Being a native of Coweta County, I used to think of our commu-nity as either a laid back small town or a fast growing city with its growth and traffic problems. I now understand its much more than that. Coweta is becoming an ideal place to live, work and enjoy a good quality of life. It really does have a lot to offer not available in other areas.

Our community now seems to be an ideal mix of city life, with its shopping, dining and recreational opportunities, along with sleepy lit-tle rural pockets of life the way it was. There are small counties in rural

areas which are alluring for their relaxed life style, but have no oppor-tunities for major shopping, dining, etc. Then there are the big cities with more than enough places to part with your money and meet most of your needs. Coweta, however, has a unique blend of big town opportunities along with small town attitude.

Think about it. We have several excel-lent golf courses, the new Chattahoochee Bend state park, Dunaway Gardens, a relatively new fair grounds and a location for the Powers Crossroads Festival. There are several civic clubs just waiting for your membership and involvement. Edu-cational opportunities include West Geor-gia College, Brewton Parker College, West Georgia Technical College and our Central Educational Center, with more on the way. Our school system includes well run pub-lic and private facilities. More than a hun-dred churches offer varied styles of worship. You can see a play at the Newnan Community Theatre Company, attend a concert at the awesome Centre for the Performing Arts or hear a local jazz band at the historic Wadsworth Auditorium. There are places to eat, from fine dining to great tasting burgers and dogs. You can see most any current movie, buy a car, or shop for just about anything and everything you need or want without leaving the county. We have very good medical facilities with more on the way, and our excellent daily newspa-per keeps us informed.

But thats not all. Where else can you find all these things and still see a farmer cutting his hay field or feeding the cattle? In Turin, there is a good old fashion Tractor Pull and show every year. Local farmers wearing old jeans or overalls bring their tractors directly from the barn or field to participate. (Dont let those overalls fool you. Many of these people can buy and sell me ten times!) Rural churches still have Homecoming and dinner on the grounds. And you can sometimes still see laundry drying on the line behind a house. Kids (and adults) play softball and there are always a few guys at a country store standing around the back of a pick up truck talking about fishing or hunting. (Actually, there is usually noth-ing in the truck its just something to lean on!)

So, theres something for just about all of us living in Coweta County to keep us informed, supplied, involved, connected and just plain happy. I really enjoy living here and I bet you do, too. From now on, Ill be calling it Coweta: the County of Opportunity

JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

    Questions About Shingles Vaccine

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 59-year-old female who had a severe case of chickenpox as a child. It has been rec-ommended that I get a shingles vaccina-tion after my 60th birthday.

However, my husband never had chickenpox, and I have a 1-month-old granddaughter. Are my husband and

granddaughter at risk for becoming infected when I get the vaccine? -- J.Z.

ANSWER: The shingles vaccine Zostavax contains live but weakened virus. Transmission of the vaccine virus from someone who just received it is theo-retically possible, but actually is a rare event. Your husbands chances of catching the vaccine virus are close to zero.

Although your husband says he never had chickenpox, 99 percent of adults bear evidence in their blood that they did have childhood chickenpox. Many of these people have no recollection of being sick. That might be because the infection was so mild that they never knew they were infected. Furthermore, all adults, whether they remember they had chickenpox or not, are urged to have the vaccine after their 60th birthday. Your husband can get the shot along with you.

As far as your 1-month-old grandchild goes, her chance of catching the vi-rus from a recently immunized person is small. However, you can eliminate the risk completely by waiting to have your immunization until your grand-daughter gets her chickenpox immunization at 12 months; you dont have to be immunized on the day you turn 60. Or you can be immunized before your granddaughter gets her chickenpox vaccine, and then wait to hold her and care for her for two or three weeks after you have the shot.

Shingles is the bane of older people. The booklet on this illness describes it in detail and how it is treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipients printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

    ***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78-year-old woman with a torn rotator cuff and arthritis in my left shoulder. My doctor says nothing can be done short of a complete shoulder replacement. Is this true? Should I get a second opin-ion? -- E.W.

ANSWER: The rotator cuff is a cuff (much like shirt cuff) of four tendons that arise from four back muscles. Those tendons swing around the shoul-der joint to hold it in place. Small rotator-cuff tears heal on their own. Large tears require surgical correction. Some tears call for shoulder joint replace-ment, especially when the joint itself is arthritic.

More than 23,000 Americans will have their shoulder joints replaced this year. Almost all will have gratifying results. Theyll be able to move their shoulder without pain. The shoulder has an excellent blood supply, so heal-ing this joint is much faster than healing a knee or hip replacement. Fur-thermore, the shoulder, unlike the knee or hip, doesnt have to support body weight, another point in its favor.

A second opinion is always worthwhile. If the second doctor agrees that you need a new joint, I say go for it.

    ***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Most successful businesses have one or two key employees who make doing business with them a special pleasure. Personal Banker, Rachel Hood enjoys that reputation at The Bank of Cowetas main branch in Newnan. Her job is to welcome new customers with help in opening accounts, and assist and help solve problems for both new and existing bank customers.

I enjoy meeting new people and helping my regular customers on a daily basis, says Rachel. She has been with Bank of Coweta for 18 years, but has about 40 years experience in banking.

Rachel is married to Joey Hood, who works as an electrician for the county school system. She has two stepsons, four grandchildren and a great nephew. They are the joy of my life. They are members of the East Newnan Baptist Church where Rachel has attended since childhood. Her hobbies include cooking, gardening, and making baby quilts. Joey and she are also big NASCAR fans!

Publishers note: I have depended on Rachel Hood for many years for my banking needs. She is always willing and able to help me transfer funds, open or close an account or just tell me if I have any money left to transfer! When my granddaughter, Anna, needs her money transferred for college tuition, we say, Well have to talk with Rachel about that. She is truly a pleasure to work

with, as are the other friendly employees at the Bank of Coweta.

Replacing and UpdatingI know my carpet, countertops and fixtures are dated and need replacing, but Ill just give the buyer credit for that. Anyway, how do I know that I will be making the right replacement choices for the next owner?

Back in the good ole days, when real estate was selling like hot cakes, all that was required to attract a buyer was to have a clean and neat house. To say that real estate has changed over the last 4 years is an understate-ment. Now, were all talking about staging and updating our houses in order to get them sold. As a seller, its difficult to wrap ones head around the fact that you may have to spend some money in order to sell your property. Youre seeing dollars signs being subtracted from your bottom line.

If you are thinking this what do you think a buyer is thinking? If they see that light fixtures, carpet, etc. need to be replaced, all they see are dollar signs rolling around in their head.

By the time a buyer has paid the down payment, closing cost and moving expenses, there usually isnt any money left to spend on updating a prop-erty. However, the house down the street has a similar plan and its already been updated let buy that one! We can move right in!

The days of Ill just give them credit for the updates are over. If you CAN find a buyer that is willing to make the changes, they are usually looking for a good deal and will make a low ball offer to compensate for the expenses of updating. The offer will be much lower than it would have cost you to make the changes yourself. You lose!

As for making the correct replacement choices talk to your agent or have a staging consultation to get the advice needed to make the right choice. A home staging consultation is usually around $150 - $275. Why risk having your house sit on the market while other updated houses around you are selling?

For more information on updating your property, contact

Nan Johnston, Southern. Staging & Redesign,

    nan@ southern-staging.com

To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the dry-wall. You also can wad up a piece of alumi-num foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the com-pound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up

    instead of fall down.

I recently did a little work on my car, and afterward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage. -- A Reader, via email

Add a fabric-softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. You also can use a cotton ball scented with your favorite essential oil or even perfume.

If you have trouble threading needles, try spritzing some hairspray on your finger, and twist the end of the thread. It will keep the fibers together and stiffen it enough to be easily threaded.

Its still possible to save a bit of money on car maintenance if you cant change your own oil. Learn common add-ons that you will be offered at oil-and-lube places. Air filters are surprisingly easy to replace on your own, and so are windshield wipers. Very often, the staff of auto-supply chains will lend you tools or even assist you right in the parking lot.

Got bug bites? Try these for some relief from the itching of insect bites: apple-cider vinegar; a paste of baking soda and water, allowed to dry on the bite; a similar paste of meat tenderizer and water; or antiperspirant.

HerbsSince earliest times herbs have been gathered from the wild and (later)

cultivated for use as food, medicine, cosmetics, dyes, insect repellents, and natural air fresheners and perfumes. Today herbs are widely used in cooking; for ornamental value; and enjoyed in wreaths, topiaries, and dried flower ar-rangements.

Herbs may be annuals (one growing season), biennials (two seasons), or perennials (more than two years growth). While some are best planted in Spring, many herbs may be planted or divided in the Fall. Garlic bulbs and shallots are planted in the Fall. Chives and tarragon may be divided in the Fall.

Autumn is the perfect time to prepare soil for herb gardening. Most herbs dont need too rich a soil or much fertilizer. They do like a neutral to slightly alkaline soil with excellent drainage. Compost, lime, wood ashes, crushed egg shells or blood meal or 5-10-5 fertilizer could be added to good garden soil and tilled in thoroughly. Water and wait to plant. Choose a sunny location with good air circulation. Protect plants from strong winds.

There are many ways to plant herbs. Raised beds are great! Many types of containers can be used including pots, boxes, troughs, wall planters, win-dow boxes and strawberry jars. Drainage is most important. Topiary forms are fun. In Winter plants can be grown outdoors under cloches or in a cold frame. In the house they can be grown on a window sill in a sunny Southern windowed room that is cooler. A greenhouse is, of course, the ultimate luxury for Winter.

Herbs can be propogated by sowing seeds (indoors or outside), transplant-ing, rooting cuttings, layering or mounding. Many herbs can be di-vided either in the Spring or in the Fall. Try to give them as close to their natural growing environment as possible.

Be aware that some herbs can be very invasive ~ such as catmint, all other mints, lemon balm, tarragon, and sweet woodruff. Separate them! Some herbs that are more tolerant of moister retentive heavy clay soils are garlic, all mints, chives, tarra-gon, fennel, sage, lemon balm, and cat mint.

    Master Gardeners Backyard Association Meets

Mr. Jim Rogers of Nearly Native Nursery will be the guest speaker at the Backyard Association meeting that will be held on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. Jim has been gardening and propagating native plants for over 30 years. Although he has some formal training in Botany and Landscape Design most of his knowledge is self taught through fieldwork, textbooks, and gardening. He has been involved in many plant rescues and reclamation projects and is very knowledgeable on the subject of native plant identifica-tion, species habitat, and propagation.

Jim owns and operates Nearly Native Nursery, a walk-in retail and mail order business in Fayetteville, Georgia that specializes in native trees, shrubs, palms, and perennials for low maintenance landscapes that will attract native wildlife. Jims love for educating has blossomed into a passion that is evident at Nearly Na-tive Nursery which has been a great outlet in which to reach more of the public that are interested in the ed-ucation and gardening with native plants.

The Native Oasis Botanical Garden is Jims latest ongoing project. This 1.5 acre garden is in the beginning stages and is fast becoming a home for specimen displays and experi-mental gardens. This is a small but intensely planted garden, as diverse as any garden in Georgia.

Jim also has had a passion for wild animals and keeps a few tropical par-rots and 20 or so native snakes which are all on display for public viewing and education. He shares this pas-sion with many sectors of the public, speaking to many school groups as well as Boy and Girl Scout organiza-tions, master gardener groups, na-tive plant groups and garden clubs throughout the Southeastern US.

Have you ever been to a National Park and wished your landscape looked like that? Get rid of your lawn and create your own interesting and drought tolerant landscape. That is what Jim is creating at their Native Oasis Botanical Garden and you can too.

Plan to join us on September 13th to learn how you can create your own national park in your yard.

The Backyard Association is an educational program sponsored by the Coweta County Extension Master Gardeners. The presentations are free to the public and are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building located at 275 Pine Road, Newnan. Please call the Extension Office at (770) 254-2620 for reservations and to register for door prizes.

Got Coin? It might be just the time to cash in. This week, starting Tuesday and continuing through Saturday, the International Collectors Association in conjunction with the Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery will be purchasing all types of silver and gold coins direct from the public. All types are welcome and the event is free.

Collectors will be on hand to identify and sort your coins. Then the quality or grade will be determined. The better the grade the more they are worth, according to collectors I talked to. With the silver and gold markets high, prices of older coins are too. Any coins minted before 1965 in the U.S. are 90% silver, except nickels and pennies.

The coins worth is determined by the rarity and the grade. Old silver dollars are worth a great premium right now, even well worn heavily circulated ones are bringing good premiums. Franklin and Kennedy half dollars, Washington quarters, Mercury and Roosevelt dimes are all worth many times the face value. While older types like Seated Liberty, Standing Liberties, and Barber coins are worth even more.

Gold coins are really worth a lot right now, according to Brian Eades of the International Collectors Association. This country didnt start minting coins until 1792 says Eades. He explained, Before that, people would trade goods using gold dust and nuggets. Some shop keepers would take more gold than needed to pay for items purchased. There was no uniform system of making change.

The government opened the first mints and began distributing the coins in 1792. By the beginning of the 19th century, coins and paper currency were wide spread and our monetary system was here to stay. In 1933 Roosevelt required all banking institutions to turn in all gold coins. Once all banks turned in this gold, the president raised the gold standard from $20.00 per ounce to $33.00 per ounce. This was his way of stimulating the economy during the great depression. However, gold coins were never redistributed after the recall. But not all gold coins were turned in. Many folks during that time didnt completely trust the government and chose to keep their gold said Eades.

These gold coins are sought after by collectors today and bring many times the face value. Any gold coins with the mint marks of CC, D or O will bring nice premiums. Collectors at the event will be glad to show you where to look. Other types of coins will also be purchased including foreign coins, Indian cents, two cent pieces, half dimes, three cent pieces and buffalo nickels to name a few.

Collectors warn people against trying to clean their coins, as significant damage can be done and the coins value lessened.
