Last week in my Sunday hom-ily, I quoted a reflection by a priest in the Northeast who pens a blog called The Concorde Pastor. As we continue to reflect on the implications of discipleship, I will share a portion of that reflection with you:
Who do I say that you are, Lord?
That’s a great question! It might be the most important, the most critical question anyone has ever put to me. Of course, I say that you are God. I say that every week here in church. But who do I say you are outside of church, in my daily life, on all the days between the times I come here to pray? • When confronted with the trag-edy in Orlando –when I ponder the slaughter of innocent life, when I pray for those who died: who do I say that you are, Lord? • When those 21 young men were beheaded in Libya,- because they said you were their God – when I think of them: who do I say that you are, Lord? • When I look at all I have and think of all I want to have - and then consider the needs of the poor: who do I say that you are,

Jesus, I want to say you’re the Lord of my life, God of my soul, the Spirit of all my hopes and desires. But to say all that is to carry the cross of sacrifice and to fol-low you: to deny what I often think is life and to seek and find my true life in you. ****************

Questions to ponder this week: *Are there any areas in your life where is it difficult for you to mani-fest your faith due to embarrassment or fear? What should you do about this? *Who do you say Jesus is?
Two weeks ago, Father Tony, along with members of the parish staff, Julie Delaney and Lorene Knobbe met
for two days at the chancery for a staff retreat. We spent time praying, talking, reflecting and dreaming about
our mission and how that impacts our direct line of work. We also talked about what our priorities are and
should be for the upcoming year. One thing came out loud and clear. It was the obvious priority that everyone
kept coming back to: Prayer.
Isn’t it amazing how this one essential thing can be the area where we stumble or lose our footing? We all
know we need it and we know how, but are we really committing ourselves to a vibrant, dedicated and per-
sonal connection to God, who alone can guide our efforts? Or, are we loosely following what we feel we
should be, driven by our own agendas?
Jacques Philippe in his book Time for God (an excellent read as a reminder of the need for prayer) says,
“Mental prayer is the source of true happiness…If we do not learn to stop completely from time to time, how
to make a space in which we do nothing except think about God, we will find it very difficult to remain in
God’s presence while working. This is how it is with all interpersonal relationships. Someone who believes
he loves his wife and children despite having a very active life, but who cannot find any time to be one hun-
dred percent available to them, may be kidding himself.”
That I can relate to. It is much easier for me to pray as my day is moving along, at a stop light, in between mo-
ments, as I hang up the phone or as I’m preparing a meal. But that stop everything, uninterrupted prayer time
seems harder to find. Often, by the time that moment of downtime in my day arrives, I’d much rather just shut
off my mind and engage in something mindless, binge on some television show or scroll aimlessly through my
phone. But here is the truth that Philippe reminds us of, the truth we know. “If we make God our first concern,
God will look after our affairs much better than we ever can.”
Join us this summer as we embark on the adventure of deepened, heightened and more disciplined prayer. Re-
member the 1 percent challenge that we referenced during Lent? One percent of my day is a little less than 15
minutes. Can we make it a priority to give that
time to God during these summer days? Can we
as a parish say that our first guiding value of
“seeking Jesus” truly is our goal and that we are
committed to spending some quality time with
Him each and every day. Perhaps as we do so, we
all will be moved more clearly by the ways the
Holy Spirit is guiding our lives, our families and
our parish as we live out the mission that we have
been given.

over 70 volunteers!
This week at VBS we learned that….
Jesus gives us hope.
Jesus gives us courage.
Jesus gives us direction.
Jesus gives us love.
Jesus gives us his power.

As the summer heats up, so do Junior High Youth Nights! Our next one will be Monday, July 11th from 7:30-9:30pm at Veter-ans Memorial Park in Betten-dorf. Why so late? Because there will be glow sticks EVERY-WHERE! In the GaGa pit, vol-leyball court, and soccer field. Come prepared to light up the night and bring your own glow in the dark gear too!
Did you know that once a month, on the second Thursday, a Healing Mass is celebrated at a nearby parish? All are welcome to the next Healing Mass on July 14th at St. Mathias Church in Muscatine (215 W. 8th St.). Come at 6pm to receive the Healing power of Christ's Mercy in Confession. Praise & Wor-ship Music begins at 6:30pm and Mass is at 7pm. Following Mass, stay to take advantage of being prayed over by one of our prayer ministry teams for physical, emotional, or spiritual healing or for a greater release of the Holy Spirit in your life.
