ADJOURNMENT : At this stage it was resolved that the Council adjourn f or 15 minutes to enable the ~ouncil to witness the judging of the Newtown candidate in the Beach Girl Contest ~ fter the judging Council r esumed .

His Worship the Mayor (Alderman Mr. R. S . Goddard) as Chairman of the Library Committee submitted a report of a meeting of the Lib r ary Co~~ittee held on 18th December, 1947 as contained in .Folios 5 and 6/1947 of the Committee ' s Report Book and it was r esolved "THAT the report be r eceived and considered seriatim. Aft e r f urther consideration it was resolved that the Library Committee ' s Report be received and adopted and the various rec ommenda tions carr i e d into e ffe ct ."

The Chief Health Inspector submittel a report in accordance with Folios 183 & 184 of the Inspector's Report Book , and it was resolved: "THAT the Chief Health Inspector ' s rep0rt be received and adopted and all its recommendations be carried into effect , and that in accordance with the Chief Health Inspector's report, Notices be served undPr the provision;::, of Section 65 of the Public Health Act directing the ownPrs of premises 39 Phillip St., and 71 Regent St . to carry out the work mentioned within (30) days from the date of notice."

The Engineer subrritted a special report in connection with the proposed improvementc of the drainage facilities in roadway of Burren St. underneath the Railway Bridge at Macdonaldtown Railway Station . It was resolved in view of the differences betwee~ the Engineer's estir1ates and those submitted by the Department of Road Transport & Tramways that a copy o f this Council's Engineer's report be fUrnished to the Department with a request that they give fUrther consideration to the matter in view of the points raised by the Engineer.

The Engineer submitted a special report in connection with the condition of the Council 's motor lorries, pointing out that a breal{down in transport might be expected in view of the worn out condition of the lorries and it was resolved that the report be considered at the next Council meetine.

The Chief Health & Building Inspe cto r submitte a report of the following building applications which had been approved since last meeting :-

1. Factory Brock 's Lane Staircase and staff amenities; Lynx Chemical Co . 2. Galvanised Iron iorkshop at rear 103 Burren St. 3. Rebuild wall of workroom in brick, 152 King St. 4. Dock entrance to St. George's Hall from George St. side. 5. Extension of Bulk Store on roof, C. Bowden & Son, 18 Vlilson St . 6. New Stables, Gartrell White & Co., King St. 7. Enclosing Verandah, 52 Station St., (Cooper Louvres). 8. Increased lavatory accommodation St. Josephs Convent,Baltic St .

Resolved that the approvals be confirmed.

Alderman Bu ler asked if anything had been done in connection with the conversion of the Gas Room into an Aldermen's Room . The ex-Mayor, Ald~rman Bodkin replied that he had not proceeded with the matter as he did not think the Aldermen were enthusiastic about it .

lderman Bugler then moved, seconded by Alderman Elvy that the Council procee d to convert :o . 2 Hall into an Aldermen's Room. Alderman Wright asked that as this was not a matter or urgency that notice be given of the motion . The Mayor allowed the motion to proceed to vote and it was carr ied .
