Communication
When I first moved away from home I would write a letter every week. I would also find a phone box on a regular basis and ring home using 10p, give mum the phone number and then she would ring me back and we’d chat for ten or fifteen minutes depending on the time of year (it was cold in those phone boxes especially the ones with a pane of glass missing) or until someone would start hammering on the door and pointing to their watch. Apart from a telegram that was just about all the options covered in the communication department.
We often hear how “young people” are losing the art of communicating because of modern technology. I disagree. It is true we don’t write as many letters using a pen and paper, envelope and stamp. However there is far more to communication these days. The art is choosing which form. For example I’ve one friend who only turns on her mobile about once a month – so texting her is useless, we speak on the phone about once a week. I’ve another who will text several times a week and we keep in touch that way. One or two, especially those in Australia or New Zealand prefer lengthy emails once in a while. Whilst those rather distant friends are happy with the occasional check in on facebook. And of course occasionally it is good to meet up and chat!
I don’t “tweet” preferring at the moment to leave that form of communication to our feathered friends, but I’m told it is a fun and I dare say I’ll join the tweeting fraternal at some point!
So we can text, we can phone, we can email, we can tweet, we can post on facebook, we can skype and even do it with several people at once all around the world from the comfort of our own home! And we can still send a letter, in an envelope with a stamp!
These days I’ve returned to the art of the letter writing when communicating with mum, that way she can read it as many times as she likes and rather than forgetting I’ve rung, the letter is still there fresh as a daisy, tucked away in her knitting bag, so that each time she finds it she is excited by a letter from her daughter!
Don’t give up on the art of communicating………..
See our notice sheet, read the parish mag, follow us on facebook, check out the website, follow the curate on twitter and read his blog……… and once in a while you’ll even find the vicar’s letter!! (Contact phone numbers just inside front page)

Message from Rt Revd Peter Maurice, Bishop of Taunton
The 40 Days of Easter For most people Easter lasts for about three or four days and ends at midnight on Easter Monday, but for Christian people Easter is a season that lasts for 40 days and for good reason. It reminds us of the enduring hope that we have in God and that God has in us – hope that encourages us to work for a better future for humankind, especially for those who are the poorest and most vulnerable. By the time you read this I will have joined with many others in supporting the ‘Live Below the Line’ campaign. From 28 April for five days we will be living on £1 a day both to raise awareness of the issues of food poverty around the world (and in our own country) as well as to raise money for a range of charities who are seeking to address the issue. I will be supporting ‘Send a Cow,’ a locally based charity just outside Bath who focus much of their work in Zambia and other parts of Africa. They provide poor families with the skills they need to build new lives free from poverty and hunger. By providing training, livestock, seeds and support, they restore hope and create stronger communities for the future. You may, for very good reason, not be able to live below the line yourself but I hope you will be generous in supporting those of us who are. Later in May you are also likely to receive a Christian Aid envelope through your letterbox. This too will invite us to be generous in our response to the enduring hope that we have in a God who seeks to bring an end to poverty and injustice. This year the focus is on ‘giving people a future without fear.’ We know that for a growing number of people across the world, the horror of war is part of daily life. Last year Christian Aid, through the churches, raised £12 million. War tears lives apart – our generosity can help put them back together. The 40 days of Lent are over and the 40 days of Easter are here. We are invited to believe ever more deeply in the reign of God for our world and we are invited to live in confidence and in hope that the God who has raised Jesus from the dead can and will rebuild and revitalise all that poverty and injustice has shattered, with us as willing partners! +Peter Taunton

How do you live your “Dash”?
I read of a man who stood to speakAt the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstoneFrom the beginning...........to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birthAnd he spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of allWas the dash between those years.
(1940-1999)
For the dash represents all the timeThat she spent alive on earth.....
And now only those who love herKnow what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;The cars... the house... the cash.
What matters is how we spend our “dash”.
So think about this long and hard......Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,That can still be rearranged.
If we could slow down enoughTo consider what’s true and real,
And always understandThe way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,And show appreciation more,
And love the people in our livesLike we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,And more often wear a smile.....
Remembering that his special dashMight only last a little while.

Those memorable school reports… What did your teachers say about your progress at school? The follow-ing were sent into the Daily Telegraph some years ago…. My housemaster wrote: ‘He has an overdeveloped unawareness.’ - Ian Jones, Wirral A friend’s son’s report said: ‘By the time he has mastered French, he will be too old to cross the Channel.’ – M Knaggs, Dorset My teacher observed: ‘The improvement in his handwriting has re-vealed his inability to spell.’ - Colin Sutherland, Switzerland ~ My teacher was a realist: ‘I am sorry to have to tell you that he is do-ing his best.’ Stan Proctor, Surrey

GENERAL INFORMATIONSICK VISITINGWe are entirely dependent upon members of the congregation for information about those who may be ill and/or would like a visit or would appreciate Holy Communion taken to them.
CLERGY DAYS OFFFor reasons of general health and sanity, the clergy need to keep some time each week free of duties. So, if parishioners could normally leave the Vicar free on Mondays, she would be very grateful.
BAPTISM & WEDDINGSNormally, up to 5/6 weeks’ notice is required for baptisms but it is helpful to have 6 months’ notice for a wedding. Monthly Baptism “Surgeries” are held in the Church Hall. Please contact the Vicar in the first instance.
FLOWER ROTAFloral decorations in our Church are arranged by a rota of volunteers and are entirely funded by kind donations from Church members and others, often in memory of loved ones or incelebration of an anniversary. Enquiries, please, to Mrs Olive Dicks, Tel: 788159
FREE-WILL OFFERING SCHEMEThis helps members of the congregation to be systematic in their giving by the use of bank standing orders, where possible, orotherwise by numbered weekly envelopes. If you pay income tax or tax on saving/capital gains, H M Revenue & Customs will pay a further 28% to the Church at no extra cost to you, if you sign a Gift Aid Declaration form. For further information about these matters, please contact Neil Biddiscombe, Gift Aid Recorder (Tel: 788262).Strict confidentiality is guaranteed.
