Dahlias can be cut back now as frost will have blackened top growth - dig up tubers and store if your garden freezes and stays frozen. If in a milder situation, tubers can stay in the ground protected with mulch or straw on top, once cut back. If clumps have become too big, remove tubers from the perimeter and plant or give away. Digging up and shifting young Shrubs around - like Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Magnolias can be done now - anything you think has been struggling in the spot it has been planted. Trees like Akeake, Hebes; Olearia Traversiorum (Chatham island Akeake) and Hoheria (lace bark) can be nice trees for a number of years, but will then die back and eventually look half dead. Pittosporums will grow nicely for many years if trimmed, but if left to grow into a tree will soon become unattractive. Many natives respond well to being taken off at ground level - most will regrow into a nice Shrub again. Overgrown Hoherias (lace bark) need to be completely removed.

Wow ! Monday was so cold... numb fingers and toes, but then Tuesday was like a warm Spring day - so hard to adjust to for not only people but plants as well - frozen one day and basking the next. However, frosts are here to stay for a while now with the shortest day upon us, Plants can be acclimatized to the cold by gradual exposure to outside and overnight temperatures. Many plants may be frost tender when young, but will be quite tolerant when mature. Meyer Lemon bushes are a good example. Keep frost cloth on when young, but a couple of years on they are frost tolerant. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if the overnight low is predicted to be 4 degrees Celsius or below with little wind, tender growth will need a cover. Cover plants with frost cloth, newspaper or any light material that will drape over, although woven fabrics are better insulators than plastics or paper. The covers can be laid right over plants, supported above them which is even better. Plants under evergreen trees are protected from frost, so this might be an option for where to place potted tender plants. Water before the frost –it has been proved that a moist soil can hold four times more heat than a dry soil. It will also conduct heat to the soil surface faster than a dry soil, aiding in frost prevention. These days, sprinklers are sometimes used on commercial plantings to keep the plants “warm” on a frosty night, the science being that as water freezes, it releases heat, go figure ?Most perennial plants will recover in the Spring from frost damage - Even if they have gone black or mushy with frost, don't remove the affected growth - just leave to protect the new growth, which will appear when the ground warms again. In favor of frost, it is very effective in reducing populations of over-wintering pests - it also helps break down clay soil if clods are left exposed over Winter. Come Spring, it will fork over easily prior to planting.

Fruit; Prune Pip fruit trees if overgrown and have become too tall for picking, and clear the centre. If branches are crossing, remove the youngest. Apples fruit on the same spurs for many years, so if a tree had fruited at the right height last season, remove all tall new growth. Cheers Linda

Veg. The shortest day is here already, which should mean we are over the hump of Winter and heading to warmer days down the other side - BUT as we all know, there is a lot of Winter yet to come here in the south. The shortest day means Garlic planting and plenty more veg here on the coast, if you provide a warmer microclimate to aid germination. A cold frame can be used for starting seeds, and cloches or frost cloth for protecting newly planted seedlings in frosty areas - or plant veg in pots or boxes and position them in a warm sheltered spot, to make the most of our North Otago Winter sun.

OAMARU + PHARMACYIt’s your Pharmacy

Let's talk about ThreadwormsThreadworms are small, thin, white worms between 2mm and 13mm long, that look like cotton threads and live in your bowel. Strict hygiene measures can help clear up a threadworm infection and reduce the likelihood of reinfection. Threadworms are spread from human to human. They are not carried by animals so don't come from pets. Threadworms are spread easily within families, creches and daycare centres, schools, and camps. If one person in your family has threadworms, others probably do too. Threadworms leave your gut at night and lay eggs on the skin around your anus (bottom). The eggs can get onto your hands or under your fingernails through scratching the itchy area or because of poor handwashing after using the toilet. You can pass them on to an uninfected person, for example through food handling. Threadworm eggs can also get onto carpets, bed linen, towels, flannels and into household dust and in this way, they are passed from person to person. It may be between 2 and 6 weeks after contact with a source of infection before the life cycle is complete and eggs are laid in the newly infected person. Signs of Threadworm include an itchy bottom, especially at night. Restlessness, bed-wetting and irritability, e.g. grinding teeth. Threadworms visible outside of a bowel motion, or around the anus. Decreased appetite. The most obvious way an infection is diagnosed is if the threadworms can be seen in the stool (poo) or on toilet paper. Treatment in most cases, a threadworm infection can be treated with strict hygiene measures. This also reduces the likelihood of reinfection. Medication to treat a threadworm infection can be bought over the counter from your local pharmacy. It is important to limit your chances of getting threadworms and of spreading them to others by following these hygiene measures. Wash your hands carefully and often, avoid scratching around your anus, keep your fingernails short, wash your clothes and bedding regularly, bathe and change your underwear every day, avoid sharing a bathtub or sharing face cloths, vacuum your carpets often. You can buy worm medication from your pharmacy. All household members, including adults and those without symptoms, should be treated with worm medicine at the same time. It is recommended you take 2 doses of mebendazole – one dose initially and another dose 2 weeks later. At Oamaru Pharmacy we have a wide range of treatments for all the family. Come in and see us, the team is always ready to help with friendly and knowledgeable advice.

Interior colours are easily updated and you can have a bit of fun with them. You may wish to create a warm, casual, informal home which makes you feel comfortable and at ease or your personality may be more suited to a vibrant, colourful and playful style of décor. It is best to decide this at the beginning to avoid costly mistakes. It’s always wise to start from the ground up as flooring will be the largest block of colour in your interior. You then build on your “layers” for example wallpaper, drapes, paint colours, cabinetry and accessories according to your design brief. Good planning will ultimately help you reach your end goal.

Waitaki Interiors - Great designGreat design is achieved by working through a process and making choices in the right order. Leaping into your project without a plan can make it more difficult to achieve your desired design outcome. At the very start you need to identify the look you want to achieve and build it from there, taking into account existing materials and design styles (such as your existing exterior or big ticket items such as carpet) which you may not be in a position to change. You need to consider your environment and the properties surrounding you. Your neighbours colour scheme can impact upon yours and while you don’t want to match them you might consider using a complementary colour scheme or alternatively a contrasting palette to make yours stand out. Exterior colour schemes need to last longer than internal ones due to the expense of painting or re-cladding so when building a new home it’s best to choose an exterior colour scheme which will look great for many years. The latest on trend colour might not always be a good choice in the long term if it is likely to date quickly.

Preheat oven to 210°C fan bake. Line an oven tray with baking paper.

1/2 cup Parmesan - grated.

Double Cheese and Chive Scones

Mix the dry ingredients together and grate the butter into it. Using a butter knife, stir in the chives and cheddar, keeping back ¼ cup. Pour in the yoghurt, milk and Worcestershire sauce, mixing with the knife until it comes together. Turn out onto a well-floured bench and deftly pat it to bring it all together into one scraggy mass – it will be a little sticky, don't worry. Pinch off dough into 10 balls and shape into rounds on the tray. Or pat the dough into a rectangle and cut into 10 squares. Sprinkle the Parmesan and remaining cheddar over each scone. Bake for 15-17 minutes or until golden or even dark brown – don't be afraid to cook these scones until the cheese caramelises, as a crunchy outer layer will still give rise to a deliciously fluffy centre.

1 3/4 cups plain flour, 3 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 tbsp mustard powder, 1 tsp sea salt, 50 g butter, chilled, 1/2 cup chives, chopped (or use rocket), 3/4 cup aged cheddar - grated, 1/2 cup plain yoghurt, 1/2 cup milk,1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
