EFFECTIVE CLIMATE CONTROLREQUIRES EXPERIENCE

Meteorologists define climate as theaverage condition of the atmosphereabove a defined region. Temperature, humidity, air movement and solarintensity define the climate. Theseparameters also define the internal climateof a building, but with one key difference:the climatic conditions are determinedartificially, and all the elements -temperature, humidity, air movement andsolar intensity - need to be in equilibriumas the prerequisite for optimum comfortand productivity.

No building is like any other. Its internalclimate will vary in accordance not onlywith the season, but also with its location, how it has been constructed, and the useto which it is put. Thus each buildingrequires a custom design or solution to aproblem in order for that design orsolution to be effective and efficient.

Colt can draw on its experience overmany years of providing all manner ofclimate control designs and solutions insuch diverse buildings as apartments, factories, offices, leisure centres, schools, warehouses, retail parks, car parks andshopping centres. Colt is also active in awide variety of industries, such as food, plastics, engineering, automobile, plastics, chemicals, metals, paper and glass.

Colt has at its disposal an extensive rangeof climate control products and systems. Its latest development is Caloris, whichyou can read about on the followingpages.

All the local units and external mountedheat pumps are connected by a main twopipe, water loop system. Since thetemperature of the water is neutral, neither insulated piping nor copper pipingis needed. Plastic polyethylene pipingoffers many cost and reliability benefits. The pipes can be quickly installed into thesystem without any risk of condensation.

The local heat pump has been engineeredwith many innovative features in mindthat enable it to be compact, efficient andlow in noise output, making it particularlysuitable for hotels and offices.

Caloris is also highly efficient, with itsindoor units achieving a COP of between4 and 6 depending on the application. Thefact that the water temperature of thewater loop is maintained close to normalindoor room temperatures means that theheat pump equipment will always operateat maximum efficiency. More importantly, the uninsulated pipework can use thebuilding’s thermal mass to smooth outpeaks and troughs of load and storeenergy, and hence utilise “free” heatingand cooling from the building fabricitself. Caloris is also suitable for groundsourcing.

The local horizontal heat pump unit (sizes1 to 4) measures just 247mm deep. Thesize 7 heat pump unit measures 339mmdeep. It is amongst the slimmest on themarket and is designed to easily fit withinmost ceiling voids. The local vertical heatpump is less than 500mm high and is thussuited to fitting under windows.

INDIVIDUAL AIR CONDITIONINGBASED ON HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY

Colt has developed WRF (Water andRefrigerant Flow) - a revolutionary airconditioning system designed to meet theenvironmental requirements of bothcurrent and future building regulations, including F-Gas. WRF is a viablealternative to VRF and VRV airconditioning, combining their advantageswith a safe and flexible, water-basedsystem.

Caloris is a typical example of a WRFapplication. Caloris consists of a series ofreverse cycle water source heat pumpsand, generally, a central external heatpump that are all connected together by aneutral water loop. Caloris is suitable forboth heating and cooling, offeringindividual or zone control.

It provides all the benefits ofsimultaneous heating, cooling and energyrecovery found in VRF heat recoverysystems, without needing to move vastquantities of refrigerant around thebuilding.

External central heat pumpThis unit intervenes to stabilise thetemperatures in the water loop only whenthe possibilities to do so via the fabric of thebuilding have been exhausted.

Water loopAll the local units are connected by a twopipe water loop pipework system.Thepipework is plastic and this enables quickinstallation without specialist skills. Because itis uninsulated, energy can be stored in thebuilding’s thermal mass.

The wider the spread of technologies onoffer, the greater the potential there is forsignificant improvement of the internalenvironment.

Colt’s heating, ventilation and air conditioningproduct rangeBenefits of a wide portfolio

For example, natural and mechanicalventilation systems are often dualpurpose, allowing smoke control as wellas day to day ventilation.

Alternatively, natural ventilators can befitted with translucent or transparent lidsor louvres to allow the entry of daylight. In many cases Colt heating systems allowfor the possibility of heat reclaim.

NO COMPROMISE WITH REGARDS TOSAFETY AND SECURITY

Safety and security is high in thehierarchy of needs. Thus mankind willdevise whatever means possible tomaintain a high state of safety andsecurity. This is particularly obvious inthe case of fire prevention. There is awide spectrum of available measures, both active and passive, to reduce theeffects of fire.

Despite these, fires continue to causemany deaths. The greatest threat is not thefire itself but the smoke. Depending onthe nature of the fire, it is possible to fillan area of 10,000 m2 completely withsmoke within minutes. Five breaths is allit takes for consciousness to be lost.

Colt has always been a solutions-ledcompany and has positioned itself at theforefront of development. Colt has andcontinues to be intensely involved infinding solutions to smoke controlproblems.

Colt supplied the world’s very firstinstallation of smoke ventilation in 1954at General Motors, Luton, UK. Colt haspioneered the science of smoke control, and has funded much of the publicresearch over a period of more than 50years. Many National and EuropeanRegulations are based on that research.

All Colt’s smoke control products havebeen tested to and comply with the latestSmoke Control Standards.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF COLTSMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS

These systems:

 Exhaust smoke and heat

 Contain smoke

 Attain a smoke free zone

Enable the immediate evacuation of a building

Allow the source of the fire to be pin-pointed

 Help avoid flashover

 Allow immediate fire-fighting

Contribute to a reduction in damage to property

The smoke control of car parks requires aspecial design approach. Please turn to thenext page for more details of Colt’s latestdevelopments for car parks.

A series of small fans, mounted under theceiling, direct airflow from the air inletopenings towards the exhaust fans, effectively clearing smoke and fumes inthe process. The number and location offans are carefully chosen to match thedesign requirements.

The major practical benefit of the systemis that it removes the need for distributionductwork in the car park. This providesmore space for parking bays. Theenvironment is safer and leads to bettersecurity from CCTV systems. Also, theinstallation of the equipment is mucheasier and significantly faster.

Colt has taken the impulse approach onestep further, and now offers both aJetstream impulse unit and a new Cycloneinduction unit. The new Cycloneinduction unit is available in twoversions. It consists of a low profile, highairflow fan, which creates even greatermomentum and more effective airmovement, thus significantly reducing thenumber of fans required.

Backed by extensive CFD analysis, Coltcan offer the complete car parkventilation package including extract andinduction fans, smoke and carbonmonoxide detectors, control, extractductwork and wiring.

Colt has carried out hot smoke tests toverify the predictions made by the CFDprograms that it runs. These predictionsare capable of providing a realisticvisualisation of the spread of smoke froma car fire.

Colt can provide all system componentswithin a complete package of extractsystems, ductwork, grilles, dampers andexternal terminations, including allnecessary controls and detection.

THE DESIGN APPROACH FOR CARPARKS

For many years, car parks and tunnelshave been ventilated by conventionalHVAC ducted and extract systems.

A relatively new concept is impulseventilation. Impulse ventilation systemscan be used to control the flow of smokewithin a car park, keeping large areaseffectively smoke free. This allows thefire service to see and come close to thefire in clear visibility, allowing effectivefire fighting.

The techniques used are to addmomentum to the air, to thrust it towardsextract points and to ensure that there areno dead spots for fumes or smoke tostagnate and collect. These systems canalso be used to reduce carbon monoxidelevels in car parks.

Mechanical extract systemsThese are designed to exhaust smoke andexhaust gases.

“Colt car park ventilation systems serve the dual purposeof controlling smoke and reducing carbon monoxide levels.”

Besides carrying out actual smoke tests,Colt uses advanced CFD techniques to simulate the

likely flows of heat and gas in a fire situation.

There are many ways to improve the levelof protection against fire. That’s why itmakes sense for Colt to offer a customdesign or solution to a problem in orderfor that design or solution to be effectiveand efficient.

HERE COMES THE SUN

Natural daylight has a positive influenceon the health and attitude of humanbeings. An increase in natural daylightreduces the chance of accidents andincreases people’s concentration. Inaddition by using natural daylight in theright way the cost of artificial lighting canbe greatly reduced.

Another factor is the fact that naturaldaylight changes in colour and intensitycontinuously. Designers and users of thebuilding are well aware of how thechanges in light can influence the internal“feel” of a building. Further-morearchitects naturally like to createbuildings that evoke interest andadmiration.

Therefore designers strive to achieve amaximum of natural daylight in buildings, particularly where people are at work.Accordingly there are examples ofbuildings with large areas of glazing thatcan be seen nearly everywhere.

On the other hand too much daylight inthe wrong places can lead to glare. Andthe use of large glazed building envelopescan give rise to problems as the result ofthe need to provide extensive cooling insummer, and they can lead to excessiveheat loss in winter.

With the drive towards reducing energyconsumption, a key objective for mostbuilding designers is to maximise the useof natural light without the problems ofexcessive solar heat gain and winter heatloss.

Colt can provide integrated glazing andshading solutions to meet thesechallenges. You can see some exampleson the next page.

INDIVIDUALITYNOT CONFORMITY

Architectural trends have moved towardscreating buildings with large areas ofglazing. This has been made possible bysignificant innovations in buildingmaterials as well as technologies thatcontrol the level of comfort within abuilding.

Buildings with large areas of glazingmake the best use of natural daylight andpassive solar heat. However they alsosuffer from the disadvantages ofexcessive heat loads and glare. Originallythese disadvantageous effects could becountered simply through larger andlarger air conditioning systems.Nowadays both the relatively highoperating costs of a building andecological concerns make it attractive toinstall an advanced solar shading systemwhich can reduce solar heat gain whilstmaintaining acceptable levels of naturaldaylight.

External solar shading is the mosteffective way to control the internalconditions of a building. Radiation fromthe sun is partially absorbed and reflectedby the solar shading louvres. As a resultsolar heat gain is prevented from passinginto the building, reducing ventilationrequirements or cooling loads. In thesummer months, the building is protectedagainst overheating by adjustablereflective louvres that are controlled inaccordance with the position of the sun.In the winter months, the louvres may bepositioned so as to reduce heat loss aswell as to enhance any heat coming fromthe sun.

At the same time as daylight levels areenhanced, levels of glare can be reduced.

Colt’s offer can include calculations ofsun angles and heat loads, and theselection of the most appropriate systemfrom a wide range of options. Colt willwork with the designer to produce a solarshading system that meets both theaesthetic and functional requirements ofthe project.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF COLTSOLAR SHADING SYSTEMS

Optimum performance by reducing solar heat gains whilst maintaining acceptable levels of natural daylight

At the same time as daylight levels are enhanced, levels of glare can be reduced.

Reduction of cooling loads in sum-mer

Reduction of heating requirements in winter

 Potential for striking aesthetic impact

 Potential to integrate photovoltaic cells

Refurbishment

Refurbishment of Hotel Hafen, Hamburg (D)

A good example of a successful renovationproject carried out by Colt is theBerlaymont Building, Brussels, to be foundon page 20.

Colt has extensive experience ofrenovation projects. The approach is tolook at every situation individually and toexamine both aesthetic and energeticaspects for opportunities for improvementand optimization.

REFURBISHMENT IS MORE THANRENEWAL

When a building is refurbished, there is agood deal of potential to be unlocked.Refurbishment generally will require anew facade, thereby unlocking potentialfor improvements in energy performanceas well as enhanced appearance. Fireprotection measures can be improvedthereby making it a safer place to occupy.Energy costs can be reduced by bettertechniques, and there is the opportunity tointegrate a renewable source of energy, such as photovoltaic cells, or heatreclaim.

24

“The value of a building can be greatly enhanced throughrenovation. At the same time it can be made a safer, moreproductive and more attractive place to live and work in.”

TO STAND STILL IS TO GOBACKWARDS

Colt invested in research facilities rightfrom its very beginnings. The Companybuilt a wind tunnel in 1931, the first yearof its existence. It was technicallyadvanced for it time and was initiallyused to develop vehicle ventilators. Overthe years Colt has delivered a constantflow of new ideas that have led to thedevelopment of new products andservices.

Since the 1930’s Colt has developed testfacilities in the UK and Germany, and hascarried out hundreds of tests, whether forthe development of its own products or totest how well these products performwhen integrated into a customer’sbuilding under differing conditions.

Colt’s test facilities include testing of airpermeability, water tightness under staticpressure, aerodynamic performance, coefficient, air leakage for ventilators andlouvre panels; a life cycle area; a fire testrig; and an acoustic facility consisting oftwo connected test cells (reverberant andsemi-anechoic). Other test capabilitiesinclude freeze testing, “fall through” testsand structural wind load testing.

COLT’S CONTRIBUTION TO THESCIENCE OF SMOKE CONTROL

Colt played a significant part in thedevelopment of the science of smokecontrol. Following a series of catastrophicfires in the 1950’s, Colt worked with theFire Research Station at Borehamwood, near London, to fund a series of full scaletests. These led to the publication of FireResearch Technical Papers 7 and 10which are the basis for the science ofsmoke control.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY “SERVICE”

Colt’s service does not start with thecustomer’s order. Colt can provide designinput following the initial meeting withthe client. With existing buildings, Coltcan provide a no-obligation survey whichcan cover the measurement oftemperature, energy losses, heatingparameters, air movement, noise, and soon. For smoke control schemes Colt canprovide heat and smoke modelling.Where applicable all relevant data can berun through a computer fluid dynamics(CFD) model or run through a series ofcalculations.

Colt also offers a series of professional“CPD” (Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment) seminars that can becarried out at the client’s premises on avariety of subjects, from air conditioningto smoke control through to solar shading. From time to time Colt also holdsregional seminars. We welcome requestsfrom clients to visit buildings where theycan see the Colt equipment installed andoperating.
