The Crypt School Sixth Form Curriculum
For their CORE CURRICULUM, the majority of students take four AS (Advanced Subsidiary) subjects in
Year 12, and then concentrate on three A2 (Advanced Level) subjects in Year 13. Students will sit
internal mock examinations in November and April, and will take their ‘real’ examinations in May
and June.
Choosing your A level subjects is an important decision which needs careful thought. As a general
guide we recommend you consider the following:
Ability- Are you good at the subject? Have you spoken with your subject teacher or looked at the
course outline in detail? Are you prepared to work hard to ensure your success?
Suitability- Is an A Level in this subject going to provide you with the necessary qualifications to
follow your chosen course in higher education or pursue your chosen career?
Enjoyment- Are you genuinely interested in the subject? Does your interest extend beyond the
classroom?
Subjects Offered At A-Level
Accounting Art Biology Business Studies
Chemistry Computing Creative Writing Design Technology
Economics English Literature English Language French
Further Maths Geography German Government and Politics
History Mathematics Music Music Technology
Philosophy and Ethics Physics Psychology Spanish
Sports Studies Theatre Studies
Please visit our website for subject-specific information: www.cryptschool.org/sixth-form
NB. Please be aware that any subject may be withdrawn from the school curriculum if numbers of
pupils enrolled in each subject is deemed too small or financial considerations deem it necessary to
withdraw a subject from the VI form curriculum.
Entry Requirements (September 2015):
In order to enter the Crypt 6th Form students must gain:
1. A minimum of 7 A*-C grades at GCSE: these must be full course GCSE’s (not equivalents). This must include at least 4 B grades.
2. GCSE Maths and English Language GCSE, grade C or above. The following requirements are needed for individual subjects: Accounting
GCSE B Maths
Art GCSE B Biology GCSE B + B in Chemistry (preferable) or BB Double Award Business Studies GCSE B (or related Humanity) + B in Maths Chemistry Computing Creative Writing
DT Economics English Language English Literature French Further Maths Geography German G & P History Mathematics Music/Music Tech P & E Physics Psychology Spanish Sports Studies Theatre Studies

Further advice/ requirements for students:
1. You must study at least two subjects which you have previously studied (at GCSE) 2. You should be careful with the number of practical subjects (Art, Computing, Sports Studies,
Drama, DT, Music) that you may wish to study 3. Potential applicants to Russell group universities ( Russell Group refers to 30 of the UK’s
leading research-led Universities - such as Bristol, Oxford, Warwick, Nottingham etc.) should be careful not to study more than two ‘studies’ at AS and only one at A2 – e.g. Sports Studies, Business Studies, Theatre Studies etc.
4. We advise students studying Chemistry and/or Physics to study AS Maths
6th Form Enrichment Curriculum
Students also supplement their core curriculum by taking one or more options from our
ENRICHMENT CURRICULUM on a Wednesday afternoon. From September 2015 this is likely to

The Enrichment programme at The Crypt School is designed to develop students’ skills. Part of the
ethos of the Sixth Form is to develop students as whole individuals. With a wide range of activities,
every student has ample opportunity to broaden their interest base and learn new skills.
In terms 5 and 6 of Year 12 students focus on UCAS and have a host of Business careers talks. These
talks further support work carried out by the school careers advisor, careers fair held in school in
January, careers fair for apprenticeships in Oct and the UCAS fair in March.
The talks are from a variety of backgrounds such as Banking, Architecture, Volunteering, Engineering
and Art, offering students an invaluable understanding of the world beyond school. Sixth Formers
can also complete an Employability Award over the time spent with us which encourages the
development of their human and social capital. What is certain is that “we do not do boring at The
Crypt Sixth Form”.
COMPULSORY CURRICULUM: All Sixth Form students participate in our PHSE programme which
takes place once a fortnight and at various special events throughout the year.

ENTRY FOR PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS
It is expected that pupils will be entered for all the GCSE subjects they study in Years 10 and
11, at the end of Year 11. The flexibility of GCSE different levels of certification enables
decisions to be made about the most appropriate level of entry, usually during the Autumn
Term of Year 11.
Sixth Formers are entered for AS examinations in Year 12 and then make guided decisions
about which subjects to continue at A2 for entry in Year 13. Where appropriate, individuals
with particular strengths are enabled to enter for non timetabled subjects, such as Chinese,
Urdu, Arabic, Music, Astronomy.
