SK2 ConceptThe Crate House

The location of this project leads to a cargo−crate inspired solution. In the port city of Fremantle, timber crates were once quintessential to the shipping industry before giant metal containers become the standard. Unlike the cold metal boxes, these crates and pallets were irregular in size, shape and material, but were oozing with warmth and character. And just like those timber boxes, this design attempts to differentiate itself from the monotonous housing developments.

The concept consists of 3 simple boxes to represent abandoned shipping crates − the hero being a timber crate slightly buried in the landscape, followed by two nondescript boxes in the background. The internal and external walls, floor and ceiling of the timber crate section will have vertical joint timber look and colour. The rest of the external walls will have smooth rendered texture to allow the timber box to pop.

To preserve as much of the site as possible, the pole home is designed around the existing tree. This not only helps the building nestle comfortably into the land, it also gives it an appearance of a mature home. The house is also split into 2 different levels to follow the heavy slope.

Even though the house has multiple levels, it is designed with accessibility in mind. The main level contains living areas, master bedroom, laundry and patio which follow Liveable Housing guidelines. When accessibility becomes an issue in future, the main part of the house will remain easy to access, navigate and live in. Being on a separate level, the minor bedrooms feel separate to the main house and have its own secluded outdoor space, which is ideal for young adults still living at home.

Living areas including outdoor entertainment are located at the Worthern front for passive warming benefits during winter. On a smaller Worth−facing lot, having outdoor area at the front helps to maximise usable outdoor space that would otherwise be lost in the front setback. The generous front patio is influenced by large front veranda of traditional worker cottages that once dominated the streetscape of Fremantle. Locals used to spend their hot summer evenings lazing on the front veranda and conversing with passers−by. This culture is sadly lost when patios are moved to the backyards. This design hopes that by moving the outdoor space to the front, it will bring the occupants to the front as well and revive the community connection.
