Parents who are concerned about the behavior of their children in grades 7-12 may get help from a new branch of the Family Links program—the Success Academy (SA).
The project, which is similar to an alternative school, has proven to be a “success” in helping at-risk students with behavioral issues or those who are behind in their classroom work continue their education, obtain a GED and/or prepare for a job after high school.
The Success Academy was Judge Laura Phillip’s vision in 2007. Phillips worked with Family Links Board President, Sheriff Larry Amerson, as well as, other Family Links Board mem-bers and staff members to develop the Success Academy under the umbrella of Family Links.
“Judge Phillips was the person who was always in the picture to get things done and quickly to make Success Academy a reality and start helping kids at-risk,” said Sheriff Larry Amerson.
Amerson said positive influence is cru-cial to the success of the program. “The creation of this program gives time and attention to these kids to allow them to use their intelligence in a positive way.
The Family Links board supports this effort to try and help at-risk young peo-ple. It’s been successful in this first year (2008-09). We look forward to much more good coming from the project.”
Robin Mackey, Executive Director for Family Links and Administrator of the Success Academy, credits Philllips, Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson, Judge Brenda Stedham, and Mike Rollins, director of Coosa Valley Youth Services, for the progress in helping more than 30 youths in its first year.
“They got the Success Academy off the ground, “said Mackey. “Mike even brought over his staff to renovate the building. They worked at night in addi-tion to working their regular jobs.”
Mackey is referring to the Success Academy’s facility at the former poly-graph building at Fort McClellan, locat-ed just beyond the McClellan Center for Jacksonville State University and Gadsden State College.
Family Links rents the building from Auburn University’s Canine Training School. The task was to turn several offices into classrooms to hold the maxi-mum number of 30 students.
Walls had to be torn out, classrooms were painted, and new furniture, carpet, and computers were purchased.
In addition to the task of finding class-room space, teachers had to be procured.
Coosa Valley Youth Services sent Carlos Tolbert to serve as SA’s first head teacher. He has now returned to his for-mer job and Rodney Tillison replaced him and now supervises a staff of three other teachers at the SA. Success Academy also has a counselor, a case manager, and an administrative assis-
tant. During their first year, the staff helped
35 students sent to them by the court, and they are filling up their classrooms again this year. (The program runs year-round.) Partners that assist in the program include the Juvenile Probation Officers and Calhoun/Cleburne Mental Health Center Therapist, Alleda Glass, who provides counseling for the stu-dents.
“There was a new juvenile justice bill passed a few years ago, “said Mackey. “The legislature mandated that kids should have a program that keeps them in their communities and their homes. The Success Academy is one way Calhoun County’s doing that.”
Amerson said a federal government study conducted a few years ago showed the average young person choosing a life of crime would cost $1 million each to provide their upkeep in their lifetime. He said programs like Success Academy provide the opportunity to persuade kids to choose a positive way of life and help them become productive citizens.
People who work with them demon-strate that they really care and often this is the key to the success of a spe-cial project and Success Academy has proved it’s off to a good start in the right direction.

Any good program needs Vol-unteers. One in particular made a difference in keeping the fi rst class of Success Academy stu-dents motivated. Volunteer and local fi lmmaker, Annie Brunson, spent more than 100 hours teaching students how to write and produce a fi lm. All aspects of the students’ stud-ies were incorporated into the fi lm project. She helped the male students produce a fi ve minute fi lm about bullying in schools,
and she helped the female stu-dents produce a four minute thriller fi lm. Both fi lms were entered in the Birmingham based Sidewalk Film Festival, Sept. 25-27.Volunteers at both Success Acad-emy and Family Links are needed to help sit for young children dur-ing parent classes and to help tu-tor students. Call 256-820-5911, if interested. For more information visit the website-www.familylinksonline.org.
