Thursday, March 17 ~ St. Patrick’s Day

His wife had been killed in an accident and the police were questioning Finnegan.

“Did she say anything before she died?” asked the sergeant.

“She spoke without interruption for about forty years,” said the Irishman.

A young gentleman sitting at a bar with his pet pig asks for a couple of drinks.

The confused bartender said no animals were allowed at the bar. The man proceeded to say “Ah, but this is a very special pig. Just last week there was a fire in the house and that pig

came charging out of his pen into the house and woke us all up. Then a few days later my son fell into the pool and that pig was grazing out on the lawn, and he came running and jumped into the

pool and saved my son.”“Well” said the bartender “I guess this pig is

very special so I’ll get him a drink. By the way I noticed that he is missing one leg,

what happened?”“Well” said the young man, “when you got a pig

this good you don’t eat him all at once !”

“Irish Last Request”

Mary Clancy goes up to Father O’Grady after his Sunday morning service,

and she’s in tears.

He says, “So what’s bothering you, Mary my dear?”

She says, “Oh, Father, I’ve got terrible news. Me husband passed away last night.”

The priest says, “Oh, Mary, that’s terrible. Tell me, did he have any last requests?”

She says, “That he did, Father…”

The priest says, “What did he ask, Mary?”

She says, “He said, “Please Mary, put down that gun.”

The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

The month of March marks the end of my first year at the helm of The Coweta Shopper. Our purpose is to connect the citizens of Coweta with

the products and services available here, and to do that in an interesting and informative way. We have received many positive comments from our readers, and our ad-vertisers are getting good results. I believe, however, that we have an opportunity to make the Shopper one of the most popular and effective publications in our

community in 2011 and beyond. In order to do this, we are asking for help from our readers as to what you would like to see and read.

Our plans for this year are to add inter-esting and informative articles about lo-cal business owners and employees, and features about gardening, home improve-ment, insurance and finance. We may also publish book reviews and movie sched-ules. Now that the economy is improving, our Homes and Land real estate section will grow. We may continue the What’s in Your Garage articles and the popular Le-gal Briefs column. The Armchair Garden-er, written locally, has been very popular and especially informative for plant lovers, and we hope Nan Johnston will continue her very popular articles on home decorating. And, as always, our Classified section will run employment opportunities and lost pets at no charge.

We have a lot of ideas which could make the Shopper a great pub-lication, but what we really need is your opinion. Let us know what you like, or don’t like, about what we are doing. Tell us what you want to see. Maybe you have an idea we haven’t thought about. Perhaps you would like to see crossword puzzles, a money saving coupon page or announcements about community activities. And, by all means, let me know what you think about the Publishers Page. (We can accept criti-cism as well as praise!) You can talk with us today, via the internet at [email protected], or mail your comments to us at P.O. Box 757, Newnan, Ga. 30264.

Thanks again to the 47,774 homes and businesses which receive The Coweta Shopper. With your interest and readership, this publication (your publication) can continue to grow and prosper in 2011 and beyond. And please remember to tell our advertisers you “Saw it in the Shop-per!”

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

• Check your local newspaper or city/county government for programs

that provide free or near-free water barrels. Many areas have a pro-

gram, and they really do help keep your water costs down if you have

flowers or vegetable gardens.

• To keep the edges of lettuce from browning, tear it or use a plastic

knife sold just for this purpose. Metal will make the edges brown.

• “If you want same-size cookies, roll and freeze your dough for 10-

15 minutes. Most doughs will harden enough to slice into perfectly

uniform slices, and the freezing doesn’t really affect cooking time too

much. (Watch your first batch, though.)” -- R.L. in Missouri

2011 Charles Wadsworth & Friends Concert Set for March 19th

The date is set! Newnan’s native son and world-famous pianist Charles Wad-sworth will return to Newnan to perform in concert in his namesake Charles Wadsworth Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Wad-sworth will once again be joined by a group of world-class musicians as they present the much anticipated “Charles Wadsworth & Friends” concert that has become Newnan’s most prominent cultural event.

Wadsworth grew up in Newnan and became an accomplished pianist at an early age and, by age 13, was filling in as the substitute pianist and organist at local churches. He went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from famed Julliard School and moved to New York in 1952 to begin his professional career. In New York, he founded the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 1969, leading it as Artistic Director and pianist for twenty years and bringing chamber music the unprecedented popularity that it en-joys today. His innovative programming and the varied repertoire he un-earthed have inspired a new generation of virtuoso musicians to perform chamber music, fostering the creation of chamber music festivals worldwide. Since l977, Wadsworth has been one of the Artistic Directors of the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, where he is pianist and host of the daily chamber music concerts. Similar concerts were created in 1960 at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.

Mr. Wadsworth celebrated his 80th birthday during Newnan’s 2009 concert and, since announcing his retirement at last year’s concert, has limited his concert appearances. He pledged, however, to return annually to Newnan for as long as “providentially able.” He has received New York City’s highest cultural award the Handel Medallion, in addition to South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of South Carolina, Converse College, and Connecticut College and has been invited

to perform at the White House for Presidents Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Cart-er, and Reagan. His many honors include being a 2009 recipient of Coweta County’s Centre for Performing & Visual Arts’ Richard Brooks Visionary Award of Distinction and also having had an alley in Newnan designated as “Wadsworth Alley.”

Charles Wadsworth has been returning annually to Newnan with his Charles Wadsworth & Friends Concerts since 1990. Originally sponsored by a group of local citizens and, more recently, by the City of Newnan’s Cultural Arts Commission, the concert has generated funds used to restore the city’s au-ditorium named after Wadsworth in 1998. It continues today supporting the ongoing upkeep and improvement of this treasured hall. Concert pro-ceeds have also made possible a series of Master Classes in which the visiting artists share their talents and personal experiences with groups of Coweta County students. With the strong support of the Newnan City Council and a large number of loyal patrons, the restoration of the auditorium was com-pleted in 2008.

General seating adult tickets are $20 and Senior/Student tickets are $15.

Shrubs

The ArmchairGardener

Who wouldn’t appreciate having a minimum maintenance land-

scape? Which plants can provide this while performing a wide variety

of uses? Shrubs are the perfect solution. They can offer flowers, berries,

fruits, showy fall colors, fragrance and texture.

Shrubs can be used in many ways. It’s a matter of choosing the right

shrubs for the right place. They can control erosion, defuse light, pro-

vide shade, offer privacy, muffle noise, screen unsightly views, define

spaces, direct foot traffic, serve as a wind break, create a background

for perennials and annuals., as well as many other useful functions.

Choosing the best shrubs for your own landscape doesn’t have to be

confusing. Consider these several factors when you are deciding which

shrubs to select: is it hardy in your area?; will it grow well in your type

of soil?; what is its mature height and width?; how much sun or shade

does it require?; does it fit into your landscape plan?; how much water,

fertilization, and pruning is required? The most important consider-

ation of all is — do you like this plant — because there are multiple

choices for the same need.

Flowering shrubs are a great solution for gardeners who no longer

have the physical abilities

to do lots of yard work.

They are also excellent

for the home owner who

loves flowers but has very

little space to garden.

Busy, younger adults ap-

preciate combining land-

scaping with shrubs and

having flowers, fruits and

berries to add beauty and bring inside the home to decorate.

Some examples of these are: blooms - azaleas, camellias, hydran-

gas, rhododendrons, roses, forsythia, hibiscus, philadelphus, flower-

ing quince, viburnum; fragrance - tea olive, gardenia, daphne, laven-

der, rosemary, osmanthus, lilac, banana shrub, Carolina all spice also

known as sweetshrub; fruits - crabapple, blueberry, cranberry, pome-

granate, quince, rose hips; berries - viburnum, callicarpa, holly, pyra-

cantha, mahonia, nandina, cotoneaster; varigated leaves - some variet-

ies of holly, osmanthus, daphne, acuba, eleagnus, gardenia, eyonymus,

yucca, boxwood, pittosporum.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Paul G. Donohue,

M.D.

The Main Causes of Constipation

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What brings on severe constipation? My movements are six to eight days apart. The doctor says milk of magnesia is no good. I am 85. Any help? -- C.Y.

ANSWER: A diet too low in fiber, not drinking enough fluids and lack of physical activity are the main ingredients for constipation. Sometimes, pre-scribed medicines are at fault.

Fiber is the indigestible part of foods. It holds on to water as food pass-es through the intestinal tract, and keeps the food residue moist and soft. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are fiber sources. “Whole grains” mean the grains haven’t been refined. They still have their outer coat, the bran. You can find many whole-grain breads and cereals. One cereal is All-Bran. It’s not the only one. If you can’t get enough fiber in foods, then turn to such things as Metamucil, FiberCon or Citrucel. You’ll find them in every drug-store.

Older people often drink less fluid than they need. Their thirst sensation isn’t as strong as it once was. Make sure you’re taking in enough liquids. Water isn’t the only liquid that keeps you hydrated.

After breakfast, take a walk. Physical activity stimulates the digestive tract to move food through it more quickly. That also keeps undigested food moist and soft. Take more walks throughout the day.

Doctors used to be quite reluctant to suggest laxatives to their patients. They were afraid that patients would get into the “laxative habit” or that the colon would become dependent on laxatives. Neither of these things hap-pens. No single laxative works for all. You have to find one that suits you. I don’t know why your doctor is down on milk of magnesia. It works for many. If it’s not working for you, try Miralax. Follow its directions for use. Once you have established a regular pattern to your movements, you can back away from laxatives so you’re not headed in the di-rection of too many evacuations. Stay on the regi-men of fiber, fluids and activity.

The booklet on constipation provides other tips on how to combat this all-but-universal problem. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 504W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for de-livery.

***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his col-umn whenever possible. Readers may write him or re-quest an order form of available health newsletters at

P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Nan Johnston The weather is warming up and I keep hearing that real estate sales are picking up. Making a great first impression is imperative in having a faster sale for

top dollar. Below are my top 10 exterior selling tips to help anyone, whether

their house is on the market or not.

❶ Walk outside and enter through your front

door. Most home owners don’t use their front entrance on a regular basis, they use their

garage entrance, so it’s easy to forget about the

appearance of the front of the house.

❷Sweep down any cobwebs, dust, pollen, etc.

❸Check your door bell button.

You wouldn’t believe how many homes I see

that have a broken button and the owner doesn’t know it.

❹Replace your welcome mat with a fresh one

and add some fresh cushions to your swing, rockers or chairs.

❺Pressure wash and paint any unsightly siding or trim work.

If a buyer sees that the outside has not been maintained, they will

automatically start wondering what else hasn’t been maintained.

❻Pressure wash the driveway, side walk and front steps.

❼Replace tired shrubs, flowers and landscaping mulch.

Remove any pots with dead plants and flowers.

❽Remove any of the “decorative” items in the flower beds and yard.

These are personal items and a buyer needs to be able to imagine

themselves building a life in that yard.

❾Clean the windows. It’s the best way to let in natural light.

Remember that a buyer spends several minutes looking around

the front entrance while an agent is trying to get the mls key

out of the lockbox. They will start forming opinions immediately

and if you’re selling, you want those opinions to be positive.

Newnan, GA 30263Monday through Friday - 7:30am to 5:00pm,

Saturday, Sunday Closed. Surgeries by appointment only.

Newnan-Coweta Hu-mane Society and The H.E.L.P. Spay/Neuter Clinic were able to team up to assist an elderly woman with her feral cat colony on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Su-sanne Fanelli, Domin-ick Fanelli and Janette Higgins, of the Newnan-Coweta Humane So-ciety, along with Cindy Leopard, Transport Coordinator for The H.E.L.P. Spay/Neuter Clinic were able to trap 13 cats from a home in western Coweta County. The cats were transported to The H.E.L.P. Spay/Neuter Clinic via The Snip Ship, where they underwent surgery and received their rabies and feline distemper vaccinations. As part of the Trap/Neuter/Release program, each cat was trapped, spay/neutered, had their ear tipped so that it will be easy to identify which cats have already been treated and will then be re-leased back at the owner’s home. The owner will continue to work with both NCHS and H.E.L.P. to spay/neuter her remaining twenty cats.

The Snip Ship is yet another service offered by H.E.L.P., providing free transportation to surrounding counties. H.E.L.P. is currently serving Fay-ette, Heard, Meriwether, Pike and Spalding Counties. Residents of these counties can call the office (770.304.7911) to schedule their appointment. Mrs. Leopard coordinates a scheduled route to each of the counties and is always looking to expand the service area. With a minimum of ten pets, the Snip Ship could comfortably hold about forty animals. Each pet is securely within an individual crate, and cats are separated from dogs as much as pos-sible.

If you would like to volunteer with either Newnan-Coweta Humane Soci-ety or The H.E.L.P. Spay/Neuter Clinic, or if you would like to make a dona-tion to either organization, please visit their respective websites for more information.

console? Implement the same disci-pline for failure to take care of Jess.Do you maintain a chore chart for the kids? Add dog walks, training, feeding and other tasks to the chart, with the same reward/punishment system as for the other chores.

To help your kids get into the hab-it of caring for Jess regularly, join them for the first week or two as they complete their assigned task -- not lecturing, just helping. Go with them on walks with Jess, but make sure they hold the leash. Guide them when they’re teaching Jess basic commands, but have them do the training. Get them into the habit of taking care of their dog.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Kids Need to Care for Their Dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I got a dog, “Jess,” for my kids after they begged me for months. It was on the condi-tion that they take care of her, take her for walks, train her, etc. But I am always the one taking her for walks, trying to train her, making sure she gets fed. How can I make these kids be responsible for their pet? -- Tam-my G., Tallahassee, Fla.

DEAR TAMMY: It sounds like you’re going to have to train the kids alongside the dog. I’m sure you’ve reminded them that they promised to be responsible for Jess, with no results. I’m no parenting expert, but it’s probably time to be a little stern-er with them.

What’s your normal disciplinary style for the kids when they break the rules? Do you send them to their rooms? Ground them? Or take away something they value for a period of time, like access to the video-game

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Throughout the years I have been asked what is the best way to find the right lawyer. This week’s article will briefly discuss some of the ways to find an attorney than can assist you.

As with any business, word of mouth is the best advertising. A personal recommendation from a family member or friend is a great place to start. Also seek out people who had similar attorney needs. It helps to find out who has done well for other people.

Another important thing to think about when picking an attorney is his or her specialty. Make sure you hire the lawyer you need. In other words, if you need a criminal defense lawyer don’t hire an estate lawyer even if it’s an old family friend (but they can be valuable in referring you to the right lawyer).

The Internet is also a valuable resource and can provide you helpful in-formation about the firms and attorneys in your area. Most attorney’s web sites discuss their area of practice, case results, and client testimonials. A few attorney’s web sites, including my firm, have video which lets you see and hear from the attorneys you are considering. Also, some web sites also have links that might provide you additional information for the type of answers you are seeking.

The phone book, while still a resource for phone numbers, does not provide as much depth as is found online. The phone book will also pro-vide you with attorney practice areas.

Once you’ve decided to meet with an attorney, ask if they have a free consultation. If you are prepared to meet with an attorney, have a clear idea of the questions you need to ask. Also, the attorney can advise you about the type of fee associated with your case. Fees differ for different types of legal matters. For example, a criminal case might have a fixed fee, a business problem might have an hourly fee with a retainer, and most personal injury cases would be on a contingency fee where a portion of the settlement or verdict, if received, would go to the attorney.

“So You Think You Can Sing” Karaoke Competition Hosted Bythe Coweta County 4-H Varsity

Mounted Drill Team

On April 2nd, the Coweta County 4-H Varsity Mounted Drill Team will be hosting the first “So you think you can SING” Karaoke compe-tition. The event will be at the Coweta County Fairgrounds (AG build-ing) at 275 Pine Road, Newnan, Georgia from 5:30 until 9:30p.m. There will be up to 50 contestants (ALL AGES) performing at $20 per performance (solo or duet). Contestants will pick their music out of a Karaoke songbook available one hour prior to performance. There are many selections in all genres available (current and oldie Goldie’s). Cash prizes will be awarded. Pre-registration forms are available at the Coweta Extension office or contact Tammy Ayers at [email protected]; 770-251-3733. Our goal is “Great Family Entertainment!” Admis-sion at the door will be $2 per person. Concessions will be served.

The Coweta County 4-H Mounted Drill Team has been competing for the past four years. The dedicated members of the team practice twice a week, year round. The teams complete all over Georgia three times a year. The team has won numerous awards and trophies. They have also been invited to attend a drill team competition in Texas. However, due to expenses, Texas is not an option this year. Fund rais-ers are necessary to help with the cost of these competitions. If you are ever near the Coweta County Fairgrounds on Sunday afternoons, drop by. You will most likely see the drill team hard at work. It is incredibly impressive to watch.

Economic Prosperity Award Winners Recognized

Vote March 15 to Extend E-SPLOST Funding for Schools

Candace Boothby, President Newnan-Coweta Chamber

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, I urge all eligible voters who care about this community to vote on the E-SPLOST referendum on March 15. And I am

strongly urging you to vote “YES” on this important action.

There are many excellent reasons to support E-SPLOST extension. It will NOT add another penny to our sales tax rate as some have erroneously believed. It will NOT be used for salaries or pensions. It will NOT raise property taxes in Coweta County.

But it WILL allow Coweta County to continue to outpace both the state of Georgia and the national SAT averages. It WILL allow for such progressive and valuable resources such as the Central Educational Center and the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, which are the envy of so many other counties.

What is truly impressive is that since 2003, thousands of new students have come to Coweta County. During the same period, the state of Georgia has cut over $55 million dollars of educational support funding to Coweta! Sadly, more cuts are coming. Yet during this same time period, Coweta has continued to outperform most other systems in Georgia without going into debt or laying-off teachers! This is an almost unbelievable achievement and speaks directly to both the financial and academic acumen of our system.

And we are going to continue to make sure that Coweta keeps its “edge of excellence” academically. We will not rest on our laurels nor allow our superior quality of life to erode because we didn’t support ourselves. The only question is how we will pay our way? It’s either through property taxes, a guaranteed 100 percent method of Coweta County taxpayers footing the entire bill or through extending our E-SPLOST sales tax method which will have non-Coweta residents paying approximately 30 percent. That is the choice and it’s ours to make on March 15.

Again, I urge you to make sure you show up and vote “YES” on March 15. We don’t want to lose this opportunity because we were too busy to go to the polls. This is too important.

Vote on the name for Coweta’s Young Professionals Group! Go to the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Facebook page to cast your vote by March 18.
