team enjoyed an evening with Macnas as they opened

their doors at Fisheries Field. We were sweating after a

one hour workshop and can only imagine what it takes

to co-ordinate 300 volunteers, puppets and performers

in their theatrical spectacles. Artistic Director, Noeline

Kavanagh, showed us her first creation, a Ship of Fools,

and we will all have to set sail if we lose the majesty

and magic of the parade from the streets of Galway. A

company whose philosophy is art and heart, we need

to keep it beating for generations to come, and you

We are set to be peddling around the city in July 2014, as the Galway City Bike Scheme has been launched. With Coke Zero as the sponsor, 200 bikes will be emblazoned with the famous logo and docked at 20 stations across the city. Cllr Neil McNeilis is pushing to have them rolled out in May - in time for the local elections. The hugely successful scheme is already in place at NUIG, where they are in the pink with their new campus transport. However, the bicycles were

not meant to be the blushing shade. “We ordered maroon in keeping with the Galway colours,” explains Student Union President, Sean Kearns, “but they came back from the factory more of a pink shade!” Despite this, both staff and students are enjoying spinning around on two wheels.

“The reaction has been really positive. We are delighted and everyone is getting fit,” he says.

The Galway city fair parking campaign is in overdrive as the ‘angry birds’ have set up a meeting with the top dog, Director of Services, Ciaran Hayes. The campaign is upping a gear after Jimmy Griffin, from Griffin’s Bakery on Shop Street secured the meeting to challenge the high cost of city parking. It is “a welcome development” he said, “and

an opportunity to enter into dialogue” with city hall. Fed up with customer complaints about parking charges, Mr Griffin took to social media and set up the ‘Galway City Parking Information from Griffins Bakery’ facebook page. It has become an outlet for the ‘angry birds’ and a platform for disgruntled motorists.

Galway street theatre group, Macnas, need to raise €10k for their October 27th parade spectacle and are looking to the Fund It website to make this happen. You can help by donating anything from a little to a lot to bring the giant sculptural images, glorious big beasts, huge puppets, live raucous music and thumping drum beats back to the streets of Galway, in what has become a 26-year-old tradition. Unable to perform at the Galway Arts Festival this year, the company is bringing their artistic and creative thrills and spills back to the streets. However, finance is needed to ensure the connection between Macnas and the city is not lost. “We have hundreds of people taking part in the parade. We need to costume them all so that they look and feel amazing,” says Artistic Director, Noeline Kavanagh.

“We need your help to transform our cast of hundreds, from volunteers

into dreamers, schemers, fools, misfits, inventors and engineers of imagination. Help us ensure we don’t lose this wonderful, magical event. The Show Must Go On

Up to 30K visitors are expected for the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, taking place until Sunday, Sept 29th. It is set to bring a €9m boost to the local economy during the 4-day feast of fun and entertainment. Among the highlights, Michelin Star Chef, Kevin Thornton, will be on hand to judge the ‘Hot Oyster Awards’ at the festival marquee on Sunday.

Connemara gal, Cara Lyons from Maam Cross, has built up a legion of ‘Car’melians with her YouTube channel Cara’s Good Karma TV. With 100,000 views from around the world in just one year, she showcases her comedic side through her alter ego Candy – a fun loving, flirty and outrageous blonde with a Southern drawl - who dishes out advice on how to be sexy such as: how to achieve those “big greased up chicken lips” the benefits of “sticking excess hair onto your eyelids” and carrying a banana around in your bag at all times.

She also has a serious side and addresses issues such as suicide, body hang ups, and

relationships. Away from the video camera, she is a model, successful artist and works in sales and marketing at the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill. And she is only 22-years-old.

Candy can be a bit – ah - risqué. Has your mum, Sheila, viewed all of the videos?! She has and she loves them! She is always encouraging my creative side. Candy is trashy and a bit of fun. I also have my ‘serious talking’ videos and they are proving to be even more popular than the comedy sketches. I was able to help a young man in America. I had no idea I would be able to do that.

A memorial service is set to be held in Galway following the siege at Westgate mall in

Nairobi, Kenya. Former Kenyan Ambassador, Ms Catherine Muigai Mwangi – who was instrumental in her support for the recent Galway Kenya run – lost her only son and his fiancée in the atrocity. Mbugua Mwangi was killed with his fiancée, Rosemary Wahito in the terrorist attack. Catherine launched the charity event in the

city last month, before returning to Kenya, and shared her enthusiasm with all involved. Galway Simon has extended their deepest sympathies to the former ambassador, while City Councillor, Neil McNeilis, said that a service is currently being organised for the Kenyan community in Galway.

“Catherine was a huge help, not just with the Galway Kenya Run, but with the larger community here in the city,” said Cllr McNeilis.

“The news has come as a big shock to all who know her. It is very sad and our prayers go out to her and her extended family,” he said.

The film, The Quiet Man, has long been associated with Connemara. The Quiet Man Bridge, near Oughterard, is a much loved tourist destination as the movie was screened on location in the area. Now the village of Cong, which straddles the border of County Galway and Mayo, will be home to

a new bronze statue depicting the movie’s icons, John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

The life-size statue will be unveiled on October 6th at 12:30pm by Minister Michael Ring as part of the Cong Festival. Located opposite the tourist office in the village, it will be a permanent

tribute to the legacy of the film and its benefits to the local economy. The 7 foot bronze figure will depict John Wayne’s character, Sean Thornton, carrying Maureen O’Hara’s character, Mary Kate Danaher in an image captured from the original 1952 movie posters.

“The reason we are doing it now is to play our part in the Gathering,” explains Cong Festival organiser Paddy Rock.

“It is time that we sign off on the IOU to Director John Ford and his cast of actors. The statue is important to the community because of the amount of tourists that come to Cong thanks to the film. The statue looks huge, as it’s life size, and this is a humongous occasion!”

Sculptor Mark Rode from Swinford, Co Mayo, was commissioned for the statue. He

is the creator of the 5-beehive piece at Knocknacarra National School and ‘The Sanctuary’ - a trail of 21 life sized native Irish animals and birds at Baile an Coiste and Ard an Coiste on the Headford Road. It was initially drawn up in clay and Mark hired two models in costumes to create the mould.

“It has taken 6 months to complete,” explains Mark.

“I am excited about installing it, putting it into the ground and seeing it in its final place. I am confident that I have the likeness correct. If it was wrong it would have been a failure! Everyone knows John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. This statue will have a big impact and it’s a great idea. It will put a stamp connecting the town with the movie. For a lot of people, The Quiet Man is their favourite film,” he says.

A campaign is underway to keep bums on seats in Galway’s restaurants. City councillors are backing the call to keep the VAT rate for tourism and hospitality at 9%. With the dreaded budget looming, the Restaurants Association of Ireland are banging the drum to ensure the rate does not increase. The reduced VAT figure was introduced in July 2011 on a trial basis and is due to go up to 13.5% at the end of 2013.

If it does, Galway eateries will be in the soup. “The reduction in VAT has helped the tourism sector survive through these very difficult times,”

explains Roger O’Sullivan, owner of The Galleon Restaurant. “It is the key to sustaining employment and has allowed us to be more competitive as a county.”

Maintaining the lower VAT rate “will encourage more customers to eat out,” according to Galway City Councillor, Donal Lyons. “It is important for the future of so many restaurants in Galway. It helps them to provide value for money, ensuring it will be more reasonable for locals and tourists to enjoy a night out. “I have a genuine belief that it has sustained employment in the industry and it is vital for the future of the sector.”

September of 1588 found the Spanish Armada of King Phillip II harassed by the Royal English Fleet in the North Sea. The Armada was blocked from heading South and so decided to take the long way round, sailing around Scotland and down the West coast of Ireland. The plan was to regroup back in Spanish waters and try to beat the English the following summer. Having given the English the slip by going the long way it was just a matter of time before all were sipping sangria in the Bay of Biscay again, right?

Wrong! Had they stopped to ask a local of Connemara the Spanish may have been told that September is just when any pretence of a “summer” in Ireland goes out the window and the wind starts to blow in off the Atlantic, and blow it did! The wind howled in from the East and the sea exploded around the Spanish ships. Anything that was not nailed down was chucked overboard, cannon, anchors, and horses (yes horses!!) to speed the fleet forward.

• 8am: The John Behan ‘Hell of the West Coast’ Cycle Challenge takes place today in aid of Croí. Join Galway sporting heroes in a cycle challenge to test all levels of fitness.

• 10am: Bake Fest continues at Leisureland with sweet treats and eats. There will be talks with celebrity bakers and food writers and all for a good cause – Act for Meningitis.

• 12pm: The Galway Bay Jazz Band play live at Busker Brownes on Cross St.

• 12:30pm: Enjoy a live jazz session at the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Sq, from 12:30pm.

• 1pm: The Once Loved Showroom takes place at The Roisin Dubh, Dominick Street, with 25 stalls selling once loved items.

• 2pm: An Artist’s Talk takes place at The Shed, Galway Docks, from 2-6pm. Artspace artists will talk about their collaborative processes.

• 8pm: I Saw Stars will entertain with gypsy jazz at Kelly’s on Bridge St.

• 8:15pm: The Galway Film Society presents Therese Desqueyroux starring the wonderful Audrey Tautou at the Town Hall Theatre.

• 9pm: Sinnerboy play at the Roisin Dubh, bringing the blues, rock and ballads of Rory Gallagher to the stage


Alas, little did the Spanish know, due to lack of knowledge and miscalculations, they were caught in The Gulf Stream and being pushed north. Battered, bruised and short of water, the fleet had no choice but to make port in Ireland… it’s unfortunate that they had thrown their anchors away. Out of options, the fleet turned on mass and rammed the west coast of Ireland.

In total, some 12 ships were wrecked off the Connaught coast. Two large warships were run aground in Galway bay; the 300-ton Falco Blanco at Barna and the 255-ton Concepcino at Carna.

Well over 1,000 Spanish sailors and officers struggled out of the surf, their ships abandoned and wrecked on the craggy coast of Connaught. The people of Galway leapt at their chance! Enemies of the dreaded English are surely our friends, right? Catholic friends, at that, right?

Wrong! Oh, the chance was leapt at all right, a chance to steal their stuff! Heck, some people actually lured ships on to the rocks just for that purpose! The Spaniards were able to rally though and formed a host of about 600 men. Fearing something of a fifth column, Lord Deputy of Ireland, Sir. William Fitzgerald ordered

that all Spaniards, be killed on sight, regardless of rank. The people of Galway responded with gusto and perhaps as many as 1,100 men were killed and executed. Only a handful of sailors ever made it back to Spain. By no means did only Galwegians do the killing, but as the only city in the region, many sailors met their end at the Galway Gaol.

The Armada ran aground 425 years ago, but the event remains a black spot on the history of a nation that has often been on the wrong end of atrocities. There are a number of Spanish sailors buried at Forthill Cemetery beside the docks; there is a small plaque in Spanish and Irish to mark the place. It is a quiet tribute to an oft forgotten part of this city’s rich history.

That’s according to Professor Mike Baille of Queens University Belfast, who will hold a meeting for amateur and professional astronomers at the Westwood House Hotel. This event is one of a series of monthly meetings held by the Galway Astronomy Club and is just €2 to attend.

• 8pm: The Galway Music Residency will play at the Nuns Island Theatre in the city as part of their national tour. It’s not just a concert, but a musical and visual event, with imagery designed to enhance the mood as they take you from Bach to contemporary composers in an uplifting evening.

Almost one year after a dynamic group of local singers and musicians came together to create a song for Lily Mae, the Tiny Dancer Special Edition EP has reached No 1 in the iTunes vocal albums chart. Four year old Lily-Mae Morrison from Claregalway is suffering from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare and extremely aggressive childhood cancer of the nervous system. She is the daughter of professional ballet dancers, Judith Sibley and Leighton Morrison.

• The Galway Jazz Festival gets underway today with international stars such as Bertha Hope, and our own homegrown acts, including Michael Buckley. There will be extensive workshops and the popular jazz festival club will be back, with exciting jam sessions that are now becoming a famous fixture of the festival programme. Runs until October 13th.

• Open House Galway kicks off today until Sunday, October 13. Over one weekend, Galway buildings of all types and periods will open their doors to allow us to explore the architecture of the city, with special tours by professionals and enthusiasts, completely for free.

MotivationYou want to make a big change: lose weight, increase muscle, eat cleaner, feel better in general - but how do you achieve it? You must 1. make a firm decision, 2. make a detailed plan, 3. take immediate action. Write down your goal in detail, e.g. “In three months I will... be 20kg lighter/buy clothes in a smaller size/be able to run 10k/have given up sugar/have decreased body fat and increased muscle”.

Make a plan to achieve this goal. Get help from a mentor (via internet/gym/a friend who has done it before). Start working on your goal the same day. Buy ingredients for cleaner meals, go for a walk, take a fitness class, lift weights at the gym - whatever is on your list, start now.

Stick to the plan. Every day, write down one small thing you did to help achieve your goal. Be accountable to your mentor so you have to keep your word. Take responsibility, stay focused and in three months you will have achieved something to be proud of.
