Pop-Corn Kernel

Last month, we asked for a volunteer to help lead the district’s popcorn efforts.

Thankfully, Tina Thuy-Hang Pham stepped up to volunteer her time and effort

for this much needed role.

Tina has also offered to help organize the Boy Scout breakout at the District

Roundtables.

When Tina reaches out to ask for your help with the popcorn or roundtable

efforts, please provide the assistance requested so that our district continues

to operate well.

THANK YOU TINA!!!

Recognizing the adult volunteers

Scouting would not be possible without the dedication and guidance from the many adult volunteers. As we

enter the second half of 2017, it is time to consider those outstanding individuals that help make your

scouting unit operate. Are you as leaders or as parents acknowledging the adults that provide that guidance,

leadership and inspiration for your children?

On November 4th, the Coyote Creek District will hold its annual recognition dinner to honor those adults that

have made significant contributions to scouting in our district.

Toward the back of this newsletter are two nomination forms. One form is for the TrailBlazer award, the

other is for the District Award of merit.

TrailBlazer Award

The TrailBlazer Award is to recognize scouters at the unit level. Every scout unit is eligible to have an adult

scouter receive a TrailBlazer award for each 25 youth registrations in a unit. A Scouter can receive multiple

TrailBlazer Awards over their tenure in scouting.

District Award of Merit

The District Award of Merit is awarded at the District Level. The number of District Award of Merit recipients

that a District can present is based on the number of units in the district. Our district can honor up to five

adults. This award is presented based on the individual’s contribution to the Coyote Creek District.

See the application forms located later in this newsletter

James E. West

Another way to honor your leaders is with the James E. West Award. The James E. West award is a way to

pay forward and honor the contributions of a deserving individual. To be eligible for the James E. West

Award, a $1000 minimum contribution is made to the foundation in a person’s name. The proceeds from the

foundation continue to help fund scouting activities in perpetuity.

To apply for the James E West award, a link to the application form is provided:

Outdoor Leader Skills (OLS) Training

You can't have "Scouting" without "Outing!" Trained Leaders lead to Better Outings! The best training for Outings is Outdoor Leader Skills.

This is a course for both leaders and parents! Join us from September 8-10, for a course that will provide you with the basic skills needed to start and guide a program the right way! (This course is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. It is also open to any interested adult.)

Emphasis of this course will be on how to teach the outdoor skills found in the Boy Scout Handbook.

And it's also a lot of FUN!

"Thank you for an (in the famous words of kung fu panda) awesome weekend!" - Spring OLS Participant

Outdoor Leader Skills Training (Continued)

Welcome to Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training, to be held at Camp Chesebrough in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We have a great staff and look forward to helping you to learn about Scouting outings. Check-in is from 6:30 – 7 PM on Friday, 9/8/2017. Please make every effort to be on time. We expect to finish up about 3:00 PM on Sunday, 9/10/2017.

Please bring a completed BSA Annual Health and Medical Record - Parts A, and B, # 680-001, 2014 Printing.

http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf

Please wear your Scout uniform, and bring rain gear and layers, as the weather may change rapidly in the Santa Cruz mountains (and it’s never the same as in the valley).

Please bring a mug and/or water bottle, Boy Scout Handbook and pen & paper. Please eat dinner before you arrive, or bring a “no-prep” meal with you. We will provide the ingredients, and you will prepare all your meals for Saturday and Sunday.

Location: The satellite picture (https://goo.gl/maps/Q5SVBjR6Prw) shows Sempervirens Point, a scenic overlook with parking and a restroom. The entrance to Camp Chesebrough is directly opposite this parking lot, on the north side of Hwy. 9. It will be a very sharp (SHARPER than 90 degrees) right turn for most of you traveling from the Santa Clara Valley. Slow down, and give following traffic plenty of notice. Please drive slowly and cautiously on the camp road. Please park facing out.

Council web page on Chesebrough, including how to get there: http://svmbc.org/svmbc/campproperties/chesebrough-scout-reservation/

Note: Do not rely on a street address in a GPS to get you there. (GPS units approximate addresses and can be miles off where cross streets are few and far between.)

Other: The Patrols (this means you) will be putting on a Campfire on Saturday. Bring some ideas/skits/songs/stories/run-ons, etc. to aid the process. Please let us know if you have

any physical limitations, special dietary or medical needs so we can Be Prepared before the course begins.

Emergency contact number at Camp Chesebrough: (408) 867-7610. (Note: this phone is not staffed full time. If it’s really an emergency, keep trying.) It’s gonna be a great couple of weekends. We hope you have fun and learn from your fellow participants, as well as from us.

Yours in Scouting,

Neal Osborn,

Course Director

---------------

You will be outdoors most of the time. Your campsites will be about 200 yards (uphill) from the parking area.

Overnight gear, outdoor essentials and appropriate clothing are the heart of camping equipment. Please refer to the Boy Scout Handbook, chapter 9, “Camping.”

You should bring:

• Appropriate foot wear - you’ll be outside on rocky, wooded, uneven, unpaved terrain

• Boy Scout Handbook

• Scout Uniform (wear)

• Notebook, pen

• Water bottle/canteen

• Personal First Aid Kit, suitable for hiking

• Tent (consider sharing if you know other participants)

• Sleeping Bag, pad

• Rain gear

• Jacket, gloves (including work gloves), hat

• Layers of clothing (to adjust to varying temperatures and varying levels of exertion) - It can get cold at Chesebrough!

• Pocket Knife

• Flashlight

• Compass

• Toiletries

• Scout Outdoor Essentials

• Personal eating ware - utensils, plate/bowl, cup (we provide the “cooking” ware)

• If you don’t have the appropriate equipment you may be able to borrow items from others in your unit.

• Optional Equipment

• You do not need to bring a stove.

• If you have a hand ax, please bring it and learn to sharpen it.

• Campfire skits & songs

• A backpack is not required, but may be helpful getting to and from your campsite.

• Handheld GPS/geocaching app for your phone

• Stave (staff) - http://inquiry.net/outdoor/skills/staff_use.htm (Staves are available at the Scout Shop. A thick broom handle works well, too. Finding the perfect one in the woods is always best, though. Don’t take without permission. Chesebrough is a great place to find the perfect one....)

Camporee

What Is a Camporee? A camporee is many things—camping fun for youth, the thumping of hundreds of feet on the way to an evening campfire, and the blue smoke from fires cooking stew or ham and eggs. It’s the patter of rain on many tents at night. It’s the ripple of wind-blown flags in the morning sun. It’s catching the idea of teamwork in a patrol. It’s learning to carry out an order to help the team succeed. A camporee can be a perfect showplace for the Scouting program and, therefore, go far beyond just being a gathering of boys. A camporee starts with the recognition that a patrol is the basic camping unit. The patrol demonstrates its very best camping techniques and shares its experiences with other patrols. The camporee involves the type of equipment that can be carried in a pack by boys and can be set up entirely by boys, allowing them to be completely self-sufficient for a self-reliant experience over a period of two or three days.

The Coyote Creek District Camporee will take place over the weekend of September 22nd -24th at

Camp Lehi in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The theme of this year’s Camporee is MayaIncaTec

(Mayan, Inca and Aztec Indians).

2017 Solar Eclipse:

How to earn the BSA 2017 Solar Eclipse patch 1. Locate a site suitable for viewing the eclipse. Search Google for “eclipse viewing” and the name of

your city or town to find events near you. ▪ See the exact path and precise timings at this NASA site.

2. Describe how to safely view the eclipse. ▪ Never look directly at the sun. Instead, look directly at these tips from NASA on how to view

the eclipse safely. 3. Discuss with your group what you saw and felt during the eclipse.

▪ Post your comments and eclipse photos on social media using the hashtag #BSAEclipse2017.

4. Do the following: ▪ Cub Scouts: Discuss what a solar eclipse is with your leaders. ▪ Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts: Draw a diagram of the positions of the moon, earth, and sun to

show how the solar eclipse occurs. ▪ Venturers: Research Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington’s 1919 experiment and discuss how it

confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity. 5. Ask your unit leader to buy the 2017 Solar Eclipse patch.

▪ You’ll find it at your local council service center.

Message from the Chair:

Volunteers The scouting program is only as good as its participants and volunteers.

The Coyote Creek district has a small but very dedicated group of volunteers that help to keep our district moving forward and providing the intended program for the scouts. This month, I’d like to recognize the efforts of two of our volunteers.

HA PHAN Hats off to district volunteer Ha Phan. Besides be active in a scouting unit, Ha Phan also coordinated and led the Coyote Creek efforts for Scout-O-Rama which includes getting units to participate in both the event as well as the Ticket Sales. These ticket sales are critical to the district and council as it is one of the mechanisms to acquire the operating funds for the program. Thanks to Ha’s efforts, as well as the efforts of all the unit volunteers and scouts, Coyote Creek led the council in ticket sales! GIRI VENKAT Giri has been an integral part of the district operating committee for a couple of years. He has held the position of the Vice District Chair in charge of Programs. The programs include Popcorn, Scout-O-Rama, Camporee, Cub Camp, Boy Scout camping, advancement, and Pine Wood Derby, to name a few. On top of that Giri is the CubMaster of Pack 275. To say that we couldn’t do it without Giri’s help is an understatement. But as is the case of so many of us in the Silicon Valley, life and work get in the way of our desire to work with Scouting. Giri needs to step down from his role as Vice Chair as his employment needs more of his time now. Please help me in thanking Giri for all of his efforts! Of course that leaves a large need within the district to help fill Giri’s shoes. Please look within your hearts to see if you have the compassion to help our district youth with this organizational role. Do you know of someone that would be a leader to help?

Trained Leaders

Looking at our progress over the past month on improving our training profile . . .no progress! To run an effective program, our youth leaders need to be adequately trained. What can you do? 1. Talk to your unit’s leaders to find out who

needs training and then identify a training course for them. Many of the courses are available as on-line trainings.

2. Unit leaders can access their unit’s training charts at my.scouting.org. If you need help with my.scouting.org, ask for assistance from

your unit commissioner or reach out to once of the individuals in the contact list (below).

3. Look at the training section (of this Newsletter). Visit the Council’s training website at http://svmbc.org/svmbc/training/training-

calendar/ 4. If you are a parent and not a registered leader,

ask your Pack, Troop or Crew what you can do to help your unit.

5. If you don’t see the training session that your leaders require, contact your district representatives for assistance about holding a training (see the contact list below)

6. LET’S MOVE THE NEEDLE!
