftstandards, is more demanding but also a wide range of other subjects includingCooking, Swimming and French, several of which require each pupil's activeparticipation. With the curriculum demanding more of pupils, teachers have become betterqualified. Mary Moxon, Bentley School's Headteacher in 1907, wascertificated, having served a five-year apprenticeship as a pupil-teacher. Butshe didn't attend a training college. In 2017 teachers, quite differently, havenormally gained "A" levels and completed a training course, often one leadingto a degree.Today teachers and parents, all wanting the children to make rapid progress, work closely together. At evening workshops teachers explain to parents thecurriculum confronting their children. Parents, in turn, raise money to enableteachers to enliven the curriculum. In 1907, by contrast, teacher-parent contactwas minimal and concerned almost entirely a pupil's absence especially asattendance determined the School's income. Parents' seeing their children'swork in school or receiving reports on it lay in the future. In 1907 an HMI (His Majesty's Inspector) visited the School three times withoutleaving a record of how he rated the pupils' progress. Today, by contrast, newspapers publish the results in SATs (Standard Assessment Tests), takenby pupils nationwide, each Local Authority's schools being placed in leaguetables. In 2015 Bentley School's eleven-year-olds finished eighth among over200 Suffolk schools and OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education)inspected the School and graded it "good".John Tombs - Village Historian
