EIGHT LOSSStory by Joey Howard, The Coweta Shopper The remodeling project of the vacated Kmart building on Bullsboro Drive now has a new tenant attached to it. That tenant is Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, headquar-tered in Harrisburg, Pa. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet will be one of four stores the 32-year-old company is opening in Georgia in 2014. The Newnan location will be in the Kroger Shopping Center and located at 56 Bullsboro Drive, next to Aaron’s. Store hours will be Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. when the Newnan outlet opens in the early spring. Other Ollie’s Bargain Outlet openings in Georgia this year will be in Carrollton, Rome and Duluth. Ollie’s is one of America’s largest retailers, accord-ing to its website – olliesbargainoutlet.com – with 154 stores in 14 states. Generally, the stores range in size from 28,000 to 35,000 sq.ft. And the philosophy Ollie’s exudes is no frills, bargain prices, semi-lovely stores and a fun shopping environment. The product range features 19 merchandise catego-ries, including hardware, books and stationery, carpet, domestics, food, toys and seasonal goods. And Ollie’s cites its concept’s success due to a loyal customer base and tremendous growth, increasing from 17 stores in 1999 to its 154 total entering 2014. The Ollie’s website states customers will find lots of famous, brand-name goods in every department,
like housewares from Rubbermaid, Mirro, Ekco and Anchor Hocking, toys from Mattel, or sporting goods from Igloo. Its buyers look for closeouts, overstocks, package changes, manufacturer refurbs and irregu-lars. Ollie’s stores are designed in a warehouse format with bright colors and excellent lighting to promote a friendly shopping environment. Products are dis-played on pallets and moveable fixtures according to their product category and department. The company’s first store opened in 1982 at Mechanicsburg, Pa., and its second store later that year in Harrisburg. The mantra – “Good Stuff Cheap” – is still used today.

After 25 years of serving the readers and advertisers of our community – indeed, almost 1,300 weekly issues without fail, The Coweta Shopper has
the following announcement to make: We took a week off! And we loved it! Moreover, we’ll be “on holiday”, as the Britts say, for one week each quarter this year. And I suspect we’ll be taking these weeks off during the company’s next quarter of a century, too. (Or until I’m able to quit working, which-ever comes first!)
Our society is now well into a new era. Ideas and communication are moving fast – needs and interests are different from a decade ago. Savvy, successful businesses are using new ideas and technology to meet the requirements of a more sophisticated consumer. Will The Shopper be a part of this new mentality? You bet we will!
Beginning January 8, The Coweta Shopper will be mailed to 48,000 separate homes and businesses consisting of 4 weekly issues (12,000 each), scattered throughout the coun-ty. This will enable our loyal advertisers to reach a good sampling of our community each week and still focus on either east or west of I-85. We are also just about ready to launch our new web site, which will feature specials sales, money-saving coupons, a classified page and more. You’ll be able to see upcoming events and announcements on our community cal-endar as well as “how to” tips and special features on individuals and businesses in Coweta County. So, we will soon have the best of both – a traditional paper mailed directly to your home, as well as an exciting new website including Facebook and Twitter. And we will be our community’s only provider of this particular media combination.
So, our mission is simple – “To connect the citizens of Coweta with the best products and services offered here, and do so in an interesting, informative and encouraging way.”
Thank you, Coweta, for letting us serve you during this first 25 of our many years to come.
Joe
Post Script: My favorite is still our direct-mailed printed edition. After a complete read-ing, it can be used as a birdcage liner, a placemat or a window washer. You can also roll it up to “gently” spank children and pets, or to pretend you’re looking through a pirate’s tele-scope. Try doing that with the Internet!

Forgive Chris Stroud for the occasional golf analogy. After all, professional golf was his dream and passion. It all changed almost a year ago. Now, Stroud calls the Newnan-Coweta Habitat For
Humanity ReStore his new passion. He was named Store Manager last October.
“They tease me a lot,” Stroud says of his staff when he fires off a golf-ism. “I had made some huge changes (in the store). I said, well I’m trying to hit a hole-in-one here, I’m not trying to four-putt.”
Whether or not his staff got the analogy is up for de-bate. Not up for question is the desire Stroud has in making The ReStore a difference-maker in the Coweta County community.
Stroud was a Professional Golf Association member ... a PGA A1 Professional or as in layman’s terms a golf club’s pro.
“I was in the golf business and ran a pro shop that did $100,000 a year in sales,” Stroud recalls. “Ran a business with the golf and everything that did $1 mil-lion.”
Stroud had indeed spent much of the last six years at Durham Lakes Country Club in Fairburn and the Gov-ernors Towne Club in Acworth as their respective golf pro. It was at the Governors Towne Club where he got the call.
“It was a $50,000 initiation and $450 a month. It was high-end... probably too high-end,” Stroud said. “The owner called me on a Monday and said ‘Chris, the bank took over the property’.”
And just that quick, the golf career that Stroud had always dreamed of was gone.
The Newnan High graduate then found his way to the NCHFH ReStore.
“I never thought I’d be in a non-profit,” he said. “I’ve been very skeptical of non-profits in the past. But since I’ve been here, I’ve seen the books and I see where the money is going. It gives me more confidence and ap-preciation for the Habitat For Humanity because they

truly do put their money back where they say they do.”
Now it is Stroud’s job to take the Newnan store on Pine Road and grow it in sales and donations.
The one eye-opener for Stroud since his arrival at the ReStore - the always moving landscape.
“The way the store changes everyday, that’s been the biggest surprise,” Stroud said. “We get different donations, different volunteers and their needs and demands change on a daily basis. It’s just the daily diversity.”
“We get washers and dryers, Christmas ornaments, just about everything under the sun.”
Another surprise, the diversity of customers.“We have our treasure hunters that come here, and
those that simply can’t afford to go to Home Depot or Lowe’s,” Stroud said. “Then I’m blown away when you see all the Mercedes and BMWs that we get out here. People are just trying to find a diamond in the rough.”
Of course, the main mission of Newnan-Coweta Habitat For Humanity is to build homes for families dreaming of homeownership. Since its start in 1994, NCHFH has built 70-plus homes here in Coweta Coun-ty. And 100-percent of sales generated at The ReStore goes toward building homes where about $70,000 is needed for each home constructed.
So to increase sales, Stroud’s strategy is to go after donations.
“Absolutely, donations are where it’s at,” he said. “Without donations and good things in the store, it doesn’t matter how many customers we have. For this store to grow sales and donations, then where I need to go is after the business community here in Newnan and Coweta County. I firmly believe if we get qual-ity donations, customers will be here. I have no doubt. And I think our business community will support our store.”
One asset Stroud and the ReStore have at their dis-
posal is Jack Madliak, a bonafide repair technician.“Jack’s retired from the appliance industry and he
is phenomenal,” Stroud said. “He’s the reason we can offer a 90-day warranty on our appliances and they are generally half the price of retail. That’s pretty sol-id.”
“You know, when I first started here, the place looked like a flea market. I want it to be a store. I want The ReStore to be an option before someone goes to Home Depot or Lowe’s.”
And just to go full circle and back to the golf analogy, Stroud does have one hole-in-one to his credit. He says it was in 2001 at the Fairfield Plantation in Villa Rica. He aced a Par-3, 185-yard hole with a 6-iron.
But that is in the distant past. His mission is to fulfill dreams of families.
“I, myself, have only been to one house blessing,” he said. “It is absolutely amazing to give somebody the keys to a home.”
And certainly, NCHFH and the Coweta community hope more dreams of families become a reality.

“Conditioning Tips”
Take a clean container of fresh water to put fl owers in when cutting. Think about the size and shape and length
you need for your arrangement before you cut.
Prune shrubs carefully. Cut in the late evening or in the early morning — not at mid-day.
Avoid tender new growth as it is very diffi cult to condition.
Gently wash and clean the plant materials andremove damaged leaves and spent blooms.
Cut ends on a slant and place in a clean container of cool water for several hours or overnight. Don’t have any foliage below the water line.
Greenery can usually be completely submerged to soak — not grey or hairy leaves.
Break the ends of chrysanthemums.
Lightly burn the ends of poinsettias.
Boil the cut ends of hydrangeas a few seconds — then soak up to their necks.
Add fl oral preservative to the water according to directions (and soak the oasis in it too if using to arrange).
A tiny bit of bleach and a little sugar can be substituted — or a little listerine.

e members of the Joy Project would like to express their gratitude to the special volunteers and sponsors of our community that came forward and made Christmas 2013 a huge success. is year we were able to provide Christmas for over 500 children and elderly. Each person in need received a full Christmas. Children received toys, clothes, shoes, coats, etc. Elderly received household items, clothing, food, toiletries, etc. All items were new with tags and in original packaging. We could not have accomplished this huge blessing without the support of our generous sponsors. People in our county and beyond, have supported our organization for years and give sel essly to make sure oth-ers never go without. e Joy Project picks up new sponsors each year, which allows us to continue to be able to serve the growing needs of Coweta County.
