A new exhibit at Gracie Mansion features more than 60 works of art, spanning an era when women were fi rst allowed to vote until the present day.
The exhibit “She Persists: A Century of Women Artists in New York, 1919-2019” includes works by 44 female artists, including Kara Walker, Faith Ringgold, Alice Neel and even First Lady Chirlane McCray’s mom, Katharine Clarissa Eileen McCray.
The exhibit is organized around four central themes: contending with history; body as battleground; picturing people; and expanding abstraction.

NYS se une a la demanda nacional contra Trump
New York State Attorney General Letitia James fi led a
lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California challenging President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in a bid to build a wall at the Mexican border, and his attempt to divert funding appropriated by Congress for other purposes.
The complaint alleges that Trump’s emergency declaration and diversion of funds is unconstitutional and otherwise unlawful.
Joining in fi ling the lawsuit are the Attorneys General of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Virginia.
The states seek to block the Trump administration’s emergency declaration, unauthorized construction of the border wall
and any illegal diversion of Congressionally-appropriated funds.
The suit points out that unlawful southern border entries are at their lowest point in twenty-years, immigrants are less likely than native-born citizens to commit crimes and illegal drugs are more likely to come through offi cial ports of entry.

one does not exist is immoral and illegal,” said James in a statement. “Diverting necessary funds from real emergencies, crime-fi ghting activities, and military construction projects usurps Congressional power and will hurt Americans across the country. families and parents, we can create lasting change in our school communities.
That’s why I want to let parents know about an important opportunity: the application period for Educational Council elections is open.
This is an amazing opportunity to get involved—Community and Citywide Educational Councils are critical for lifting up the voices of our school communities.
Parents and families can apply for the following Education Councils: Community Education Councils (CECs) for the district where your child’s school is located; the Citywide Council on High Schools; the Citywide Council on Special Education; the Citywide Council on English Language Learners; and the Citywide Council for District 75.
These Education Councils hold town halls for their communities, and they advise me, our superintendents, and our high-level DOE offi cials on key policy issues. Community Education Councils also hold hearings on the School Capital Plan and approve school zoning lines.
Our Education Councils get results. In the past year, parent leaders have asked for more air conditioning and technology in our schools, as well as a school system that’s more streamlined and responsive to their questions. And we’ve delivered—speeding up our Air Conditioning for All initiative, investing in school technology, and creating Executive Superintendent positions to empower our parents and give them clear lines of communication.
Every parent can run for an Education Council. It doesn’t matter what language you speak or if you just moved to this country—I want to see your name on the ballot.
And as important as it is to run, it’s also important to vote!
If you’re a PTA offi cer, it is your responsibility to vote on behalf of your school. This is your chance to elect the next Education Council members and help shape the direction of our schools. Take advantage of the opportunities to meet the candidates over the next few months and be sure to cast a ballot.

The Supreme Court announced it will decide whether or not
the 2020 Census can include a citizenship question on Fri., Feb. 15th.
Time is of the essence is this case because the Census Bureau must decide what questions will be printed on the forms before they are distributed. The pressure is on to resolve the issue by June so that paper questionnaires can be printed as scheduled.
While the Census will be conducted online for the first time, about 20 percent of U.S. households still will receive a printed questionnaire in the mail.

In January, Judge Jesse Furman of the Southern District of New York agreed with several states (including New York) and civil rights groups that the decision to add a citizenship question to the U.S. Census was “arbitrary and capricious.” The Trump administration appealed the ruling two days later.
But then Solicitor General of the United States Noel Francisco, a Trump appointee, asked the Supreme Court just days after to rule on the question, bypassing the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.
As Solicitor General, Francisco, a former clerk for Antonin Scalia, represents the Trump administration and the U.S. government before the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court accepted, making it the first time in 15 years that it has bypassed the appeal court.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James issued a statement Friday. “Adding a question about citizenship to the Census would incite widespread fear in immigrant communities and greatly impair the accuracy of population counts,” she wrote. “Any underrepresentation of the real number of people living in states and localities could reduce representation in Congress and funding for New York and other states and localities across the country. “
James added that it would have far-reaching negative effects and is also antithetical to the purpose of the Census.
Julie Menin, New York City’s Census Director and Executive Assistant Corporation Counsel, said, “We remain confident that the facts and law are on our side, and that U.S. District Judge Furman’s opinion striking down the question as unlawful will be upheld. The Trump administration’s veiled effort to silence our immigrant communities will not be tolerated.”
“The District Court recognized these facts in ruling in favor of our challenge and we look
forward to seeing the Trump Administration in court once again,” she said.
In a statement from the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), which is one of the parties to the lawsuit, Executive Director Steven Choi said they are confident the Supreme Court will uphold the decision to block the citizenship question.

New York City’s economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2018, as unemployment continued to fall, according to a new report from City Comptroller Scott Stringer.
Stringer’s Quarterly Economic Update showed that the New York’s gross city product grew 3.9 percent, the highest rate of 2018, during Q4 2018, while the unemployment rate fell from 4.1 percent in Q3 2018 to 4.0 percent in Q4 2018.
The city added 34,000 private sector jobs in the last quarter, the report said. More than half of the new private-sector jobs created were in low-wage industries. For the full year of 2018, total private-sector jobs were up by 74,200 or 1.9 percent – making this the ninth consecutive year of job creation and the longest sequence of job gains on record.
“In this past year, New York City’s economy has continued its solid performance, and New Yorkers have enjoyed a decade of solid economic growth,” said Stringer. “But too few of our neighbors are sharing the fruits of this expansion. With looming risks to continued growth, insuffi cient gains in good-paying jobs, and a continued aff ordable housing
crunch, we need to set the foundations for fair, equitable growth that lifts all New Yorkers up.”
Other fi ndings in Stringer’s Q4 2018 report:• The number of employed city residents
rose by 6,700 in Q4 2018 to a record high of almost 4.1 million.
• The greatest private-sector job gains were in health care and social assistance sectors, at 11,000 new jobs.
• The average hourly earnings of all private NYC employees rose 3.4 percent on a year-over-year basis to $36.69 in Q4 2018.
• Total venture capital investment in the New York metro area rose to a record high of $13.33 billion in 2018, 8.7 percent higher than in 2017, despite a decline in the fourth quarter.
• New commercial leasing activity in Manhattan increased 45.1 percent to over 10.2 million square feet in the fourth quarter, the biggest fourth quarter increase on record.
• Despite the increase in new commercial leasing, Manhattan’s overall commercial vacancy rate increased to 9.2 percent in Q4 2018 due largely to an increase in supply.To view the full report, visit comptroller.

Many law-abiding immigrants living in the United States
are just a legal action away from deportation.
New York State now off ers additional legal services to protect these residents.
New York State’s Liberty Defense Project (LDP) and the Vera Institute of Justice already provide representation to detained immigrants facing deportation proceedings. Services under Vera’s New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) have expanded.
For the next two years, NYIFUP will provide representation to immigrants who have been detained under prior orders of removal. Unrepresented immigrants facing deportation at the Batavia, Ulster, Downstate and Bedford Hills immigration courts are eligible for services.
New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said, “The Vera Institute of Justice’s work has helped hundreds of New Yorkers fi ght back against the Trump Administration’s callous immigration policies. Governor Cuomo’s Liberty Defense Project is proud to continue to partner with Vera and expand services so that we can provide eff ective legal representation to even more immigrant families.”

June with her Congressional primary win over 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley, officially took the oath of office in January in Washington, D.C. She returned to her home borough on Saturday for a ceremonial event with her constituents and local leaders.
Hundreds of supporters packed into the Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and the Arts, chanting Ocasio-Cortez’s initials, “A.O.C.”
At age 29, Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress.
The crowd witnessed her swearing-in by the Honorable Judge Jenny Rivera, a member of the New York State Court of Appeals, and heard speeches by other Bronx elected officials including Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., and State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, who won her own stunning victory by defeating longtime Senator Jeff Klein in the Democratic primary.
“Both of us beat very powerful men,” said Biaggi. “Both of us were told it was not possible.”
Díaz called Ocasio-Cortez a “powerful Latina” in the vein of Sonia Sotomayor and Antonia Pantoja.
“Thank you for putting the Bronx on the map,” said Díaz. “Thank you for being gracious in your victory.”
He also praised the Congresswoman’s desire to improve the environment.
“We were made fun of when all we wanted to do was clean up the Bronx River,” he said. “For us, that was environmental justice. Now, to have a bold Bronx Latina telling the world, ‘We can clean up our earth.’”
Also in attendance was Congressman
Adriano Espaillat; State Senator Mike Gianaris; City Council Speaker Corey Johnson; and City Councilmember Ritchie Torres.
Samelys López of the Bronx Progressives also lauded grassroots efforts.
“The results of our community organizing efforts will be how future generations remember us,” said López. “People power can move mountains!”

Advocates rally against student
arrests, school metal detectors
High school students and City Councilmembers gathered
on Tuesday to call on the city to eliminate the use of arrests, summons, and juvenile reports in schools for violations and misdemeanors.
Using the slogan “Counselors, Not Cops” the advocates also demanded that city funding for school security measures such as metal detectors instead be reallocated to increase the number of guidance counselors and social workers at schools.

“We cover our eyes to exemplify how this administration has looked the other way and continued to support racially discriminatory discipline policies,” said one student. “Let youth voices no longer be ignored and let us be given the support we deserve.”
“Our vision for safe and supportive schools has guidance counselors and social workers, not more metal detectors,” said another student named Jovany. “We don’t feel any safer with more metal detectors. It’s just another way to criminalize black and brown students.”
This year, the Department of Education capital budget doubled the funding for school security infrastructure, including metal detectors and remotely accessible surveillance equipment, to $200 million.
“In a DOE budget of over $32 billion dollars, there is no excuse for not funding more counselors and social workers,” said Councilmember Mark Treyger.

The statistics are shocking.
The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day — whether from sodas and candies, cookies or other baked goods, or seemingly healthier foods like yogurt and granola. At this rate, that’s 57 pounds of added sugar a year.
The problem with consuming added sugar? It isn’t just that it off ers no nutrients and plenty of calories (for example, one 20-ounce sports drink contains 122 calories of added sugar). Consuming too much sugar can also lead to serious health problems including obesity, diabetes, certain cancers, and even heart disease.
Health Matters spoke with Dr. Rekha B. Kumar, an attending endocrinologist at NewYork-Presbyterian and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, about how sugar consumption aff ects your health — and how much is too much.
What does the latest research show

Consuming excess sugar leads to a condition called insulin resistance, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes, a fatty liver, and cardiovascular disease.
Insulin is responsible for the body’s absorption of glucose — or sugar — for energy. Those with insulin resistance experience a buildup of glucose in the blood. Soon the body does not respond to insulin as well, and the sugar level in the blood stays higher, which leads to diabetes. Over time, diabetes can lead to nerve damage, vision loss, clogged veins and arteries — perhaps leading to amputations — and kidney failure.
What other conditions has consuming excess sugar been linked to?
Consuming excess sugar has been associated with cirrhosis, neuropathy, kidney disease, general infl ammation, and cancer. In fact, there are several cancer links, such as breast, colon, and endometrial, that are associated with obesity, which might indirectly feed off of sugar in the diet; some tumor cells can use sugar and insulin as fuel to grow.
How does your body process the sugar in a soda or candy bar?
And how is that diff erent than how it processes the sugar in fruit?
Both fructose, which occurs naturally in fruit, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sweetener used in soda and candy, are
called disaccharides and are broken down into monosaccharides, a more
usable form of sugar by the body. The amount of fructose from
HFCS allows a large amount of

dose of fructose in a 20-ounce soda. Think about that for a minute – most people would likely not be able to consume anything near that number of strawberries to get the same fructose load as a bottle of soda.
All sugars are eventually broken down to the same compound, but HFCS is considered the worst because it bypasses some regulating steps inherent in the body, leading to insulin resistance, fat production, and a fatty liver.
Can sugar cause other problems like headaches?
Eating too much simple sugar may lead to headaches in certain individuals due to how rapidly simple or processed sugars are absorbed, leading to a rapid spike in blood sugar and then a rapid decline. This erratic blood sugar pattern can cause headaches, as opposed to consuming the sugar in complex carbohydrates, which are absorbed more slowly.
What about skin breakouts?High blood sugar, high insulin levels, and
alterations in hormones like testosterone, caused by eating too much sugar, can lead to acne.
How much sugar is OK to consume on a daily basis?
The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons (25
SUGAR from p14 grams) of added sugar per day for women and 9 teaspoons (38 grams) for men. Children between 2 and 18 years old should eat less than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day.
Does eating too much sugar speed up the aging process?
One could argue that eating too much sugar leads to aging due to increased stress on cells. This is not the typical outward aging, such as getting gray hair and wrinkles, but it takes cells
a lot of work to metabolize sugar and this can cause “oxidative stress,” leading to free radicals, which are implicated in the aging process.
What are the names of hidden sugars to be on the lookout for when reading package ingredients?
All of the following are names for sugar: cane sugar, corn syrup, brown rice syrup, barley malt, dextrose,
dextrin, ethyl maltol, and there are many more.

We are ready to win this battle in the Supreme Court as we did in the lower courts, and ensure that every New Yorker is counted in our democracy,” Choi said.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also tweeted, “Adding this question would cause incalculable damage to our democracy. We look forward to defending our victory.”
Francisco asked the high court to review cases before an appeals court has ruled on several occasions, including on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and a military ban on transgendered people. The request, known as a writ of certiorari, is an unusual route, and is typically not successful because the Supreme Court previews to review the all of the lower court decisions before ruling on a case. Only four of the nine justices need to approve the request to hear the case and it is generally done only if there is an imperative need. The justices have not taken action on the DACA case. They have granted the Trump administration’s request to enforce its policy on transgender people while the case progresses through the appeals court.

The show’s title is taken from a quote by Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell. When Senator Elizabeth Warren vociferously objected to Jeff Sessions becoming the next U.S. Attorney General in 2017, she was cut off on the Senate fl oor by McConnell. After Sessions’ confi rmation, McConnell said, “Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared

In July 2017, New York State was the fi rst to make legal representation available to every detained immigrant facing deportation. The LDP and the NYIFUP have handled approximately 1,100 cases since then, primarily at the Batavia and Ulster Immigration Courts. In Batavia, the successful partnership resulted in the release of more than one third of clients between July 2017 and June 2018.
Additionally, immigrants throughout New York State can use LDP’s free legal consultations and screenings. LPD off ers representation in deportation proceedings as well as other cases. It also provides help with fi ling immigration applications for naturalization, employment authorization and permanent residency.

In her own remarks, Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, discussed the government shutdown, immigration and job creation.
“We need to create dignified jobs in New York City, jobs that pay well, jobs that contribute to the community, jobs that are part of a moral economy,” she said.
Her speech came two days after Amazon scrapped its plans to build its HQ2 in Queens. Ocasio-Cortez was a vocal
opponent of the plan.“We don’t have to settle for scraps in the
greatest city in the world,” she said, referring to the $3 billion in tax breaks the city offered to the online retailer. “If others don’t want to negotiate with us, that’s not our problem.”
Ocasio-Cortez discussed her Green New Deal, a proposed economic stimulus program designed to address climate change and economic inequality.
“The Green New Deal doesn’t belong to me. The Green New Deal belongs to indigenous
communities. It belongs to the residents of Flint. It belongs to Puerto Rico. It belongs to the victims of wildfires.”
Ocasio-Cortez promised to hold a town hall every month and asked her constituents to join in and get involved.
“Join your PTA or maybe show up to your community board meeting for the first time,” she urged attendees.
“Or lead a Girl Scout troop,” added the former Girl Scout.
Moreover, Ocasio-Cortez called for collaboration in advancing a collective progressive mission – despite the challenges.
“First, be brave with us,” she said. “What is right is not always what is popular and what is popular is not always what is right.”
“Thank you for being here in the community,” she added, “[and for] choosing to show up for each other.”
