Why I Love My ChurchBy Rae BarhoEddie and I think back to when we met in the Double Eagle in the middle of the dance floor. We stood in a circle to celebrate Holy Communion, joining hands afterward to pray. Sunday School was “Happy Hour.” I remember teaching junior and senior high together - probably no more than 10 kids. There was a strong sense of family and enthusiasm for the beginning of a new adventure walking with each other on the path God set for us. We loved that church! And now we are still walking that path with God at Oak Hill UMC. There are many more of us and we no longer carry the church in the trunks of our cars, but we still carry it in our hearts. We are a strong group of God’s children who love and care for each other and for our community. We care enough to send loving people around the country and the world to provide Christian care and physical work for rebuilding. We care enough to encourage children and adults alike to learn the stories of the Bible and about God’s mercy and love for us. Bottom line - WE CARE! We love this church!

A Time of Rest for Pastor Jim “Jesus said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while,’ for many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” - Mark 6:31

This scene of Jesus’ disciples with no time to rest captures the setting at the Wednesday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast for the pastors at our church. You might have seen them enjoying a quick bite between worship, meetings, and passing conversations. We are so blessed to have “many coming and going,” as the Scripture says, but it is important to remember that rest is important in the midst of the busyness. Jesus showed us that those who work for the kingdom need to get away and be refreshed. The Staff/Parish Relations Committee has approved a two-month sabbatical for Pastor Jim Roberts. As you might have heard Pastor Stella say from the pulpit recently, time away is recommended for all pastors who have served long tenures, but it is seldom taken. Thankfully, we have a strong, healthy church with many competent leaders so that we are able to give this gift without skip-ping a beat. Pastor Jim will take his time off during the month of May and the month of August. In addition to the recommended resting, reading, and reflecting, Pastor Jim will also be celebrating. His son, Coulter, will be graduating from high school and moving close by to attend Texas State University in San Marcos. The time off will allow them to get him settled. We thank God for the blessing of a caring, competent, and committed Senior Pastor who brings gifts so suited to this congregation. May he return as fired up as he was in the pulpit upon his return from Haiti (and may we survive the weeks without his corny jokes).

and just hanging out with them. There were many “God sightings” throughout the week that led the team to focus not so much on the work but on relationships. The team found the people of Leveque to be full of joy and hope in the face of overwhelming obstacles that can only be attributed to their trust in God. On its last day, the team visited a memorial for the thousands who died from the earth-quake on January 12, 2010, and were buried in a mass grave. It was a powerful and somber experience that led the team to know that they will never forget the people of Haiti.

Your Trustees at WorkTrustees have undertaken a couple of projects to save electrical energy. Timers were installed for the bathroom lights in the Sanctuary and Adult Education and Missions buildings and the bathroom fans in Missions, a total of 14 timers. The Facilities Administrator previously installed timers for the fans in the Sanctuary and Adult Education.

The timers are intended to save electrical energy, as bathroom lights and fans often were left on. Timers provide an additional benefit for bathroom fans. The fans, when left running for long periods, evaporate the water from the floor traps and then draw sewer gases into the bathrooms. The timers are effective in controlling this problem.

Austin Energy’s Load Profiler program is now operational for the Main building. The program graphically monitors electrical demand. Pursuant to Austin’s rate schedule that took effect October 1, 2012, all the Church’s facilities are billed as commercial. As such the electric bill is based on the highest 15-minute electrical demand in the billing period plus the amount of electrical use and a customer charge , with electrical demand being the largest cost. For example the church’s March electrical bill was $2,321.71 for electrical demand, $872.83 for electrical usage and $205 for the customer charge. Knowing the timing of the 15-minute peaks is invaluable for controlling the reoccurrence of high electric demand peaks. Preventative measures include the sequencing of heat pumps and other electrical appliances and installing lock boxes at thermostats. Trustees have requested Load Profiler programs for the Sanctuary and Children’s building. It is free for the Main building and Sanctuary. There is a charge for the Children’s building.
