Dear Alumnus,As I write my last letter to you as principal of Covington Catholic High School, I want to take this

opportunity to thank some people both individually and collectively. It is inevitable that I will fail to mention someone and nearly impossible to mention everyone, so I want to apologize in advance if I offend anyone.

First to Dave Kline, Linda Bricking, and former principal Steve McCafferty: All three played a role in my hiring in the fall of 1992.

To Fr. John Sterling and Fr. William: For their spiritual guidance as Covington Catholic’s chaplain and for my personal spiritual growth.

To Mr. Jack Kennevan: My former mentor and tormentor who had the faith in me to bring me back to CCH as a guidance counselor and who supported me immensely over the years.

To Michael Sketch: The school board president who took a chance and hired a 34 year-old with very little administrative experi-ence to lead his alma mater, Covington Catholic.

To Mr. Wayne Carlisle, Mr. Gerry Thelen, Mr. George Schneider and Mr. Jack Kennevan: For handing over such a won-derful facility to me. I want them to know that not a day went by that I did not feel truly blessed to be the principal of this campus. Their efforts and commitment to Catholic education makes a difference in our learning community daily.

To Mike Hemmer, Kent Dailey, Kevin Moser, and Tom Kramer: For their tireless work as members of the building committee. They were quite a team - one that I really admired.

To Roy Romes, Nick Seligman, Jack and Debbie Abeln, Dennis Walsh, Tom Cochran, Tom and the late Patty Dusing, Tom and Karen Ford, Bob Placke, Jenny Adams, Kevin Moser, Mike LaFever, and Debbie Klare: The core group of bingo workers that leads by example. Their commitment, dedication, financial support, and overall care for the school are extraordinary and inspiring.

To Kent Dailey, Tom Kramer, Kevin Moser and John Nienaber (2 years): My four school board presidents who trusted me and supported me as we phased into a new building, faced an enrollment of 458 students, addressed a $450,000 budget deficit, and implemented $193,000 of budget cuts. They were my confidants and counsel, and their leadership is much appreciated.

To Bob Hoffer: For being both my friend and my sounding board for the past five years. He was a resource to me in many ways and for that I am truly grateful.

To Mr. Frank Sommerkamp: His leadership on the Northern Kentuckian of the Year committee has elevated the event to an elite award that epitomizes Covington Catholic.

To the Parents: For establishing a strong educational foundation for their sons, for their support and volunteerism, and for their commitment to Catholic education.

To the Alumni: I will miss the almost daily interaction with them. Their care and concern for Covington Catholic are inspira-tional and genuine, and I could always count on their support.

To Mary Lenihan: As cafeteria manager, for giving the lunches a life of their own, for taking a risk with the new biometric lunch system, and for making the lunches such a powerful recruiting tool. I really have a lot of respect for what she does on a daily basis.

To Joe Mangan: For taking care of our beautiful facility. Joe and I were together for almost my entire 15 years. He is a tremen-dous asset to Covington Catholic.

To Lois Flaherty, Diane Kohlhepp and Kathy Crail: Lois kept the front office running smoothly. Diane helped me in one way or another for nine years and always came through for me. Kathy was a rock for me. She always kept me on schedule and exercised extreme patience.

Covington Catholic High School was established in 1925. Our mission is to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Covington Catholic is the only all-male high school in Northern Kentucky, and serves the parishes of

Blessed Sacrament, Mother of God, St. Agnes, St. Ann, St. Boniface/St. James, St. John, St. Joseph and St. Pius X. Visit our website at www.covcath.org.

To Jack Kaelin and Dan Tieman: They have been role models for me. Their wisdom, commitment, and love for Covington Catholic High School are unmatched by anyone in its 83 year history. Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey.

To Charlie Hartman: For his efforts as the Dean of Discipline and living out the belief that no one person is above or beneath the rules. It is a thankless job.

To Sue Finke: Her “get it done” attitude is contagious, and she epitomizes the intelligent worker who has a heart of gold. Her commitment to advanc-ing Covington Catholic is exceptional, and she has positively influenced and changed the lives of many people. The outstanding work of her and her staff is vital to the future of the school.

To Mike Guidugli: I know it was difficult going from the youngest administrator to the oldest in a matter of months back in 2003, but he handled it like he handles all things – with calmness and professionalism. The insight and experience he brought to discussions and decision-making meetings were invaluable.

To Tony Zechella: I consider it divine intervention that we had the oppor-tunity to collaborate together when we both taught English in 2000 - 2001. It provided a glimpse into the future for us, as we would later become administra-tive colleagues. His attentiveness to the many tasks presented served everyone perfectly.

To the Students: I will miss watching them grow spiritually, academically, physically, and socially during their four years. They brought a little of every-thing to my job, and really made my 15 years both memorable and enjoyable.

To the Faculty: I always felt that they believed in me, that they listened to my goals and plans, and trusted that we were all in it together. And during it all, their commitment to high expectations and academic excellence never wavered. I am proud to say that I taught and coached with them, worked with them as a coun-selor, and served as their principal. They are why I consider Covington Catholic High School to be one of the premiere high schools in the state.

To my wife Tammy: We first met when I was teaching which I believe intrigued her at the time – I hope she does not have any regrets. We both know that she has sacrificed much for my career. As I continue to work and we raise a family, my number one goal will always be to celebrate our 50th wedding anni-versary together. Only 40 more years to go!

Lastly, please know that the needs, the aspirations, and the successes of Covington Catholic High School will always be a part of my prayers, and that I have faith that all the dreams for Covington Catholic will be realized.

Yours in education,Michael Clines

2008 Northern Kentuckian of the Year

Mr. Toebben was honored on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center with a noon luncheon hosted by Covington Catholic High School in front of a crowd of over 550 people.

This year marks the 12th annual Northern Kentuckian of the Year Award. It is an honor reserved for a community member that has distinguished himself as a leader dedicated to both the economic and social well-being of the Northern Kentucky region. The Chairperson this year was Matth.’s son, Mr. John Toebben of Toebben Companies.

Mr. Toebben was honored for his incred-ible achievements since immigrating to the United States from Lorup, Germany in 1953 at the age of twenty-one. Mr. Toebben started his own business in 1955, known today as Toebben Builders and Developers. His first custom homes were built off of Fortside Drive in Ft. Mitchell, KY. He met his wife LaVerne, from Delhi, at the Fenwick Club in Cincinnati in 1954. They were married in November 1955. LaVerne took over the bookkeeping for the business when she realized Matth. had difficulty paying the bills because he was still learning to read and write English. Later she scaled back her time at the office when she started to have children, who are Susan, John, Diane, William (Bill) and

Elizabeth. The sons – John ’77 and Bill ’81 are graduates of Covington Catholic, and John’s son, Jake, is a junior. In 1971, Matth. started the well known community Country Squire Estates, now operated by John. In 1988 he started the commercial-industrial division, Toebben Construction as well as Toebben Ltd. Building, where he owns and leases industrial and commer-cial buildings throughout the tri-state area. Bill operates and manages this division. In 1979, Matth. and a partner, Judith Phillips started another company, known today as Stand Energy Corporation, a natural gas marketing company selling natural gas to commercial and industrial businesses in 12 states.

Not only is Mr. Toebben an excellent businessman, he is also very involved with the community. Mr. Toebben served twice as the President of the Home Builders Association in 1965 and 1982. Matth. is a strong supporter of education and has contributed to many schools: Covington Catholic, Notre Dame Academy, Holy Cross High School, Thomas More College, The Springer School and Gateway Community & Technical College. At Covington Catholic he was one of the original members of the S.C.O.R.E. com-mittee which helped obtain land in 1977 to build the now football/soccer field.

Frank Sommerkamp, emcee for the luncheon, surprised even family members at the luncheon when he revealed to the crowd the original plywood suitcase Matth. constructed himself for his first journey to the United States. The audience was also entertained with a video by some of Matth.’s closest friends Ralph Drees, Jim

Huff, Ed Bessler and Bill Zeck who shared some special memories about the honoree.

The Northern Kentuckian of the Year luncheon benefits Covington Catholic High School which in the fall of 2007 was desig-nated by the U.S. Department of Education as a No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Covington Catholic was one of only three private/parochial high schools in the nation in 2007 to receive the national award. In addition, 100% of the Class of 2007 matriculated to college and 80% of its alumni live in our area. Truly, Covington Catholic and its alumni positively impact the Northern Kentucky Community, and the luncheon provides a vehicle for the business com-munity to support Covington Catholic’s tradition of excellence in education.

On Wednesday May 7th faculty, students, alumni and friends stopped by Covington Catholic to celebrate Mr. Don Buchanan (English), Mr. Ron Durham (Fine Arts/Choral Director) and Fr. William Fitzgerald’s (Religion/Chaplain) service to education. Each of these teachers had over 30 years in education. We wish Don and Ron the best on their retirement. Fr. William has accepted a new assignment as instructor and Chaplain of Christendom College near Front Royal, Virginia. All three of these fine teachers will be missed by the Covington Catholic community. We thank them for their dedi-cation to education and service to Covington Catholic and wish them and their families the best of luck.

On Wednesday, May 21, the Covington Catholic High School Booster organization sponsored an event where friends, co-workers, students, alumni & parents honored Principal, Mike Clines, for his many contributions and accomplishments as principal, teacher, counselor and coach. Principal Clines accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the Diocesan Department of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Covington where he will assist Bishop Roger Foys and Dr. Larry Bowman, Superintendent of Schools, to increase enrollment in the diocese’s 28 elementary and nine high schools together serving more than 11,000 students, along with working to foster collaborations between schools. Covington Catholic High School wishes Mr.

Clines the best and knows that he will bring the same passion, dedication and wisdom to the other catholic schools in the Diocese of Covington, just as he has brought to Covington Catholic.

Celebrating Education

Bishop Roger J. Foys has appointed Robert (Bob) J. Rowe as the new principal of CCH. Mr. Rowe comes to Cov Cath from Bishop Brossart High School.

Mr. Rowe earned a bachelor of arts degree from NKU in 1996. He earned both his Master’s Degree (2001) and his Rank I in Administration (2004) from Xavier University. He began his teaching career at St. Anthony in Taylor Mill in 1996. Two years later Mr. Rowe had the opportu-nity to go back to his Alma Mater, Bishop Brossart, where he would serve as teacher, counselor, coach, dean and assistant principal for the next 10 years.

Upon accepting the job as Principal of CCH, Mr. Rowe said, “I am honored to be presented with the opportunity to serve as principal of Covington Catholic High School. Covington Catholic has a strong respected reputation spiritually, academically and athletically. I pledge to do my best to continue to advance the high standards, values, principles and the tradition of Covington Catholic High School and to serve to the best of my ability ‘with a spirit that will not die.’”

Mr. Rowe also noted that one of the reasons he sought the position was that, as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Covington Catholic balances its high academic standards with a mission to serve all students, as illustrated by the school’s Academic Support Program. Mr. Rowe was instrumental in creating a similar program to facilitate student learning, the Academic Enhancement Program, at Bishop Brossart High School.

Welcome Mr. Rowe. We look forward to your joining the CCH family and helping us to carry on the great tradition of the Colonels.

May 20th, 2008 118 seniors and their parents attended the Baccalaureate Mass at St. Agnes with Father William presiding. This day is not a day of cele-brating the achievements of individu-als; rather, it is a day of celebrating the many gifts of the past four years as well as the blessing of family and friends. After mass the soon to be graduates and their parents attended a luncheon at Receptions. Honors and awards were presented. Three new scholarships were awarded. The Kelsey Sorrell Memorial Scholarship was given out by her father Steve Sorrell ’75, the Science award, renamed the Jon Biedenharn Award was presented by the Science chair Mr. Bill Krumpelbeck and Al Hertsenberg presented the tennis scholarship. A military scholar-ship was awarded to Jay VonLehman who plans to attend West Pont. The salutatorian address was delivered at the luncheon by Kevin Murray who plans to attend Xavier University in the fall. Graduation that night was held at Thomas More College. Proud parents, grandparents, friends and relatives of the graduating class filled the Conner Convocation Center. Mr. Joe Gross, President and CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center and 2007 Northern Kentuckian of the Year honoree gave the commencement address. Joe stressed that the values, friendships, education and camaraderie found here at Covington Catholic would take them to new heights in college and later in life. Aaron Noll had the honor of addressing the class of 2008 as valedic-torian. Aaron plans to join his brother Andrew ’05 at Vanderbilt University in the fall. Bishop Foys concluded the evening with a brief talk stressing that what ever the graduates end up doing to do it well. Spring 2008 7

Just five years after its construction of a new academic center, Covington Catholic High School is expanding and improving its sports facilities with a $1.2 million multi-sport building this summer. Paul Hemmer Companies has been tapped to construct the new 8,600 sq. ft. two-story sports building where the “C” on the hill is located. At the same time a grotto dedicated to Mary and the Marianist Brothers who founded Covington Catholic High School, near the Roy Romes Concession stand (visitors side of the football field) and adjacent to the multi-sport building, will be constructed.

The new two-story building will serve a variety of sports including baseball, soccer, track and field, cross country and lacrosse. A multi-purpose room, weight and locker rooms as well as public restrooms will be featured in the new facility. Offices for coaches will also be constructed within the facility along with a state of the art athletic training room. “This new facility is necessary to meet the growing needs of our school and sports programs,” said Principal, Bob Rowe. “The current sports facility is inadequate to serve all the students participating in the different sports teams.” Covington Catholic enrollment is now over 500 students and more space is needed for the athletes. The football program will continue utilizing the existing Knochelman Building for its sports and training facilities while baseball, soccer, track, cross country and lacrosse will utilize the new building.

Dave Heidrich, chairman of the school building committee and a CCH school board member, had this to say about the new building, “The Knochelman Athletic Building has served Covington Catholic well but with increased enrollment and sport programs, the student/athletes and coaches need additional space.”

In addition to the sports building, a grotto will be constructed this summer by Tom Schutzman, CCH parent, Steve Schutzman, Tom’s nephew, and other vol-unteers. The grotto will serve as a sanctuary to Mary and a place of prayer and reflection for the students. Covington Catholic was founded by Marian brothers and formulated as an institution devoted to Mary. This will be the first outside display of reverence to Mary on the school property since the construction of the new school. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of winter.

Groundbreaking for the New Grotto and Multi-Sport Building

Friday, May 9, Eric Meier was pleas-antly surprised with the news that he was the recipient of the 2008 College Scholarship awarded by the Kenny and Brian Williams Fund. He will receive $5,000 towards his college education.

Eric held a 4.007 GPA and was ranked fourth in his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society and received first honors every year of his high school career. He was a member of the JETS TEAMS (Junior Engineering Technical Society Teams of Engineering Aptitude Mathematics and Science) Competition of which he recently helped his senior team place third in the nation. Eric most recently was the Secretary of the student senate. He was a member of the ski club and fishing club and had participated in cross country, baseball, track and field, and intramural volleyball and basket-ball. He volunteered with the Special Olympics, Madonna House, St. Pius X, March For Life, Zalla House, and HONK just to name a few.

Eric will be attending Purdue University in the fall. He will be in their Freshman Honors Engineering Program and plans to major in Aeronautical Engineering.

In May, Blessed Sacrament eighth-grader Kyle Surace was presented with the wonderful news of his receiving the incoming freshmen scholarship from the Kenny and Brian Williams Fund. Principals from all Covington Catholic feeder schools nominate one student who they feel is deserving of the scholarship. Each nominated student wrote an essay explaining why they would like to attend Covington Catholic. The board members of the Kenny and Brian Williams fund choose the winner based on the essay, the principal’s recommendations and school performance.

2008 ALUMNI BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

8 Cov Cath Journal

There is nothing better going on in March when CCH basket-ball games are over, the NCAA basketball tournament is about to begin and the alumni come back to the gym for a weekend to battle it out for the honor of being the alumni basketball champs with their team picture to hang in Williams Way for a year.

This year’s tournament had a record number of players 106 consisting of 14 teams which forced the tournament to play 10 games half court on Friday night. That meant twice as many timers, clocks, score keepers and referees for each game. It was a record crowd for spectators as well. The atmosphere in the gym was like playing high school intramurals all over again. Starting on Saturday morning the games were played on the full court. On Sunday three teams out of 14 were in the hunt for the championship. They were team Erpenbeck, McQuade and Kennedy. In the semi-finals it was Erpenbeck against McQuade. Probably the best game of the tournament that went into double overtime. Todd Jacobs and Brian McQuade had 21 points but fell short to Erpenbeck who won 68-66. Matt Nesthide led the win with 26 pts. with Steven Muck coming in with 18. Needless to say team Erpenbeck was exhausted when they had to play Kennedy for the final game. It was hard for team Erpenbeck to come back but Nesthide posted 16 pts in the first half to make it interesting but the balanced team of Kennedy pulled away in the 3rd quarter to win 68-47. Thanks to everyone that came out to watch the games, Mickey Fritz for organizing the tournament, Jerry Arrasmith for designing and printing of the tee shirts, the past parents who helped with registration, kept score, ran the clock and thanks to Dan Shields who scheduled the referees for the tournament. It was a great time and we are looking forward to a big event next year! Listed are the teams and players in the 2008 Alumni Basketball Tournament.

2007-2008 Annual Appeal Thank you to all who contrib-

uted to the 2007/2008 Annual Appeal. To date (6/18) we have raised $185,941, exceed-ing our goal of $185,000. We will be accepting donations to the annual appeal through the summer. Check out the class comparison to the right and

feel free to help move your class ahead. Less than $100 separates the class of 1977 from the class of 1974.

The Annual Appeal is a driving force behind Covington Catholic’s ability to continue the tradition of excellence generation after generation. The funds generated by last year’s Annual Appeal helped to minimize the tuition increase ($100), supported tuition assistance to forty-one students ($148,472, which is a record amount), purchased

Alumni SpotlightPhilip Schworer from the class of

1973 was inducted as the 116th President of the Cincinnati Bar Association on May 9th. Phil first became involved in the CBA in 1985 through the environmental law committee during his last year of law school.

Phil has fond memories of his time while at CCH. He remembers a feeling of spirit and the sense of belonging to an organization along with experiencing the value of team work. When asked how CCH helped prepare him for the future Phil had this to say “My education at CCH was the start of my passion for science and math. To this day, I have fond memories of Biology, taught by Ms. Pat Sommerkamp and Calculus taught by Mr. Tom “PaPa” Krisa.” He remembers cel-ebrating Earth Day his sophomore year. They removed trash from the creek that used to run between the school and the property to the north, thus contributing to his interest in the environment.

Education is very important in the Schworer family. His father, a physician, went back to school to earn a specialty in allergy and respiratory medicine when Phil was in college and his mother earned her degree in nursing while Phil was in high school. Phil would go on to receive both his bachelor’s degree in biology and his master’s degree in environmental science and engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He followed in his parents’ footsteps of going back to school while raising a family and working. By day he was an environmental engineer and by night a law student at NKU’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law. That example of commit-ment to education by the Schworer family is evident in the success-es of the Schworer’s three sons. Their oldest, Andy ’00 is working in information technology for the U.S. Department of Defense in

Fort Meade, MD., earning his master’s degree at the University of Hawaii. Their second son, Alex, graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design and now does computer-aided movie animation for Laika, Inc. in Portland, Ore. The youngest son, Adam ’07 is studying biomedical engineering at the University of Louisville.

Phil knows that when you give of your time, talent and treasure to local charities and civic organizations you get back so much more. His genuine personality and generous heart is evident when helping others. He has served on the Northern Kentuckian of the Year luncheon committee for Covington Catholic since 2005. He is involved in the Just the Beginning Foundation, a group formed by federal minority judges to increase the number of minority students entering the legal profession. He has chaired the Northern Kentucky United Way Campaign, but the organization that his closest to his heart is the Redwood Rehabilitation Center where he is currently President-Elect of the Board of Directors. He will become President of the Board in 2010. He started off by selling raffle chances and would later chair their capital campaign that raised $6.3 million dollars. He has been on the boards of the NKY Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Northern Kentucky and is cur-rently on the board of Leadership Cincinnati.

In an article featured in the Cincinnati Bar Report - May edi-tion, Phil was quoted as saying “I am a quiet supportive leader. I enjoy empowering the people I work with to help them exceed their expectations about their leadership abilities”. These words summa-rize who Phil Schworer is, someone who genuinely cares for others and gives of himself in order for others to succeed. Phil is currently a member of the environmental law department of Frost Brown Todd LLC. He represents business and industry in all aspects of environmental, health and safety issues.

On Thursday, May 29th, two Cov Cath grads names were announced as part of the upcoming Dawahares/KHSAA 2009 Hall of Fame. He also led the NKU’s men’s basketball.

Please keep our alumni serving in the military and their fami-lies in your prayers.2001 Sgt. Adam landrum returned from Afghanistan after a year long deployment with the National Guard on March 6th. He is a member of the Kentucky National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery. They participated in more than 500 combat missions as it sup-ported military police opera-tions for coalition forces. Matt Ryan ’04 graduated from Xavier University where he earned his commission on May 16th.

Sportsfest 2008

On March 18, 2008 over 400 people came out to socialize, bid on prizes, eat, drink and listen to Steve Cauthen, the featured speaker. Steve talked about being the youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown riding Affirmed in 1978. Even though this was 30 years ago, he is the last person to win the triple crown. A feat not taken for granted when you think about this year’s favor-ite Big Brown.

Thanks for everyone who attended and a special thanks to Bilz Insurance and Mike Schlotman for their gener-osity. The event made over $77,000 which will help the Boosters continue their commitment of support to athlet-ics and the new academic center for Covington Catholic. Tim Reese, this year’s chairperson would like to thank the committee members, Marty Kamer- auctioneer, Jeff Piecoro – Master of Ceremonies and the “mom volunteers” for making this night a success.

A Day Of ReflectionBrad Fritz ’02 gave a very compelling and inspiring presentation, via PowerPoint, to the

junior class as part of their “day of reflection” on Friday, March 14th. Brad was paralyzed in an accident by a drunk driver when he was a sophomore at Covington Catholic and communicates via an electronic device where he types in his words.

His presentation touched on his childhood and the first part of his high school career. He then went into detail about the night of the accident and the pains that followed him for the next several years as he recuperated both physically and mentally. He even went through an even darker period where he considered suicide on several occasions. But it was a Covington Catholic retreat that turned his life around. He came back from the retreat with a new view on life. The retreat helped to bring his faith back in God and he realized that he was hurting himself. He no longer considered suicide and was happy to be alive. He stated in his presentation that he had learned to cherish the good things and hang on to them long enough that it drains out the bad things. He ended his presentation with these final words to consider: I believe in God, but if you don’t believe and can find no real reason to believe, consider this:• If you live your life like there is a God and there turns out to be no God, what do you

lose?• If you live your life like there is no God and there turns out to be a God, you spend

eternity paying for it.There wasn’t a person in that gym that wasn’t moved and touched very deeply by Brad’s story. Everyone left the gym with a

new appreciation for life. Brad graduated from Thomas More College this past May with a degree in Communications and a minor in Accounting. He

wants to become a motivational speaker.

In Memoriam

To the Covington Catholic Community:Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. There were times we felt we couldn’t face another day and you were there,

like an extended family. It began with a beautiful Memorial Prayer Service, you were there. There with loving hands to hug us and guide us.

There with meals to keep our strength and cards . . . cards everyday. You honored Kelsey and our family with your tremendous love, visits and gifts to the Memorial Scholarship Fund.We feel embraced by your support. When we couldn’t do the simplest things, like be in public, we went to Trevor’s

game at Covington Catholic and you were there with hugs and kind words. The bracelet and collage from the basketball team parents is something we will always cherish. Thank you. Knowing so many people were praying for our healing has given us strength when we needed it the most.

Kelsey helped her Dad with the Saturday grade school league at Cov Cath since she was a little girl. She followed her brother Tyler and Trevor through their years at Cov Cath. She loved rooting for the Colonels and was there with Trevor when he scored 28 points against Beechwood. The impact Kelsey had on your lives from the stories you’ve shared – have carried us through this difficult time.

With a Spirit That Will Not Die, our love and gratitude,Steve, Terri, Tyler and Trevor
