Letter From the Executive Director
Dear Members,
Congratulations to our Art Within Reach Grant Winner, Julia Cumes. Her exhibit “Invisible Selves: An Exploration of Female Identity and Experience” was powerful and inspiring. It will be in the Talbot Gallery until April 20, so don’t miss it! Thanks to Gallery Director, Amy Neill, for this new artist opportunity. We hope this is a program that will continue for a long time to spotlight artists on Cape Cod.
Look for the many new programs, classes, workshops, tours, walks and events that we will be holding this Spring and Summer. In addition to our 13th Annual Art in the Village, we will be hosting Harvest Festival of the Arts in September, so sign up to sell your artwork.
Our Brown Bag Lunches have been extremely popular. Thanks to Julie Blanchard, who just did a watercolor demo to a packed room. In June we will have a panel discussion by some of our Master Artists and in May information about Black and White Photography. This free series has been interesting and informative, so join us and bring your lunch.
We are hosting many exciting workshops in all media. Most of them will be in our studios, while others will be off site. Check out newly scheduled photography trips to Falmouth and Montana, and for painters we are working on plein aire locations, including Sandy Neck.
We are working with the Barnstable Historical Society in a project called Barnstable -Then and Now. If you missed the lecture and the info session, there is still time to pick a historic photo or a scene in the village to paint for this exciting summer exhibit. Sign up in the office and get the packet of pictures from which to choose for this exhibit.
Tourists will be coming to the Cape shortly, so be sure to bring in your cards, prints and gift gallery items to sell. Enter your work in the upcoming juried exhibits, All Cape Cod, The National and the All New England as well as our member shows, For the Love of Light, Lazy Days of Summer and True Colors.
Get ready and get your work out there for everyone to see and buy!
Happy Spring!!
Roberta

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH
-What do you enjoy the most about working in this medium? Working with watercolors provides a challenge unlike working in other mediums in that whatever is placed on the paper is generally fixed and final. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment to see my vision realized in a new piece of art. -How do you describe your artwork? My work is expressed with the emphasis on realism. As a descriptive term, Realism is not very precise. For me, it is meant as something more akin to naturalism. Even though objects in nature appear to be exact in their placement, they still exude a flow of movement in a certain way ie: an abstraction. This is attained with my signature style of using broad strokes and detail.
-Tell us about your creative process. I begin each piece with a basis concept which is outlined in pencil on paper. Depending on whether my painting is going to be intricate or more free flowing determines the method used. For my detailed watercolors I use small brushes with a dry technique and for a more free flowing effect I use a method where I paint with water only and then drop color into the water to achieve a more fluid result. My subject matter varies from seascapes to landscapes to still life and wildlife and I find that I am never at a loss for finding inspiration in nature. -Is there anything you want people to take away from your work? My signature style is one that is forever changing yet remains my own. I want people to feel my paintings. Whether it be the calm of a sunset, the smell of a flower or flow of the sea, I hope those viewing my work will come away with a sense of wonder and the best compliment of my work is when the viewer wants acquire it to make it their own.
Congratulations Chris and thank you for sharing with us!
Congratulations to our People’s Choice Award winner from the Breath of Spring exhibit, Chris Warrington. His springtime image “Robin’s Nest” was voted as your favorite. -How did you discover your talent for your medium? Since childhood I have always been attracted to art. Whether it be sculpture, pottery, lithography, oils, acrylic, charcoal or watercolors I have always had "art" in my life. To further my knowledge and developed my skills, I attended University of Alaska, Umass Amherst and Worcester Art Museum where I majored in art and was exposed to a variety of mediums. -Which artist has influenced you most? Johannes Vermeer
-Apart from creating things what do you do? I am a general contractor specializing in renovations. I went into the business as an extension of my art, taking my creative and artistic sense of design off the canvas and into people's homes. When not working or painting, I enjoy being outdoors and engaging in sport. I consider myself an adventure trail runner, snowboarder and love to climb Mt. Washington on a regular basis.
