Censuses of 1820 and 1830, together with Marion County, Mississippi marriage records, suggest that Ayres Holliday's first wife (Olivia Johnston) died sometime between 18 1 0 and 1816, thathe married Cenith Simmons in 1817, that she died sometime after 1820, and that he married MahalaLewis before 1830. She had apparently been married before, as the marriage records of Amite County,Mississippi (LDS CD5, I st Edition), show a marriage between John Crow and Mahala Lewis on October9, 1817.1

THE HAZLEHURST COURIERMay 19, 1912

In the passing of Mrs. Nancy Ellis Holliday,Copiah County has lost one of the links that boundus to the early part of the 19th century. She wasborn August 18th, 1834, and was within three monthsof her seventy-eighth birthday. Her character wasformed amid social and religious movements such asdo not abide with us at the present day. TheScriptures tell us of a period in the early days whenthere were giants in the land. In the days when Mrs.Nancy Holliday first opened her eyes on earthlyscenes, men and women of giant purpose andcharacter were made. Every social and religiousmovement tended to the perfection of the Christiancharacter. The bodies of these sturdy old men andwomen seemed made of oak.The same power of endurance and strength wasreflected in their souls Would that our socialorganizations and even the church itself couldinfluence for great character building now as didthe institutions and church of that early day. Shewas reared in religious surroundings, uniting withthe Methodist church July 18, 1857. She wasbaptized by immersion, when received into theMethodist church. Those were the days of the oldcircuit rider. When the preacher came, the peopleknew that the sermon would deal with all the greatfundamental truths of the Gospel of Christ-atopless heaven and a bottomless hell, theheinousness of sin, but with these awful truths camethe gospel remedy, an atoning Savior, who wouldreceive all that came unto Him pleading for mercy. Itis no surprise, therefore, that reared underpreaching like that her character was oak againstthe influences of evil, but it was wax to theinfluences of God’s spirit and word. She was a woman of great faith. She came to hergrave in full years as a shock of corn comes in itsseasons. As a mature shock of corn upon the stalkready to be lifted into the granary for higher uses,so the mother in Israel, her life work completed, herchildren all grown and out from the home, laywaiting to be lifted into God’s eternal place. Andour God, the eternal husbandman, reached down May10th, 1912, just as the sun was setting, and lifted herunto himself. The apostle tells of those whose conversation wasin Heaven. Those of us who visited Sister Hollidayduring the last months of her illness, knew that shehad through faith in God attained to this highaltitude of Christian experience.

Thomas Christine Holliday

Thomas Christine, the daughter ofMr. and Mrs. T.A. Holliday, age 5years and 5 months, breathed herlast Jan. 13, 1912, about midnight.Thomas was playing “lady” Fridayafternoon and her long dress caughtfire. It is thought that she triedto extinguish the flames before shemade an alarm. Everything was donethat loving hands could do, but Godin His wisdom saw best to call herhome. It is so hard to give her up whenshe was so confident that she wasnot burned much and that she was notgoing to die.She will not only be missed by thefamily, to whom she was so devoted, but by every one who knew her, especially by her fond teacher anddevoted little schoolmates. Hergreat ambition was to “miss noschooldays.” She was a greatpleasure to her teacher. To hear herrecite, and to examine her littlesentence and number work made theteacher feel that she had done herduty and her love for her teacherwas so true that she didn’t want todo anything to displease her.Amid all her suffering Friday nightshe didn’t forget to say herprayers. She delighted in singingand said “Mama I think ‘Nearer MyGod to Thee’ is the prettiest onearth.”‘Soon shall we meet again.Meet ne’r to sever:Soon shall peace wreath her chain‘Round us forever; Our hearts will then reposeSecure from worldly woes; Our songs of praise shall closeNever-no never.” -HER TEACHER

1I. N. Holliday, farmer, Sharon, Miss., came originally from Georgia, his birthoccurring in Wilkes county, December 20, 1824, and his parents, Richard I.and Mary E. (Evans.) Holliday, were natives respectively of Maryland andGeorgia. They came to Madison County in 1844 and there the father followedthe uneventful life of a farmer until his death, in July 1857. He was very activein politics. The mother died in 1552. Of the seven children born to this union, all grew to mature years, married, but only too besides our subject are nowliving- Thomas L-, a farmer of this county, and Emily, wife of Frank Cetenings,of Copiah County. I.N. Holliday, the fifth in order of birth, of the abovementioned children, started out for himself at the age of twenty-one yearswithout any capital, and in fourteen years had made $25,000. Miss E. A.Tisdale, who became his wife in 1840, was the daughter of William andFrances (Finney) Tisdale, natives of Virginia. The fruits of this union were tenchildren, seven of whom are living. I" 1861 Mr. Holliday entered theConfederate service, Company E, Eighteenth Mississippi cavalry, and servedas courier for General Loring. He was in all the battles, of his command fromResaca to Atlanta and back to Nashville and Franklin. At the close of the warhe had three hundred and twenty acres of land, but he now has twenty-threehundred acres and raises about one hundred and fifty bales of cotton perannum, besides rising all his own corn and forage. He was also quiteextensively engaged in stock raising-Shorthorn and Holstein cattle andSouthdown sheep. For thirty-five years he has been a member of the MasonicLodge, and has been treasurer of Sharon lodge for years. He also a chartermember of the Knights of Honor. He has always taken a deep interest inpolitics, and was very active in 1875 and 1876 in helping to establish a betterform of home government. He has been industrious and thoroughgoing all hislife, and has amassed a fortune by his own efforts. He and Mrs. Holiday aremember of the Methodist church. Their children are named in order of theirbirth, as follows; William T., a farmer in Madison County: Joseph E., of Sharon:Louias, wife of J.M. Holley; Annie, wife of George Galloway; Martha, wife of H.C. Turner; Sallie, wife of J.M. Pace; and John. All children live in MadisonCounty.
