Tomboy (U)

Director: Celine SciammaStarring: Zoe Heran, Malonn Levana, Jeanne Disson France, 2011, 1 hour 22 minutes, subtitles

Laure is a tomboy who has moved to a new town and passes herself off as a boy, Mickael. Through the long summer holidays she/he keeps up the pretence while running with the local gang in the woods, swimming, playing football, and handling her friend Lisa’s growing attraction. The chance her true identity will be uncovered seems inevitable.

Jack Goes Boating (15)

Director: Philip Seymour HoffmanStarring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Ryan, John OrtizUSA, 2011, 1 hour 29 minutes

Jack, a solitary limo driver, is edging towards a relationship with the similarly hesitant Connie with the help of his best friend, Clyde. As Jack patiently learns the skills to convince Connie of his honest intentions he unintentionally sets in train a tale of love, betrayal, jealousy and, most importantly, friendship. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s funny, sometimes painfully honest directorial debut is a quietly optimistic little gem.

“Philip Seymour Hoffman directs like he acts, with a sharp eye for the small details that cut to the soul of a character.” Rolling Stone

Post Mortem (15)

Director: Pablo LarrainStarring: Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers, Amparo NogueraChile/Germany/Mexico, 2010, 1 hour 38 minutes, subtitles

Chile, 1973. Mario a kind, gentle, man works as an anonymous functionary in the Santiago city morgue. He falls in love with his neighbour, Nancy, a burlesque dancer who briefly responds to his advances. Pinochet’s coup brings down Allende and the bodies start to pile up at the morgue. In the chaos Nancy betrays Mario’s love, so he, like the military who feel the country they serve has betrayed them, exercises his new found power. This is a disquieting, forensic examination of the motives of a little man caught in the wheel of history that asks ‘What would you do?’

A swashbuckling tale that is full of glorious locations, fabulous costumes and cool looking fight sequences, this has plenty of bangs for your buck!

Senna (12A)

Director: Asif Kapadia Starring: Aryton Senna, Alain Prost, Frank Williams, Jackie Stewart UK/France/USA, 2011, 1 hour 45 minutes

A Christmas Carol (PG)

Director: Robert ZemeckisStarring: Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, Gary OldmanUSA, 2009, 1 hour 38 minutes

Scrooge begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk and his cheery nephew. But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take Old Scrooge on an eye-opening journey that reveals truths he’s reluctant to face, he must open his heart and mend his ways if he’s to undo years of ill will before it’s too late. Influenced by silent cinema, the spirit of Tim Burton and – in Scrooge’s moment of torment in the dockside murk and mist – David Lean, this version of Dickens ever-popular Christmas tale is full of attractive festive flourishes, but is told more creepily than usual.

We Need To Talk About Kevin (15)

Ramsay daringly uses the haunting power of image and sound to great effect.

Director: Gilles Paquet-BrennerStarring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Mélusine Mayance, Niels ArestrupFrance, 2011, 1 hour 50 minutes, subtitles

Based on a best-selling novel, this tense, compelling story plunges into the chaos of wartime Paris to mull over the touchy subject of French wartime guilt and how many families hide their dark past. Employing her trademark understated delicacy, Kristin Scott Thomas keeps the melodrama in check as she comes to understand the ‘what-else-could-I have-done?’ complicity in horror of neighbours and friends. Scott Thomas is in the prime of her career in this heartbreaking, wonderfully acted, French drama.

These five stunning films have it all: beauty, danger, and jaw-dropping action. L’Homme du Train/The Man on The Train (12A)

Director: Patrice LeconteStarring: Jean Rochefort, Johnny Hallyday, Charlie NelsonFrance, 2002, 1 hour 30 minutes, subtitles

Witty and wistful, this sly, funny ‘odd-couple’ movie is an example of the value of small-scale cinema. Arriving in a small French town with the intention of robing a bank, taciturn thief Milan is befriended by a garrulous former schoolteacher who is about to undergo bypass surgery. Johnny Hallyday (the ‘French Elvis’) surpasses himself in conveying the inner sensitivity of a hardened criminal whose edgy existence has left little room for comfort or trust. But it’s Hallyday’s unexpected chemistry with the rueful, charming Rochefort that binds this melancomic tale into a credible, intimate whole.

This is a boy’s-own Second World War story, full of derring-do, knockout dames and dastardly Nazis that pits Captain America against a wicked scientist.

Charming, handsome, old-style comic book heroics create

a pacy, punchy, highly entertaining slice of comic-book action.

Mademoiselle Chambon (12A)

Director: Stephane BrizeStarring: vincent Landon, Sandrine Kiberlain, Aure AtikaFrance, 2009, 1 hour 41 minutes, subtitles

Jean’s simple, happy, family life is thrown into disarray when he falls for his son’s teacher and their sexual attraction becomes impossible to ignore. Built on the tiniest moments and pregnant silences of the small every-day tragedies of ordinary lives, this is a touching, chaste portrait of two people fighting to contain their passion from spilling over into a full blown affair.
