We are family...PERSONALITIES from the worlds of sport and food will bring a celebrity touch to Reaseheath College’s Family Festival on Sunday May 12. Demonstrations by celebrity chef Brian Mellor and football freestyler Craig Gorey will take centre stage, along with a classical dressage display by the Pen Llyn team of Lusitano horses.

Craig (pictured) is a professional all round freestyler whose football displays are described as both educational and entertaining. The Pen Llyn Lusitanos are stunning Portuguese horses specially trained to perform precise classical movements to music. The schedule will also feature a bird demonstration, a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,

calf and sheep shows, sheep shearing, a farmers’ and craft market, horse riding displays, tours of the college’s zoo and a fun dog show. There will be cheese tasting and gardening demonstrations, a high ropes course and climbing wall, archery and miniature train rides. The event runs from 10am until 5pm.

Taking time outA NANTWICH abattoir could reopen despite being shut down for failing to meet standards for the safe production of meat. The Food Standards Agency forced The Red Lion to close last month after failing to meet infrastructure requirements. Owners High Peak Meat Exports have reportedly

said they will not appeal the decision. However they do plan to invest and reapply to the FSA to reopen at some stage in the future. The FSA said their decision had ‘absolutely nothing to do

with the horsemeat issue’ or the on-going investigation into ‘inconsistencies with horse passports’. Campaigners (pic by Jonathan White) staged protests to close the abattoir after undercover footage of shocking animal welfare conditions led to international outrage three months ago.

A DOCTOR Who fanatic from Nantwich is hoping to stitch up a tidy sum for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice by knitting Tom Baker-style scarves. James Nicholls, 28, took up knitting to relax while studying for his accountancy qualification and has sold the long, colourful scarves on the internet for £50. Now his colleagues are sponsoring his challenge to watch 900 episodes – a total of

422 hours – of the Time Lord’s intergalactic travels. He said: “When they heard I knit scarves they suggested I did it for the hospice while sponsoring me to watch my entire collection of DVDs in 900 days. “I’m just over half way through and have reached 1978 with Tom Baker as the Doctor . “There’s quite a way to go yet but so far I have not missed a day.”

PLANS for the first phase of ‘Nantwich South’ have been thrown out by Cheshire East Councillors. Developers Muller Properties submitted proposals for 189 new homes in Stapeley, which were refused for various reasons, including housing supply, impact on the landscape and the loss of agricultural land. However there was controversy over the access road off Peter de Stapleigh Way – originally set for refusal due to four mature oak

trees on site. The decision had to be deferred after three of the trees were cut down prior to the meeting. Protect Stapeley campaigner Pat Cullen said: “I’m absolutely disgusted with the people involved. “It shows they don’t care about our community, they are only interested in the money.” Muller Property said they were not aware of the tree felling. The landowners were unavailable for comment.

TWO teenage dancers have made it through to the next stage of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. Chloe Hewitt, aged 17, and 18-year-old AJ Pritchard, from Nantwich, got three ‘yes’ votes from judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, David

Walliams and Alesha Dixon after impressing with their Latin moves. The friends, who have been dancing together for six years, have previously performed at Nantwich Show and have taken top honours in several national contests.

HOUSING provider Wulvern has completed its £1.8m project on Wellington Road. The three storey building with underground parking offers 12 two-bedroom and two one-bedroom apartments.

SCORE of competitors are set to take part in next month’s triathlon in Nantwich on Sunday June 2.

The Go Green Cheshire Triathlon is aimed at all abilities and features ‘fun’, ‘super sprint’, ‘sprint’ and ‘relay’ categories, all involving the disciplines of swimming cycling and running. Edward Timpson, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, has this year swapped his usual

London Marathon to take part. As a training exercise, Edward and his wife Julia (pictured) recently completed the Cheshire 10k Run in Queen’s Park, and donated their entry fees for both races to CLIMB - a local charity for children with metabolic diseases, of which Mrs Timpson is a patron. Edward said: “It was great to see so many runners from across the country coming to run round Queen’s Park in the early spring sunshine. “I’m very much looking forward to a change and competing in the Nantwich triathalon this year, though I suspect I’ll be back marathon running pretty soon!” The event takes place at Snowhill Swimming Pool and Barony Park. RARE spiders, bred at Reaseheath College, are to co-star with wildlife legend Sir David Attenborough in a pioneering television series. The feeding behaviour of the Indian social spiders will be featured in ‘Micro Monsters in 3D’. Reaseheath’s spiders received the call to stardom because they are one of very few species to exhibit group living and feeding behaviour. The vast majority of spiders are solitary. A vivarium containing around 200 spiders – one

of five colonies currently breeding at Reaseheath – made the journey to Atlantic Productions’ high tech film studio in central London. They were accompanied by exotics keeper Chris Pye, who advised during the four hours of filming. Reaseheath’s collection has a mother, daughter and three research colonies, all flourishing. The breeding programme has been so successful that keeper Lauren Lane is putting together standard husbandry guidelines for the species.

Live and kickingNANTWICH band Blitz Kids will be one of the headline acts at this year’s Crewe Live music festival. The festival returns to the town for its fifth year at the end of the month. The four-day event takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend from May 24 to 27 in the town’s pubs, bars and clubs. Cambridgeshire rockers Mallory Knox will lead the line-up on the Friday night in a double header with South Cheshire’s own Blitz Kids (pictured above). The Saturday night will feature ‘mathcore’ band Rolo Tomassi (pictured), who come to the festival following the release of their highly acclaimed third album in December. Constantly pushing boundaries, NME described the female fronted outfit as ‘one of

the most adventurous, forward-thinking and inexplicably overlooked bands in the country’.

Along with headline shows featuring national bands, the four-day festival will also be showcasing music from upcoming local artists such as Kill The Doctor and Troops of Mafeking. Venues already involved in this year’s event include

The Box, The Brunswick, The Imp, Square One and Corner Bar, with more to be confirmed soon. Spokesman for organisers Volume PR, Mark Hilditch said: “Mallory Knox are one of the UK’s finest upcoming rock bands. “They have been on Radio One all year and are playing some of the biggest festivals this summer so we’re really pleased to have them in Crewe. “Putting them on the same bill as Blitz Kids, who are friends of the band as well, is bound to make for an explosive start to the festival. “And while it’s great to have bigger names on the event, the festival is really about showcasing unsigned talent.” For tickets and more information visit www.crewelive.co.uk. Weekend tickets are £15.

NANTWICH runner Mark Hardy took on this year’s London Marathon to raise funds for charity. Mark, who was running in support of the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA), hopes to raise £2,000. A veteran of three previous marathons – London 2009 and 2012 and Rome 2010 – he completed the race in just over five hours, about the same as last year. Mark said: “Being among 38,000 other runners is such an amazing feeling. The atmosphere at the London Marathon is unbelievable and the crowd really carries you along.” Mark was also one of a team of five amateur cyclists who cycled from London to Paris at Easter to raise money for the NWAA. The ride covered 260 miles and took four days, with the team battling gale force winds

and long uphill climbs. They raised around £1,200 in sponsorship. Mark is hoping to raise a further £1,000 for the NWAA later in the year when he tackles a sponsored back to back climb of the three Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdonia. In all he hopes to be able

to hand over £3,000 from his personal fundraising to the charity by the end of June. Mark said: “The North West Air Ambulance provides a service which can literally mean the difference between life and death for injured or seriously ill people.” Supporters can donate at justgiving.com/mh-sos.

GOOD TIMES!

THE next production by Nantwich Players - The Forsyte Saga - has generated great interest in fans of the TV versions in the 1960s and 2002. John Galsworthy’s characters feature in nine books, richly deserving the title ‘Saga’, so to condense the story into a play lasting a couple of hours has been a challenge. This adaptation uses three elderly Forsytes, James, Juley and Hester, to narrate the play and move the action onwards over some 35 years. A further challenge for Nantwich Players is for the actors to mature over the same period: a great opportunity for the make-up department to show its skills! In addition, costumes and props have to reflect the years when the play is set. Fashions changed between the Victorians and the 1920s just as much as they do today. Director Charlotte Lightbody said: “We are doing all we can to ensure that we get the period details right, which is so important to make the action

believable and to show the passage of time. “For example, the key story line involves the design and building of a grand new country house for Soames Forsyte. “Nantwich architects Bower Edleston have kindly lent us an authentic architect’s drawing, designed for the owners of Marbury Hall in 1883, and this will ensure that it looks just right. “The plan is printed on paper which is linen-backed, as was the custom in those days.”

The Forsyte Saga has a cast of 14 and an even larger backstage team, some of whom are new members. With make-up, wigs, costumes, and properties such as the architectural plan, the team have a lot to work on but Charlotte is confident it will all come together in time. And if you think you would like to find out more about the group visit www.nantwichplayers.com. Performances run from May 17 to 25.

Students get a taste of Spanish cultureA GROUP of Nantwich food students have visited Spain for a taste of the local food, wine and culture. The group of 34 students, spent four days visiting food and drink manufacturing sites in and around Catalonia. Their busy schedule included behind the scenes tours of the

Codorniu winery (pictured), a Cava specialist, and the Torres winery, a producer of standard red and white wines. The students also enjoyed a full day in Barcelona, where they visited La Boqueria food market to see the range of fresh Spanish foods available

and took time off to visit the famous tourist area of Las Ramblas. Other activities included a trip round the Anchoves De L’Escala, an anchovy factory, where the group watched as the fish delicacy was salted and bottled in oil. Another day was spent

seeing the chocolate manufacturing process at Chocolates Torras and visiting La Fageda dairy, a self funding project run by a charity. The group was based in Lloret de Mar, a Mediterranean coastal town 75 kilometres from Barcelona.

IN THE FRAMEAshton United manager tops the list to become new Dabbers bossDANNY Johnson is expected to be the man to lead Nantwich Town’s push for promotion next season. The 37-year-old Ashton United boss has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Jimmy Quinn who was axed two months ago. One of the youngest managers in EvoStik Premier, Johnson has earned plenty of plaudits by keeping Ashton in a mid-table position on a small budget over the past six seasons. Despite Darren Moss sparking a mini-revival as caretaker manager and ‘big name’ league candidates also in the frame, The Dabber understands chairman Jon Gold and director of football Clive Jackson were keen to appoint a manager with experience in the league and good connections.

It’s also likely Nantwich agreed to wait until the end of the season to name their new manager. “We want someone that understands the philosophy of the club, improve our young players and move them on to bigger things,” said Gold.

“We need to consolidate and look to push on. “We want to try and gain promotion to Conference North playing attractive football.” Former Dabbers striker Sean Cooke was voted EvoStik Premier’s Young Player of the

Year. The 20-year-old left for AFC Fylde in February and has bagged 20 goals this season. “I had two fantastic seasons at Nantwich”, he said. “It’s my hometown club and it will always have a special place in my heart.”
