• It is used to help people ORIENT THEMSELVES.
• The NEEDLE on a compass always points NORTH.
How A Compass Works
• The Earth has a NATURAL MAGNETIC FIELD.• The compass needle is a MAGNET which aligns
itself with the natural magnetic field of the EARTH.
• The needle points to a location called the MAGNETIC NORTH.
History of the Compass
• Compasses were invented in CHINA between the 9th AND 11th centuries.
• EUROPEANS invented a new type of compass in the 14th c.

SYMBOL on a MAP, COMPASS or NAUTICAL CHART .
• Another word for Compass Rose is WIND ROSE.
• It is used to indicate the CARDINAL DIRECTIONS:
