Founder’s Day Celebration June 1st
Our 55th annual Founder’s Day celebration is being
held on Saturday, June 1, at the 4 p.m. Mass, after
which the 2019 Eddy Awards will be presented. Every-
one is invited to join us at the Mass as the 2019 recipients
are announced and help us to congratulate them.
In addition to new recipients of this Award, we will
remember all those, living and deceased, who worked to
build this faith community as well as those who continue
to give and share. We’ll pray that God’s love for us and
our love for Him may continue to grow in our hearts and
in the hearts of our neighbors, children and grandchildren.

The Confessor.
Parishioners honored with St. Louis Awards
says, “the parish was alive
and offered many
opportunities to get
involved.”
During her younger years as
a working mother, Elaine was
very active in all school
activities with her children, as
well as in professional
(nursing) organizations, even
holding national office
positions. She enjoys being
involved in all aspects of her
busy life.
Elaine retired after working
as a Registered Nurse in the
Nursing Professional
Development Department at
Ochsner for 35 years. After
retirement, she became a
volunteer at Ochsner. Elaine
enjoys being around people
and became very involved at
St. Edward from the
beginning. She planned and
recently shared their thoughts on their years of life,
service and community at St. Edward.
Elaine Hinojosa has been married to Oscar for 52
years. They have five daughters (Anita, Adelita, Julia,
Sylvia and Rebecca) and six grandchildren. They have
been parishioners of St. Edward since 1968. Elaine was
raised in the Southern Baptist Church. Religion and
faith was a big part of her family life. When she was
planning her marriage to Oscar (who was Catholic),
she knew it would be important that their family attend
church together. So she began receiving instruction in
the Catholic faith and five days before her wedding,
she was received into full communion in the Catholic
Church. After moving to the Metairie area, she knew
that St. Edward was the right parish for them. Elaine
Parishioners Elaine
Hinojosa and Matt Tarifa were awarded the Archdiocese
of New Orleans’ Order of St.
Louis Medallion honoring
their years of dedicated
service to St. Edward the
Confessor Parish. In addition
to Elaine and Matt, Justin
Gibson, a St. Edward
parishioner, is receiving the
St. Louis Award from the
Archbishop himself for his
long-time work in the
Information Technology and
Internet Services of the
Archdiocese.
Elaine, Matt and Justin
joined honorees from other
parishes in the Archdiocese
for a special service on
Sunday, May 6 at St. Joseph
Church, where Archbishop
Gregory Aymond presented
the awards. Elaine and Matt
On Thursday, May 2, we welcomed Bishop Fernand
Cheri to our parish where 39 high school students
received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Congratulations
to all!

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION
PROGRAM
Your spiritually adopted baby
weighs over one pound now. Her
mother can feel her movement now. Before
she was too small for her to feel. Although
she swam with ease in her watery world,
she needed to be big and strong enough to
kick hard against the outside wall and dent
it - - the inside wall of the uterus has no
feeling. We are mid-way through the preg-
nancy now. Your prayers have helped your
baby’s mother continue with her pregnancy
and to seek the help she needs.
Sacramentals Prepare
Us for Grace
Sacramentals are sacred signs,
“reminders,” instituted by the Church which
prepare us to receive the graces of the
sacraments and sanctify different
circumstances of life. Sacraments, on the
other hand, were instituted by Christ and
actually give us grace itself. This month, our
Evangelization Committee will have
sacramentals available in the back of
church. Holy Cards featuring “Our Lady of
Prompt Succor” will be offered to help you
pray for protection from hurricanes during
this storm season. Holy Water is used as a
sign of our Baptism in Christ. We bless
ourselves, or our children, with it while
praying that we be kept pure from the stain
of sin in accord with our baptismal vows.
Blessed salt is used in the Rite of Exorcism.
We can sprinkle it in our homes while
praying that we be wise and preserved from
the corrupt influence of Satan.
Come Aside and Rest Awhile Summer is here and we look forward to a little more leisure, a little
slower pace and a little more time to relax with family and friends.
Vacation advertisements call out for our attention. Jesus too calls out to
us, as He did to His disciples, “Come by yourselves to an out-of-the-way
place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31)
True leisure includes not only a decrease of work, but refreshing
ourselves spiritually. Pope Benedict once said, “Let us not be afraid to be
silent outside and inside ourselves, so that we are able not only to
perceive God’s voice, but also the voice of the person next to us, the
voice of others…”
We invite you, and Jesus invites you, to consider spending some time
with Him. Come with your spouse, bring your children, or swap
babysitting with a friend for some quiet time alone. Let us not disappoint
Him. Come aside and find real refreshment! Our Adoration Chapel is
open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Save the date for our annual Potluck Dinner: August 17 following the
4 p.m. Mass.
Parish Seder Meal: A Celebration of Our Faith
The annual parish Seder meal, held on Palm Sunday, celebrated our Jewish religious heritage with a representation of a traditional Passover meal. Roy and Jennifer Lacoste and their children, Gavin and Grace, served as the host family, joining Father Seiler and Father Kevin at the head table. Narrator Beverly Denton described the symbolic meanings of the various rituals including the foods tasted, a sample plate of lamb, haroset, unleavened bread and herbs. As it was at a Passover meal that our Lord celebrated His Last Supper — instituting the Eucharist — many of the symbolic actions and rituals of the meal are still reflected today in our celebration of the Mass. Over 100 parishioners participated.
Holy Spirit Novena
The first novena to the Holy Spirit took place in the
Upper Room between the Ascension and Pentecost
Sunday, with the Blessed Mother and the Apostles and
disciples who were gathered there. Our world today is in
dire need of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit! Please join
our parish community in preparation for the Feast of
Pentecost, and pray the Holy Spirit Novena with us
following all Masses beginning Friday, May 31
through Saturday, June 8. Copies will be available in
back of church.
A new light: The
blessing of the fire and
the lighting of the new
Paschal Candle signaled
the start of the Easter
Vigil Mass in April. The
Easter Masses concluded
a week of moving and
beautiful liturgies in our
parish.

coordinated the very first Vacation Bible School for St. Edward in 1977. She taught CCD, was a past member of the
choir and parish prayer line and spent many hours volunteering at the Cochon de Lait.
Elaine was a member of the Charismatic Renewal at St. Edward and from that became a member of the Emmanuel
Prayer Group, which has been meeting for the last 40 years. She loves to read and is a member of two book clubs and a
volunteer reader at WRBH Radio for the blind and sight handicapped. She also enjoys knitting.
Elaine is currently on the Liturgy Committee and is the incoming secretary for the Hilltoppers. She is also a Lector and
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and has been the schedule coordinator since 2009.
Elaine has made life-long friendships in this parish. She describes St. Edward Parish as very “committed to its
parishioners”, offering many opportunities to get involved and many ways for spiritual growth. Elaine says, “I yearn to
have a deeper, more committed, spiritual life…so often I feel like I am ‘living on the edge’”. She participates in various
Bible Studies held around the parish.
Elaine was very surprised and humbled upon learning of this award. She believes in giving back for the many blessings
she has received. Elaine wants to enjoy the beauty of the world around her and the life she’s been given with family and
friends. She plans on continuing to take advantage of opportunities to give back to the Church and community and to
continue learning about her Catholic faith.
Matt Tarifa moved into St. Edward Parish in 2007, having been displaced by Hurricane Katrina a couple of years
earlier. Matt and his wife, Michelle, have two children: Madison is entering her Junior year at Mount Carmel and Alex is
entering 6th grade here at St. Edward. Matt stated, “St. Edward Parish gave us a home long before we ever began to give

St. Edward Retreat Day at
Local Human Trafficking Safe House
Free Indeed is a local faith-based safe house dedicated
to the rescue and restoration of girls who are 12 to 17
years old who have been victimized by child sex
trafficking. The girls come from all over Louisiana, but
many come from the New Orleans area. Most of these
girls have been sold by people they trusted, sometimes
their own parents, up to 40 times per night. Psychological
manipulation and fear continue to hold them captive even
now, long after they have been separated from their
abusers. Integral to their healing is showing each girl the
love of God and teaching each one how to receive
freedom through a relationship with Jesus Christ. On June 12, Fr. Seiler and one of our parishioners will
visit the safe house to direct a Theology of the Body
retreat designed specifically for young girls who have
been sex trafficked. Because of the depth of the physical, emotional, and
spiritual pain, these girls have experienced, we need
significant prayer support to make this retreat as
successful as possible. On the day of the retreat, we invite
you to help us cover the entire day in focused, deep
prayer by committing to pray for one 15-minute time
slot scheduled between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please sign
up on the Respect Life table in the back of the church or
call the number below. You will pray at your own
location. We also need volunteers to help provide the
following items to feed 15 people (homemade, if
possible): cupcakes (to be used as individual “birthday
cakes”), a large pan of jambalaya (or other main entrée),
vegetable, salad and dressing, bread, sweets (cookies,
brownies…), grapes, cheese, pepperoni and crackers, and
drinks. For more information or to provide any of the needed
items, please call 504-874-9225. Thank you!

back, which was why my wife and I got involved. There
is something about this parish, it’s phenomenal, it draws
you in and it’s a positive experience for the whole
family.”
Since moving to this parish, Matt has been very
involved with STEAM, the Cochon de Lait, the school
and the parish. He has participated in the set-up and tear-
down for the Cochon de Lait for years as well as worked
in the game booths. He served as construction chairman
for several years and significantly streamlined the set-up
and breakdown process. He served as Co-Chairman from
2014-2016 and as Fair Chairman in 2017 and 2018.
Matt has been an asset to STEAM, lending his
construction and organizational skills whenever needed.
He helps in some capacity at most of their activities,
including being an usher at the 10 a.m. STEAM Masses.
Matt said he gets involved to help better the ministry and
to be a positive influence for the people. He enjoys the
contribution he is able to give.
Matt will continue to be involved in this parish. He’ll
coach the school cross country team next year and stay
heavily involved with STEAM. He will again serve as Co
-Chairman of the Cochon this fall. He says everyone has a
choice of being a “passerby” or a “fixture”, and Matt is
definitely a St. Edward Parish fixture!
Upon learning he was to receive this award, Matt said
he was honored, but felt a bit undeserving, noting that
there are so many others deserving recognition. “This
award is much appreciated by me, but it’s actually for my
family, because none of my accomplishments could be
done without the love, support and commitment of my
wife and children.”
Congratulations and thank you to Elaine, Matt and Justin

Marvin as a fellow co-worker in the “vineyard of the
Lord!”
