10-10-14 Greetings Countryside Families! Taste of Countryside On Tuesday, September 30 we experienced our 1st “Taste of Countryside”. This was a fabulous event that allowed ALL Countryside students to try/taste many of the treats produced in our Countryside garden this year. Many thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers – Megan Ulland and Tamara Whear – for guiding and supporting our garden project since its inception, as well as organizing the Taste of Countryside. What a cool day we had! Thank you also to our 5th graders for assisting with picking, preparation and serving for the event. Check out the pictures of the Taste of Countryside on the Countryside homepage! Students tasted garden fresh items, as well as delicious recipes made with items grown in our garden. They included:
Cherry and Grape Tomatoes
Carrots
Turnips
Parsnips
Cucumbers
Kale
Variety of Herbs
Edamame – recipe will be posted on the webpage
Salsa Verde (onions, jalapeno peppers, tomatillos from the garden) – recipe will be posted on the webpage
Potato Leek Soup (leeks from the garden) – recipe will be posted on the webpage A New Twin Cities Marathon x3? Excitement percolates in the halls and through the walls of Countryside Elementary School for many these days. Yes, a love for learning is building; however, a student-led desire is also mounting for even more. Using marathon measurements, the Wellness Committee has created a program encouraging our students to exercise the mind but also the body and soul (heart). With 26 as our favorite number, 2600 pages read is the goal in Grades 3-5. The primary grades are starting this year with 26 books completed. Countryside’s upper playground shows signs of the formation of a new dirt track. Yes, eight laps around equals one mile. How many laps equal 26 miles? Ask your child. Do you know we have a new typing program? Kids are loving it! Typing Pal
for grades 3,4,and 5 is available at home. Grade 2 works mainly here at school.
It is linked right off the main school page under “Quick Links” Encourage
your child to sit up, look at the keyboard, place fingers on the home row of the
keyboard with pointer fingers on the f and j keys, and to be accurate. Speed
will come with accuracy.
Quick Tech Tip: Want a quick way to find something on a webpage- a specific
webpage (vs. a website)? Press the CTRL and F keys and a search box will
pop up. Type in your query word, like “Typing Pal” and it will highlight on the
page where those words are located. Ask your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader to show
you how that works-they know!
If you haven’t had a chance to checkout our Media Center webpage, here is the link.

Until It Hurts: America’s Obsession with Youth Sport and How It Harms
Our Children
Monday, October 13, 2014, South View Auditorium, 7-9PM FREE!
Over the last seventy-five years, adults have staged a hostile takeover of kid’s sports. In
2003 alone, more than 3.5 million children under age fifteen required medical
treatment for sports injuries, nearly half of which were the result of simple
overuse. The quest to turn children into tomorrow’s superstar athletes has often led adults
to push them beyond physical and emotional limits.
Longtime sports journalist and author, Mark Hyman’s recent writing examines the
problematic state of youth sports and opens a much-needed discussion among parents,
coaches, athletic trainers, recreational professionals and others. Leave with these
effective tools to help your child/adolescent learn these important skills.

Jr FIRST Lego League Expo - December 13, 2014 at Edina Arts Performing Center Atrium, Edina High School. New to Edina and to the Twin Cities Metro area this year is a Jr FIRST Lego League (JrFLL) Expo. JrFLL is designed for children ages 6-9 and it features real-world concepts to be explored through research, teamwork, Lego construction and imagination. Teams of 2-6 children are coached by parents, with help from our Edina High School students, examine a real-world scientific topic in-depth, build a Lego model to represent their solution, and present the information they have learned to judges using their Lego brick model and a "Show Me" Poster. Consider it similar to a science fair, but they get to build with Legos!
Information about Jr FLL and details on how to register teams is on the US FIRST
website, http://www3.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/jr.fll.
