SYLLABUS FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE Instructor: Ms. Martin. Spanish 5 & 6 (LOTE class) [email protected] CURRICULUM: This course is designed to prepare students for the Regents exam. Students will study the culture and grammar of the Spanish language by listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Everyday in class we will speak, read and write in the target language. The class will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Essential Questions: Unit 1: Personal Identification Essential Question: ¿ Quién soy yo? Grammar: Adjectives. Ser and Estar Major Assignment: 1. Write an essay in Spanish where you describe your physical appearance and personality. 2. In Spanish prepare a dialogue. I’m a new student and you want to get to know me. 3. Bio poema Unit 2: Daily Life Essential Question: ¿ Cuál es tu rutina diaria? Grammar: Stem-‐changing verbs Reflexive verbs Impersonal use of se Major Assignment: Write an essay in Spanish where you describe your daily routine. Unit 3: Family Life/ chores (Los quehaceres domésticos) Essential Question: ¿Cuáles son tus quehaceres? Grammar: Subjunctive and irregular subjunctive Major Assignment: 1. Write a paragraph in Spanish where you describe your daily chores. 2. Write a dialogue in Spanish involving your neighbor who hates housework and you are trying to sell him a robot that can do a variety of household chores. Unit 4: City Life Essential Question: ¿Cómo puedo pedir direcciones? Grammar: Commands Para and por Adverbs and prepositions Major Assignment: 1. In Spanish, give a friend directions to your home. 2. EXPECTATIONS: ·∙ Students should demonstrate the ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish. ·∙ Students should acquire vocabulary to allow accurate reading of newspapers, magazine articles, short and long stories. ·∙ Students should compose essays. ·∙ Students should express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency. ·∙Students should come prepared to class (notebook and pens). ·∙ Homework will be given daily. ·∙ Students are expected to participate, by speaking in class on a daily basis. ·∙ Assignments are to be handed in on time. ·∙ Essays are to be typed, proofread and handed in on time. During each marking period, 2-‐3 chapters will be covered. ·∙ Students will be required to write 2 essays during each marking period. ·∙ Students will be required to speak in the target language daily. ·∙ 2 major exams (finals)-‐ 1 in January and 1 in June.
