History and Development

Relatively late start as a collecting focus, which began in 2001

CUL’s appropriated fund, endowments and grants have helped the collection grow quickly

Now over 12,000 volumes in Korean language materials and approximately several thousand volumes of non-CJK language materials about Korea; 1,196 Korean films and videos (as of June 2008)

Comprised of works 70% in humanities, 25% in the social sciences, and 5% in general subjects

One half-time and a quarter-time staff Key Areas of the Collection include:

• Colonial and post-colonial studies• Linguistics, Modern literature & history• Willard Straight photography collection• Popular Culture

CU-Panmun Approval Plan- One-year trial started in January 2009- Nearly 23% of the current fiscal year’s budget is allocated- Price over $100 subjected to negotiation - New titles limited to the proposed subject profile

WorldCat Selection- Aim to streamline acquisition process and making selection process more efficient and economical - Implemented by all CUL selectors since 2006 (except the CJK selectors until 2008)- No Korean vendors as yet- Active sources: LC, Yankees- News of OCLC’s negotiations with Panmun and Eulyoo

1. Willard D. Straight and His Legacy at Cornell University

1897-1901Attended Cornell University, majoring in architecture

1901Appointed to a position with Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service

1904-1905Reuters (some sources said Associated Press) hired Straight as a correspondent during the Russo-Japanese War, which brought him for the first time to Korea.

1. Willard D. Straight and His Legacy at Cornell University

■ During his stay in Korea, Straight created hundreds of photographs and sketches that documented landscapes, village scenes and people.

■ As one of Cornell University’s most famous alumni, Straight’s visual materials held by the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections at the Cornell University Library.

■ 1925After his death his wife made a substantial donation to Cornell to build the school's first student union building, Willard Straight Hall, which was named in his honor.

■ Dragon Day, initiated by as College of Architecture Day in 1901 by Straight, is an annual event at Cornell University.

- Grants Were Awarded at the $3000-5000 Level - Program Open to All Cornell University Library Staff

- Identify the Importance to the Library, Unit Itself, or to the Community of Users - Describe the Benefits and a Clear Case of the Task for Qualification - Provide a Clear and Defensible Budget - Must Match the Goals of the Internal Grants Program - Complete Within a Six to Twelve Month Period

2. Willard D. Straight Photographs Collection Project

■ Collaboration of the Project

● Staff from Different Units of the Library

● Susette Newberry (Visual Resources Archivist, Division of Rare and Manuscript Collection)was responsible for serving as the project consultant to ensure that implementation was compatible with other RMC Luna projects.

● David Jones (Former Digital Imaging Specialist, Cornell Institute for Digital Collections) was responsible for processing images into Luna Insight database.

● William Marquis (Former Digital Conservation Specialist, Digital Consultation and Production Services) was responsible for scanning and editing techniques.

● Sung Ok Kim (Cataloger, Library Technical Services) was responsible for providing captions and cataloging the images.

● Thomas Hahn (Former Curator, Wason Collection on East Asia was responsible for supervising the project.

● Staff Time Allocation (ca. 230 hours)

● Identifying images & assigning accession number, creating spreadsheet for cataloging (60 hours) ● Scanning (54 hours) ● Luna Insight implementation (40 hours) ● Cataloging (66 hours) ● Supervising (7 hours)
