COMMUNITY VOICE WWW.DARLEYDALE.GOV.UK

WELCOME!

This is a very busy period in the life of a Town Clerk as there is lots going on.

There are a few changes to report within the Town Council. We would like to welcome Anne Welch to the Council, she brings a wealth of local knowledge , is an active member of the Methodist church and Church Road allotments association and in her professional life is the Eco Schools Officer for Derbyshire County Council encouraging people to minimise waste and promote recycling.

My thanks go to all involved in making our annual remembrance service a memorable occasion. It’s a real community event and we would like to thank the local veterans and active serving members, the local churches, uniformed youth organisations, the schools , community police and of course Darley Dale Brass band who add to the solemnity of the occasion.

It is also that time of the year we consider finances in more detail, first we will have the finance assessment panel looking at Community grants where the Town Council award monies to local groups. This year we have had more applicants than ever. I will report back on this in the New Year.

Secondly it’s time to set the Council budget for the forthcoming year so Councillors will be

scrutinising the finances to determine future spend for 2019/20.The Town Council would like to congratulate Darley Dale in Bloom for their success in attaining a Gold Award for the third year running. They certainly make the Town look beautiful all year around with their stunning floral displays which are much appreciated and enjoyed by so many local people.

Huge progress has been made by the Neighbour Plan group who have been busy writing and rewriting the Neighbourhood Plan to reflect the planning needs of our Town, it has been shaped by 2 consultations periods with local residents and written with the aid of a planning consultant, all of which has created a document which is designed to help shape Darley Dale for the future. This has now been delivered to the District Council for their comments which is a forerunner to the next stage of a further consultation period and local referendum.

My next jobs will be arranging the Annual Town Council Pantomime which this year is Mother Goose (see the advert on page 7 for full details) and sorting out the Town Council Christmas tree. I’d like to give a belated thanks to Matlock Electrical Services who kindly donated their time and resources as their gift to our town, in lighting up our Christmas tree in 2017, this was very much appreciated.

UpdateTOWN CLERK’S

to the last issue of Community Voice in 2018. All members of the Town Council would also like to ask that we all remember those that are less fortunate than ourselves, especially at this time of year. Please check on your elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives to make sure that they are healthy, safe, warm and not alone this Christmas.

We would all like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT COUNCIL MEETINGS ON THE THIRD THURSDAY OF THE MONTH AT 7pm AT THE WHITWORTH CENTRE, WHERE YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT WE DO. IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR REQUESTS. LET ME KNOW IN GOOD TIME.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEMOn a beaufiful sunny

afternoon on Sunday 11th November our impressive procession left Broadwalk shopping parade, and marched behind Darley Dale Brass Band to the War Memorial in the Whitworth Park where they met a large gathering of local residents. Immediately behind the band were the local Beavers, Cubs, Brownies and Guides. Many people took part in the service including children from the local Primary Schools.

A huge thankyou to all members of the community who joined us on a bright and cold afternoon, young, old, families, social groups and even family pets came to pay their respects. A lovely sight to see.

We will remember them.

30th Anniversary Celebrations How you could be involved....

2019 is the 30th anniversary of the forming of the Twinning Association. Over all these years, we have made many friends in our French twin town Onzain. They and others have been invited to send a group to Darley Dale to celebrate this achievement on the weekend of 8/9 June 2019. For this special occasion, it is

likely that there will be a large number of visitors and we need to find host families, who would be willing to accommodate any of them, if you have the room. We are planning a programme of events that will include some meals, to reduce the number that host families provide.

If you would like to help us in this way, offer something else or for more information, please get in touch with Kevin Senior - 01629 733053/07768 922003. Speaking French is not compulsory, as most of our visitors speak some English.

Our provisional programme includes an official welcome by the Mayor of Darley Dale, a visit to Tissington Hall - led by Sir Richard Fitzherbert, a communal meal in the Whitworth Ballroom and Sunday morning service at St. Helen’s Church.

A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest.

This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential life saving step in the chain of survival. If you come across someone who has had a cardiac arrest, it’s vital to call 999 and start CPR. Then you should find out if there is a defibrillator nearby. There are many defibrillators available in and around Darley Dale, (listed below) known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency. You shouldn’t be afraid of using a defibrillator if someone has had a cardiac arrest. When the defibrillator is switched on, it explains exactly what to do and when. The person using the machine just has to follow the voice prompts. St John Ambulance advises that these devices are effective - if someone has a cardiac arrest and CPR and a defibrillator is used within three minutes of them collapsing, the chance of survival could be as high as 70%.

Our intention is to include a current list on the back of each issue as a reference which we will endeveaur to keep up to date with your help.

IF YOU ARE AWARE OF ANY OTHER PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATORS IN THE AREA PLEASE NOTIFY US ASAP.

Better Derbyshire Dales Fund

The Better Derbyshire Dales Fund is now in its fourth year of awarding small grants to voluntary and community groups in the Dales. The fund is a mixture of money from the Derbyshire Dales District Council, the North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Derbyshire

County Council – Public Health. Over the years it has funded all sort of projects and activities locally including new chairs for the Darley Dale Scouts and Guides group, new sound system and transport costs for Memory Lane, walking poles for the Nordic Walking Group that meets in Whitworth Park, contributions towards domed wicket covers and an all-weather practice cage for Darley Dale Cricket Club and a contribution towards making St Mary’s Church, South Darley Church more accessible to running community events. The Better Derbyshire Dales Fund has quarterly rounds throughout the year with the next being Friday 15th February 2019.If you would like to find out more about the fund and how your group might apply to this grant-scheme please contact Jonathan Simcock or Sarah Paisley at Derbyshire Dales CVS on 01629 812154.

Recently refurbished town square in Onzain

On the Sunday afternoon we shall be organising a “Music in the Park” event. This will be open for everyone in Darley Dale to come along to see and enjoy the musical talent we have in the area, as well as the French musicians travelling over to perform for us.

Check our our website - www.darleydaletwinning.org.uk - for more information about the Twinning Association and get the latest information for the celebration weekend.

Oker Estate Association

Look out for Christmas decorations around the estate during December. We are currently planning a joint project with the PTA and

pupils at Churchtown School to produce Christmas decorations which will be installed around the estate over the holiday period.

DIARY DATE: Our next litter pick is scheduled for Tuesday 8th. January 2019. Anyone who can spare an hour of their time to help with the litter pick is most welcome to join us. Meet outside no. 13 Oker Avenue at 10:00am.

The group were very busy again in October clearing the A6 beds, the five beds at the Whitworth Centre, and all the other tubs and planters for which they are responsible, before replanting with the winter bedding. The violas were already in flower to provide plenty of colour, with more to look forward to from the wallflowers, primulas, bellis and other plants.

As well as receiving sponsorship and donations from a number of local businesses and private individuals, for which the ‘In Bloom’ committee are very grateful, fundraising continues on a regular basis to help fund this good work. Christmas Carriage Rides with Santa will take place around the Whitworth Park on Sunday 9 December, courtesy of Red House Stables. Santa and his elves will be there between 11 am and I.00 pm, when you can have a ride around the park for £5.00 per person, which includes a raffle ticket! Another date for your diary is an Easter Bunny Hunt around the Whitworth Park on Sunday April 28, 2019, with a Carriage Ride and raffle ticket included in the ticket price of £5.00 per person. The Darley Dale in Bloom group are also planning to hold a fundraising auction in March; details of the date and venue will be announced nearer the time.

The group are always on the lookout for volunteers, so please get in touch if you are interested, however much time you have to spare. They are particularly looking for help to pull the trailer for their water bowser, as only one of their committee has a tow bar on their car!

Did you know we have a group of stargazers that meet every month in your area? We meet the first Wednesday of every month at

The Plough Inn , Two Dales at 7.30pm. We are a small friendly stargazing group who like to observe the night sky from the pub gardens. If the weather is against us we are found in the bar discussing all things space and astronomical! If you are new to the hobby - please come along and share your enthusiasm with us! We can do a scope workshop or help with any equipment worries you have or come and share your expertise! We usually have our local astronomy expert Nigel on hand to give a great guide to the stars and planets visible and the skies are getting darker earlier so we always like to see younger folk too! So if you are interested in the night sky please come along!

You can find us on Facebook - just search for Matlock and Darley Dale Observing Group’s page and like us for updates, or follow on Twitter @astromaddog. Our website is www.maddog.org.uk. Our January meeting may move to the 9th so as not to clash with the new year festivities. Keep a look out on social media and website for details of our events!

Everyone is welcome, no matter what age or ability so hope to see you there!

For various reasons, you have not heard anything about Fairtrade this year, so this report takes you back some time. Our plans for Fairtrade Fortnight in March were hit hard by the

weather. We set up a Fairtrade Trail around the town with shops, pubs and eating places taking a labelled Fairtrade item to display and entry forms for the competition. Sadly very few people took part, but the winner took home a large Fairtrade Easter egg. We thank all the businesses which took part. Our two planned coffee mornings could not take place as we were all snow-bound. The one at the Methodist Hall did take place three weeks later and was very successful. Participants contributed to the Traidcraft Entrepreneur Challenge and with some further additions £70 was raised. This has been doubled by the government as part of a special scheme and we have received thanks from the Traidcraft Exchange charity. More good news: as a result of trading both in Darley Dale and Matlock over the past few years, we were able to donate £200 to the Fairtrade Foundation and £200 to the Traidcraft Exchange for their development work with producers, We were shocked to find that Cadbury’s chocolate and other products no longer carry the FT mark, as they no longer comply with the FT guarantee. However finding Fairtrade has become easier with the arrival of the Co-op and the weekly stall on a Thursday at the Methodist Hall coffee morning and lunch. Help with this stall would be much appreciated. In June the town’s Fairtrade Status was successfully renewed. A letter of appreciation and our new certificate were received in July and the certificate is now on display in the Whitworth Cafe. The latest news is not so good. Traidcraft plc from which we have purchased most of the products sold on our stalls was threatened with closure. They now hope to keep going with a new business model, details of which are not yet available. In the meantime, we are working hard to support them with sales. They have an excellent range of Christmas cards , goodies and gifts. If you would like to organise a coffee morning, tea or evening function for this great purpose, please contact Ingrid Pasteur on 01629 735956 or [email protected] . I look forward to hearing from you soon.

FAIRTRADE

Calling all budding Astronomers!

At their September Celebration Evening at the Whitworth Centre, the group were very happy to announce that they had been awarded a Gold Award for the third year running in the East Midlands in Bloom competition! The Chair of the ‘In Bloom’ committee, Barbara Newton, presented the certificate to Louise Boardman, the Mayor of Darley Dale. In addition, Darley Dale Primary School had been awarded a Judges Award for ‘its contribution to Darley Dale in Bloom’. On the judging tour in July, the judges had been shown the

flower and vegetable plots and the greenhouse being built from recycled plastic bottles. The judges commented that ‘The primary school had some very knowledgeable students who were extremely keen and proud to show the judges around their plots, these youngsters are the future Bloomers in Darley Dale’.

It’s GOLD again for Darley Dale in Bloom!

You can contact them through their Facebook page, website www.darleydaleinbloom.co.uk or Val Singer on 01629 732596

COMMUNITY VOICE WWW.DARLEYDALE.GOV.UKCOMMUNITY VOICE

I want to start by saying a big thankyou to everyone who has supported the Whitworth Trust this year. Staff have once again been brilliant at managing what is such a fantastic facility for local people.

I still talk to people who think the building and park are Council facilities. The Town Council is very supportive of the Whitworth, but it is of course a Charity, reliant on funding itself for the benefit of the people of Darley Dale. The main source of funding is the catering and events that take place almost every day of the year. We thank people for every coffee that is drunk in our cafe, every meeting that is held on site, every club that operates from the site and makes a donation, every person who puts some money in the collection boxes, every wedding that is held there and so on. It is this activity that keeps this facility going for todays residents and of course we hope many generations to come. It is a site where work never ends, as this case with many historic buildings and parks. Whether that is cutting the grass through to some major improvement work that will happen for our catering facilities shortly. We want to do more, keep improving but will only do so with your help. If you feel you can do more to support a local charity that has helped local people for generations, please do let us know.

This year we have welcomed a new General Manager to the Whitworth called Liam Coleman. His accent if you meet him, will tell you that he is not a lifelong Darley Dale resident, but like thousands before him, he has become hooked on the wonderful piece of heritage that is the Whitworth. We have also strengthened the Trustee Board, which is a

mix of Town Councillors and experts in particular fields. Simon Gill is the Operational lead at Cromford Mills and brings great expertise and knowledge about heritage sites. Andy Murdy is a Health and Safety Consultant and of course the safety of staff and visitors will always be a priority. I would like to thank all Trustees, who volunteer their time free of charge and just with the wish to make a difference.

Christmas at the Whitworth is always magical and I am sure this year will be the same. We are planning out a range of events and activities for 2019, that we hope will build on the great work we already do. Please give Liam a ring, if you have ideas on activities you would like to see more of next year. We want to make sure there really is something for everyone.

Finally, we want to consult more with local residents about our future. The original vision of the Sir Joseph Whitworth and Lady Louisa Whitworth, in the 19th Century, was to create a facility to support the health, well being and education of local people. To be an inclusive facility for everyone to enjoy. This is still very much the ambition today and we are looking at some ways to communicate our story better. We see the Whitworth as very much the beating heart of the local community, as it has always been. We look forward to your feedback.
