“Identity Crisis”Some of our readers have been asking the question, “Who
is the Armchair Gardener?” As the grandmother of five older grandchildren, I am truly the Armchair Gardener. It’s been fun writing articles in the Shopper for the past two and a half years. I’ve enjoyed sharing tips, information, and sugges-tions with our readers. Some may not be able to take classes or attend meetings. The Shopper is delivered, free of charge, to every mailing address in the county.
My grandmother, who was a wonderful grower, taught me to love plants and flowers. My father was a great gardener! Arranging flowers has been an interest since being ex-posed to my mother’s “Pause for Living” magazines (Coca~Cola Com-pany) as a teenager. Fifty years later, I still have those magazines.
I’ve attended many programs, classes and workshops over the past thirty-five years. Membership in two garden clubs led to Flower Show Schools and Flower Show Judges Symposiums. I’m an accredited Mas-ter Flower Show Judge Emeritus.
In recent years, health issues have caused me to discontinue much of my gardening and ar-ranging activities. My wonder-ful and patient husband had six
raised garden beds built for flowers and patio containers provide herbs. The Newnan Utilities has a great compost for flowers and shrubs. It’s still a work in progress. I continue to read, study, and attend programs and shows. It’s an enjoy-able challenge keeping up with changing styles and rules of design and horticulture.

I’ve been told I need orthopedic sur-gery? What is orthopedic surgery and where is it performed?
Orthopedic surgery includes any surgical procedure performed on your bones or joints. Many of these procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting, which means that the patient can go home later the same day after having surgery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I need help with acid reflux. I have battled it for seven years, and until recently I have used Prilosec, but it has stopped working for me. I tried AcipHex and Protonix but didn’t feel well when taking them. Now I’m on Prevacid. Is it OK to take indefinitely? I wonder about Nexium. My doctor told me to take any acid reducer that works. What do you consider the best long-term medicine? -- F.H.ANSWER: Acid reflux, heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are different names for the same thing -- the upward splashing of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the long tube that brings food from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus can’t handle those corrosive juices, and the result is burning pain.
Can you identify any food or drink that brings on your symptoms? If you can, eliminate it. Potential trou-blemakers are fatty foods, fried foods, spearmint, peppermint, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruit and caffeine. You prevent nighttime heartburn by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. In that position, gravity keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Weight reduction almost always lessens symptoms.
I like your doctor’s approach. Use the cheapest medicine that keeps you free of pain. Antacids often can fit the bill: Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox and the many others. The most effective medicines are those called proton pump inhibitors: Dexilant, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and AcipHex, some of which are available without a prescription. They practically turn off acid production. Some doctors like to have their patients stop use after a year to see if symptoms remit. If they do, so much the better. Less expensive are Tag-amet, Pepcid, Zantac and Axid, which cut back on acid production and are obtainable without prescription.
One downside of indefinite use of proton pump inhibitors is the possibility of vitamin B-12 deficiency. Acid is needed to absorb it. The same goes for iron, calcium and magnesium.

The year 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of Newnan’s Williams Insurance Agency. In 1962, company founder C.J. Williams relocated to Newnan to sell life insurance through Life and Casualty. By 1972, the rented office space above Lee-King Pharmacy became too small, and Mr. Williams relocated to Temple Ave. where it remains today.
The insurance business has always been a family affair in the Williams clan. Two of the sons, Tim Williams, and the late Terry Williams, joined their dad to help make this business venture even more successful. In 1980, Robin’s mother, Linda Dukes, married C.J. Williams and became an integral part of the business until her retirement. Robin McGuffey joined the agency in 1986 and began purchasing ownership in the busi-ness in 2003. “My step father taught me everything he knew about the insurance business”, say’s Robin, “but he continued to be the ‘man in charge’”. Mr. C.J. was a major input into the workings or the agency until his death in 2011.

Exterior Paint ColorsThe exterior walls are one of the most important features of any home because it’s the first thing that someone sees when they visit or pass by your house. Many home owners are remodeling their homes with a fresh coat of paint, but often have difficulty deciding on a color or a combination of colors to use. Es-pecially if there is a possibility that you may need to sell the house in the near future.
Before running to the paint store to choose a color consider the style of your home and what is traditionally being used on that style. Look for similar homes and take inspiration from them to help with the decision. Also, consider the other homes in your neighborhood. It’s advisable to choose colors that are compatible with them. If you live in a subdivision you may need to check with your Home Owners Association (HOA) to see if there are restrictions & covenants concerning exterior paint choic-es.
Choosing colors that coordinate with the fixed assets of the home that can’t be changed such as the roof, siding material such as brick, stone, etc. is important as well.
Decide on the main house color first (if it’s to be painted). Experts advise to try a few different shades of the color that you want on a small portion of the house to see how it looks. It’s difficult to decide from a small chip on a paint strip and most paint brands sell small sample sizes for this purpose. Af-ter your color choice has been final-
ized, then choose the trim and accent colors.

#2 Tan - Can be Beige or Taupe
#3 Gray - Another classic choice
#4 Yellow - Soft Corn Silk, Classical Yellow or

Most paint companies have an exterior paint guide that you can use to help decide on a color scheme. Then the only thing to decide after this is are you going to DIY (do it yourself) or hire a contractor. I know which way I’d go!

Keeping Your Pet Safe This Holiday
As we move into the peak of the holiday sea-son, it’s more important than ever to make sure your pets are safe, stress-free and healthy. Here are a few tips to help your pets have a happy holiday:
Avoid using decorations like tinsel, which •can be ingested by cats and puppies at-tracted to its shine and crinkly sound. Hang small ornaments and glass balls high on the tree and place larger, sturdier ornaments on the lower part.Cover electrical cords and light strands to •prevent pets from chewing on them. A piece of PVC pipe or a thick piece of spare carpet, or even duct tape, can cover exposed runs along or behind the tree.Before a party or large get-together, create a safe haven for your pets in a room closed off from •the rest of the house. Put their bed and blankets, toys, water and food in there, and check on them regularly.Makesurecandiesandchocolatesstayoffthefloorsothatpetscan’tingestthem.Chocolate•is poisonous to dogs.Use toddler gates to keep your pets out of areas like the kitchen, so they don’t get into holiday •baking.Make sure to keep pets on a regular feeding, walking and play schedule. Happy Tails Pet Sa-lon has a new manager and groomer. Shelly Daws and her family have always been animal people and she especially loves dogs. In the spring of 2008, Shelly took grooming classes from Happy Tail’s original owner, Judy Hortman and has worked for Petco in Peachtree City. “Some dogs have anxiety attacks when being groomed”, says Shelly. “I like to work with those spe-cial needs dogs to make their visit a pleasant one”. Newnan Coweta Humane Society announces Pet Food Pantry
The Newnan-Coweta Humane Society is pleased to announce an-other new program to assist needy pet parents in Coweta County. During these difficult economic times, some families are facing the choice between feeding themselves and taking care of loved ones. This choice is made by parents of low-income families every day and many times involves the family pet. “Local shelters and animal rescues are experiencing an increase in owner relinquish-ments of family pets due to the family’s inability to afford pet food and pet care for their beloved four-legged family members” reports LouAnn Jones, President, Newnan Coweta Humane Society. Giv-ing up a family pet to make sure it is has food and is healthy is a very traumatic experience for both the humans AND the animal. Fortunately, many families will no longer be required to make the choice to feed themselves or their pets. The Newnan Coweta Pet Food Pantry will provide temporary food assistance to pet owners who are currently unable to afford food for their pets and may be forced to give up their pets without food assistance.
The NCHS Pet Food Pantry will be an ongoing program and monthly distributions will occur on the 1st Saturday of each month. Qualified program recipients can receive a one month supply for up to three pets. All pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on Rabies. If not fixed or current on Rabies, NCHS can provide assistance at no cost to qualified Coweta residents. The next scheduled food distribution will be on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the HELP Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Crescent, Newnan, GA from 9am-12noon. Residents needing assistance with feeding their pets will need to complete an application for the program. Residents must bring a picture ID, and proof of income in order to qualify for assistance. Forms can be picked up in advance at the HELP Clinic, or by emailing NCHS at [email protected].
NCHS will gladly accept donations of Dog or Puppy Food (dry or canned), Cat or Kitten Food (dry or canned), Stainless Steel Bowls (please no plastic or ceramic), Kitty Litter, Nylon adjust-able dog collars and leashes at the following locations: NCHS Adoption Events (to a NCHS Volunteer) at Newnan PetSmart on Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30; All-Star Mini Storage, 8 Newnan South Industrial (off Hwy 29 South); H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Crescent (in Avery Park off Hwy 29 North).

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m very excited, because we adopted a puppy this week! Do you have any advice for a new pet owner? -- James C., Dallas
DEAR JAMES: Congratulations! I recently mentioned to the new owner of a cat that it’s important to schedule an appointment with the vet-erinarian as soon as possible to make sure it is healthy, and to get its vaccinations.
Once that’s done, pick up a few books on training and caring for your new dog. But with the new year, I want you to make some new resolu-tions that will last beyond just this year and the next:
I will recognize that my pet is a “forever pet.”•
I will not abandon my pet when the novelty of being a pet owner • wears off.
I will not discard my pet when house training gets tough, or when it • starts chewing up my shoes.
I will take my pet for a regular annual checkup and keep its vaccina-• tions and licensing up to date.
I pledge to spend time with my pet every day.•
I will teach my family to respect animals, to have compassion for • them and to care for them as they would another family member.
I will train my dog to respond to basic commands, and I will social-• ize it with other dogs so that it is better behaved in public or at dog parks.
These are just a few of the resolutions you should make regarding your new pet. You’ll probably come up with even more on your own. What-ever the case, appreciate that your pet is a part of the family for the rest of its life.
