A computer is an electronic machine 

• Computers can do anything that someone tells them to do

• Since computers are so fast at processing things, we use them at work and at home for all sorts of things

• Computers are made of two things: hardware and software

Hardware

The parts of a computer that you can touch

• Keyboard• Printer• Monitor• Mouse• Speakers• Cables• Headphones

Software

Instructions that tell the computer what to do• Starfall

• PBSKids

• Word

• Games

• Music or movie players

Internet

• Millions of computers around the World that are connected to each other

Download

• A file taken from another computer and placed onto your computer

Virus

• A program that can come from the internet and damage your computer

Password

• Letters, numbers and symbols that are connected in order to protect your computer and personal information

Information Security

• Protect information from people who should not have it

• It is important not to give any of your personal information to strangers

Computer safety is important because– Keeping your computer safe from viruses, means

keeping your information safe

– Keeping your computer safe, means you can continue to use if for homework or for fun

– Keeping your family safe from people who might want to use your information to do bad things
