Americans have been exchanging written to-

kens of their affections during what we call

Valentine’s Day for over two hundred years

– longer in Europe. It’s estimated that about a billion

cards, worldwide, are purchased each year. And that

doesn’t include flowers, diamonds, candy or candlelight

dinners. This infatuation for the opposite sex has be-

come big business.

As I remember, it all started for me about 1957 in Mrs. Brown’s 4th grade class at

the Atkinson School here in Newnan. The plan was for all the class members to tape

their “personalized, handmade card re-

ceptacle” (Paper bag) on the schoolroom

wall under the windows. We were to

sign our name to a store-bought card and

place it in each person’s bag with multiple

cards being awarded to those particularly

“pretty” or “handsome” students – all of

them. I, however, could gather little in-

terest in impressing the boys of the class

and made a “wholesale boycott” of their

bags. There was just something about

asking Danny Lovorne, Wallace Glover

(may he rest in peace), Alex Baggett, Lee

Moody or Earnest Sewell, to name just a

few, to “Be My Valentine”! And the feel-

ing was quite mutual, I’m sure.

But there was a smart, attractive little girl in our class by the name of Nadine Brooks.

She probably got multiple cards from several of the boys, including me, but one of

my cards must have “hit the spot” with her. I would never have dreamed that in the

year 2014, that little girl and I would celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary! And

how could I have predicted she would stand with me through good times and bad,

or that she would encourage me in my weaknesses and in my successes for 45 years;

or that she would forgive me for being the adventurer while she was the real stability

of our home and our two daughters – always being a giver but seldom a taker. I feel

somewhat like Winston Churchill as he said, “My most brilliant achievement was my ability persuade my wife to marry me”.

So this article is my public Valentine message to my wife, to be cut out and placed

in her paper bag, taped to the wall of our home.

Be My Valentine

After the holiday decorating gets packed up and put away for the next 10 ½ months, does your house feel cold and empty, almost like a vacant home. I know ours does, but I sort of like it that way for a while. I find that I’m ready for it and enjoy the breathing space.

This may be a good time to let your space breath a little while. Enjoy the empty walls, knick/knack shelves and table tops. Take a few days or weeks and take in the emptiness of it all.

Only bring back the items that are functional or that have special mean-ing to you and your family. Chances are the functional things are a humid-ifier/vaporizer and a basket full of cold & flu medicine, Kleenex boxes and extra throws for warmth. The special meaning items cold be a quilt that your grandmother made or a favorite photo of someone that puts a smile on your face. Just keep it simple for now and enjoy the breathing room.

After a few weeks, the decorative accessories start finding their way back in. A good way to keep the space from feeling cluttered is to bring back ½ of what you removed before the Holiday décor was installed … if you didn’t remove any accessories for holiday décor, remove ½ of your accessories and enjoy the new space you have just created. Those other accessories or possessions will creep back in soon enough and then your house will be back to normal, warm & fuzzy.

As I write this article, sitting in our family room (it’s January 19th)I can see at least 4 spaces that still have Christmas décor in place. I tell myself that it’s not Christmas décor …it’s Winter dé-cor! I guess I’m not as ready for that breathing space as I thought.

Mr. Tommy Alden of County Line Nursery will present “Camellias A to Z” Feb. 11 at the Coweta County Extension Office

on Pine RoadThe Coweta County MGEVs are pleased to announce

that Mr. Tommy Alden of County Line Nursery will present “Camellias A to Z” on February 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office.

Mr. Alden has had a life-long interest in camellias. At an early age he began helping his Dad make grafts from sci-ons obtained from Dave Strother’s col-lection at Massee Lane (later donated to the American Camellia Society for their headquarters). Following college and a twenty year career with agricultural and lawn & garden chemical companies, he began his own business of growing plants in 1986. Today this business, County Line Nursery, is known as the

south’s largest grower of Daphne odora but camellias are not far behind. At last count, County Line Nursery was producing over 200 different varieties of camellias in sizes from liners to 25 gallon containers. Tommy also maintains his own personal collection of camellias and his blooms can often be found at the head table at local camellia shows. Mr. Alden is Past President of the Middle Georgia Camellia Society and is currently Chairman of the American Camellia Society’s Massee Lane Garden Council. He is also an active Camellia show judge.

Mr. Alden will provide history; information about varieties and species, bloom times, landscape application, and planting and insect and disease problems. He will also have a question/answer session at the end of his presentation.

Please plan to join us on February 11th to learn all about camellias.

The Backyard Association is an educational program sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs). The presentations are free to the public and are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office, 255 Pine Road, Newnan. Please call the Exten-sion Office at (770) 254-2620 for reservations and to register for door prizes.

The saga of Winter Storm 2014 is in our rear-view mirror here in Coweta County.

First off, a job well done needs to be said for the leadership here in Coweta. The Coweta Public School Systems were proactive and really avoided some major headaches by calling off school last Tuesday morning. Other administrators - that we were aware of - did like-wise: The Heritage School, Carolyn Barron Montessori School, Odyssey School and Dawson Street Christian School. Roads began getting icy with freezing rain as early as 10:30 a.m. in neighboring Troup County.

A huge nightmare of transporting children home during a midday wintry mix was avoided by the school administrators here. That’s outstanding leadership and decision-making.

Next, a huge “thank you” should be extended to the Coweta County Road Crews, Emergency Personnel and Law Enforcement that worked tirelessly to make the roads as safe as possible. Not to say it was easy, but a job well done. And to all the Good Samaritans out there that offered assistance to those in need. It’s why many of us love to call Coweta County home.

Our neighbors to the north in Metro Atlanta learned some valuable lessons the hard way. Many innocent people and children were put in harm’s way due to some questionable decision-making there.

After growing up on the Mississippi coast, hurri-canes get your attention fast. When a Watch is called, you make plans to leave. When a Warning is issued, you are out the door. Hurricanes and Winter Storms are two different animals, but both need to be taken se-riously at the infancy stage when the National Weather Service issues Advisories. What makes it sting a bit more for Atlanta is both the National Weather Service and The Weather Channel in its backyard. Let’s hope they get it right next time.

NEw-LOOK wEBSITE

If you haven’t noticed in the past week or two, thecowetashopper.com has a new look. The web-site was relaunched with a completely different design and feel, featuring a dynamic mix of retail display ads, classifieds, timely news features and real-time traffic, weather and gas prices.

Coweta Noteworthy: Snow, new website, Pardue and the Super Bowl

By Joey Howard, The Coweta Shopper

And one of its most exciting attributes is the Respon-sive Design. It’s the new wave in websites and simply means the digital content conforms proportionately to any size viewing portal a reader is using – desktop, notebook, tablet, or smartphone.

The new-look website allows The Coweta Shop-per another platform to offer to its advertisers and readers. Features include regular columnists and their contributions, the print edition in an E-Edition format, categorized ads for easy searchability, and the oppor-tunity for readers to place their own free and/or paid advertisements - anytime, 24/7.

Real-time tools on the website such as GDOT 511, GasBuddy.com, and AccuWeather gives readers up-to-the-minute details on gas prices in Coweta County, traffic in Coweta and Metro Atlanta, and weather info with short-and-long-range forecasts and live radars on AccuWeather.com.

Take a look at thecowetashopper.com again. We think you’ll like it.

PARDUE HEAD COACH AT EAST COwETA

Another great decision the Coweta County Public School System made last week, just ahead of the Win-ter Storm, was announcing the hiring of Steve Pardue as head football coach at East Coweta High School. Pardue replaces Clint Wade at ECHS.

Pardue is known around these parts for his success-ful run at LaGrange High School from 1994 to 2010. In his 17 seasons as head coach at LaGrange, he led the Grangers to a 161-45 record and three, AAA state championships.

He spent 2011 and 2012 as running backs coach at the University of Kentucky, before getting back into the prep ranks.

SUPER BOwL COMMERCIALS

And speaking of football, many of you probably watched the Super Bowl on Sunday. It was certainly a dominating performance by the Seattle Seahawks in capturing their first championship, whipping the Den-ver Broncos 43-8.

But did you see the commercials? Most were tame, which is unusual for the Super Bowl. All told, 50 com-mercials were slotted into 30-second intervals during the FOX Telecast at a cost of $4 million each.

Early Monday, the USA TODAY 2014 Super Bowl Ad Meter listed its top three commercials and I’d prob-ably have to agree.

The No. 1 spot was the Budweiser “Puppy Love” commercial. It was about an adopted puppy that wasn’t going to be denied to be with the Clydesdale horse it loved.

No. 2 was a Doritos bit where a kid - dressed as a cowboy/cowgirl - rides a big dog and lassos a bag of chips.

And No. 3 was another Anheuser-Busch commercial featuring a town’s welcome-home parade for a soldier coming back from Afghanistan.

Encouraging Words

Marriage“To keep your marriage

brimming in the Wedding Cup,

whenever you’re wrong, admit it;

whenever you’re right, shut up.”

~ Ogden Nash

Q“Love at first site is easy to understand.

It’s when two people have been looking

at each other for a lifetime

that it becomes a miracle.”

~ Sam Levensen

Q“There is no greater happiness for a man

than, approaching a door at the end of the

day, knowing someone on the other side of

that door is waiting for

the sound of his footsteps.”

~ Ronald Reagan

Q“When there is love in a marriage

there is harmony in the home;

when there is harmony in the home,

there is contentment in the community;

in the community, there is prosperity

in the nation; when there is prosperity

in the nation, there is peace in the world.”

~ Chinese Proverb

our children is to give visible example

As they grow up, they may then look

too can find such love.”

~ Eucharista Ward

from parents, but a prudent wife

is a blessing from the Lord.”

Keeping the Traditions of American Business women’s Association

By Charlene Sibaja The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), found-ed in 1949, by Hilary A. Bufton Jr., of Kansas City, Mo, continues to thrive. Today ABWA consists of thousands of members, pro-viding business training and networking opportunities for wom-en of diverse occupations and backgrounds. ABWA has dedicated more than half a century to women’s education and providing workplace skills and career development training for more than 545,000 members. tribution to the 2014 impact scholarship. The impact scholarship is funded through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund to a deserving area female student. Each year McIntosh Charter Chapters provides Stephen Bufton Memorial Scholarships (SBMEF) to a student who will attend an accredited U.S. college or university.
