The Day of Pentecost ~ Confirmation June 4, 2017 + 9:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord’s Day. By accepting the cross, our Lord Jesus Christ accepted the call to bring God’s life down to the dead, both the dead in body and the dead in spirit. Dying was His glory, His success, His victory, in which He swallowed death that we might swallow life. This great exchange is the life of the Holy Spirit, whom God gives to us in the gifts of Je-sus. He, the Holy Spirit, is the Lord and Giver of life, who works in the life of the church to call, confirm, and finally res-urrect all believers.

When Times Have Changed . . . and It’s a Good Thing Sometime between 1960 and 1980, an old, inadequately conceived world ended, and a fresh, new world began . . . . You see, our parents had never worried about whether we would grow up Christian. The church was the only show in town. On Sundays, the town closed down . . . . Church, home, and state formed a national consortium that worked together to instill “Christian values.” People grew up Christian simply by being lucky enough to be born in places like Greenville, South Carolina . . . . That’s all changed, and for the better. Pastors who listen to their members, particularly to young parents, will hear them saying to their own children, with in-creasing regularity, “Such behavior is fine for everyone else, but not fine for you. You are special. You are different. You have a different story. You have a different set of values. You are a Christian.” And we believe that recognition signals a seismic shift in the world view of our church, which makes all the difference in the world for how we go about the business of being the church. Now our churches are free to embrace our roots, to be a faith community that does not ask the world to do what it can only do for it-self . . . . Christians are not naturally born in places like Greenville or anywhere else. Christians are intentionally made by an adventuresome church, which has again learned to ask the right questions to which Christ alone supplies the right an-swers.

PRELUDE Three Preludes on “O Day of Rest and Gladness”

… Michael D. Costello, Jon Spong, David Maxwell

RINGING OF THE BELLS

Please stand and turn toward the cross as it is carried into the sanctuary.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “O Day of Rest and Gladness” green hymnal #251

GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray . . . O God, on this day you once taught the hearts

of your faithful people by sending them the light of your Holy

Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right

understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy

consolation; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who

lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

C: Amen

Please be seated.

After ten days from the Ascension, which from the first Lord’s Day is the fiftieth day, keep a great festival: for on that day, at the third hour, the Lord Jesus sent on us the gift of the Holy Ghost, and we were filled with His energy, and we “spoke with new tongues, as the Spirit did suggest to us;” and we preached both to Jews and Gentiles, that He is the Christ of God, who is “determined by Him to be the Judge of quick and dead.” ~ Constitu-

tions of the Holy Apos-tles, around 375 A.D.

NEW TESTAMENT Acts of the Apostles 2:1-21 1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one

place. 2And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a

mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they

were sitting. 3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and

rested on each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy

Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them

utterance. 5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout

men from every nation under heaven. 6And at this sound the multi-

tude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one

was hearing them speak in his own language. 7And they were

amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speak-

ing Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own

native language? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents

of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phry-

gia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to

Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11both Jews and proselytes, Cre-

tans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the

mighty works of God.” 12And all were amazed and perplexed, say-

ing to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others mocking

said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with

the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea

and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give

ear to my words. 15For these men are not drunk, as you suppose,

since it is only the third hour of the day. 16But this is what was ut-

tered through the prophet Joel: 17“‘And in the last days it shall be,

God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your

sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall

see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18even on my

male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my

Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show wonders in the

heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and

vapor of smoke; 20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon

Christ con-quered the world. This victory con-sists in His having cre-ated His own Church. In the midst of the vanity and poverty, of the weak-ness and suf-fering, He laid the foun-dations of a “new being.” The Church is Christ’s work on earth; it is the image and abode of His blessed Pres-ence in the world. And on the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended on the Church. He entered into the world in order to abide with us . . . .

to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnifi-

cent day. 21And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon

the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

L: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Please stand and turn towards the Holy Scriptures as they are carried into

the midst of the congregation.

GOSPEL PROCESSION HYMN C: Come, gracious Spirit, heav’nly dove,

With light and comfort from above.

Come, be our guardian and our guide;

O’er ev’ry thought and step preside.

The light of truth to us display,

And make us know and choose your way;

Plant holy fear in ev’ry heart

That we from God may ne’er depart.

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 7th chapter.

37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was

standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has

said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to

receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet

glorified.

P: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

. . . . This is a tremendous and unfa-thomable mystery. He lives and abides cease-lessly in the Church. In the Church we receive the Spirit of adoption. Through the Holy Spirit we become eternally God’s. In the Church our salvation is perfected; the sanctification and trans-figuration, the diviniza-tion of the human race is accom-plished . . . . Outside the Church there is no salva-tion, because salvation is the Church! ~ George

Florovsky, Bible, Church,

Tradition

INVOCATION HYMN “Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord” green hymnal #163

~ RITE OF CONFIRMATION ~

P: Beloved in the Lord: our Lord Jesus Christ said to his apostles,

“All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded

you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

In accordance with our Lord’s bidding, you have been baptized

and catechized in the Christian faith. Jesus said, “Whoever

confesses me before men, I will confess before my Father who

is in heaven. But whoever denies me before men, I will also

deny before my Father who is in heaven.” Lift up your hearts,

On this holy and joyful feast of Pente-cost we give thanks to our Lord God as we celebrate the great un-ending mercy which He made mani-fest on earth in that He revealed from heaven to us poor men His holy Word, which is not a plain and common word, but a special and a different Word, com-pared with the Law of Moses. For this day the Kingdom of Christ began through the Apostles, and was mani-fested through the Gospel for all the world. ~ Martin Luther,

1534 A.D.

7

therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to

what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.

P: Do you this day in the presence of God and of this congrega-

tion acknowledge the gifts that God gave you in your Baptism?

Confirmands: I do.

P: Do you renounce the devil?

Confirmands: Yes, I renounce him.

P: Do you renounce all his works?

Confirmands: Yes, I renounce them.

P: Do you renounce all his ways?

Confirmands: Yes, I renounce them.

P: Do you believe in God the Father?

Confirmands: Yes, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator

of heaven and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

Confirmands: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our

Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy

Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was

buried. He descended into hell. On the third day

he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is

seated at the right hand of the Father. He will

come again to judge the living and the dead.

A “faith” that is confessed is something to be learned, memorized, and known, and something to be accepted on authority, acknowledged as divine truth, and vig-orously de-fended as such against “deniers of the faith” – as well as being of course, obvi-ously and su-premely, a per-sonal and exis-tential declara-tion of obedi-ence and trust in God and in the revealed word of God. ~ Jaroslav Pelikan,

Credo

8

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

Confirmands: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness

of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life

everlasting. Amen

P: Do you hold all the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures to be the

inspired Word of God?

Confirmands: I do.

P: Do you confess the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran

Church, drawn from the Scriptures, as you have learned to

know it from the Small Catechism, to be faithful and true?

Confirmands: I do.

P: Do you intend to hear the Word of God and receive the Lord’s

Supper faithfully?

Confirmands: I do, by the grace of God.

P: Do you intend to live according to the Word of God, and in

faith, word, and deed to remain true to God, Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit, even to death?

Confirmands: I do, by the grace of God.

P: Do you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and

Church and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away

from it?

Confirmands: I do, by the grace of God.

The confirmands kneel. The pastor places his hands on the head of each

confirmand and traces the sign of the holy cross. Afterwards, he reads

each confirmand’s confirmation verse.

Confirmation is our Lord’s idea. He bids us to make disciples by baptizing and teaching (Matthew 28:16-20). First the wa-ter and the baptizing in the Holy Tri-une Name, and now con-firmation re-joices that some intense teaching has also been done, accord-ing to our Lord’s man-date. The joy of baptism and teaching never ends. Life as Jesus’ disciple means wak-ing each day remembering that “I am baptized” and eager to learn what He would have us do as His servants. ~ Pr. Scott

Bruzek, 2005 A.D.

P: ______________, may the almighty God and Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of

the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you

with his grace to life everlasting.

All: Amen

Please stand.

P: Almighty and most merciful Father, in the waters of Holy Bap-

tism you have united your children in the suffering and death

of your Son, Jesus Christ, cleansing them by his blood. Renew

in them the gift of your Holy Spirit, that they may live in daily

repentance with a faith that ever clings to their Savior. Deliver

them from the power of Satan and preserve them from false

and dangerous doctrines, that they may remain faithful in

hearing Christ’s Word and receiving his body and blood.

Grant that, bringing forth the fruits of faith, they may continue

steadfast and victorious to the day when all who have fought

the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness;

through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

All: Amen

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

All: Amen

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for

all people according to their needs.

P: . . . O Holy Spirit,

C: hear our prayer.

. . . and they shall see His face, and His Name shall be on their fore-heads. ~ Revelation

22:4

10

P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,

trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our

Lord.

C: Amen

Please be seated.

Register, and add your name(s). If you are a guest or visitor, please in-

clude your address.

Please stand.

OFFERTORY “O Holy Spirit, Enter In”

An army suc-ceeds, not though trench warfare but through movement, penetration, tactics. Therefore, to speak of the church as a colony is to speak of the colony ... as a people on the move, like Jesus’ first disciples, breathlessly trying to keep up with Je-sus. It is an adventure with many unknowns, internal ar-guments over which turn to take in the road, conver-sations along the way, vis-its to strange places, intro-ductions and farewells, and much looking back and tak-ing stock . . .

11

OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray . . . Almighty God,

C: you have prepared this Supper for our salvation. Send your

Holy Spirit, that we who receive the Lord’s body and blood

may live to the praise of your glory. Amen

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P: It is indeed right and salutary . . . we praise your name and join

their unending hymn:

. . . When we are baptized, we (like the first disciples) are taken on a moving train. As disciples, we become part of a jour-ney that be-gan long be-fore we got here and shall continue long after we are gone... Bap-tism isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of God’s experi-ment with your life. What God will make of you, we know not. Where God will take you, surprise you, we can-not say. This we do know and this we say – God is with you. ~ Hauerwas

and Willi-mon, Resi-dent Aliens

SANCTUS (“Holy”)

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed,

took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and

gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is my body,

which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and

when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink

of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as

often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.

13

THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tres-

passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is

the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen

ACCLAMATION P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup,

C: we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

AGNUS DEI (“Lamb of God”)

Please be seated.

14

The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use

the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion

brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those

not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing.

Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He

joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tre-

mendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our

faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life

and salvation.

The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that

they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body

and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life,

and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.

“O Day Full of Grace” green hymnal #161

Please stand after all have received the sacrament.

Wherever and whenever Christians gather to-gether ... they sing songs – songs of confi-dence and faith, songs of confes-sion and contri-tion, songs of exile and re-birth, songs of sin and salva-tion. The mu-sic of Christian worship is a great cantus firmus [trusty/strong song] extolling God’s glory, praising him for his mighty acts in rescuing his people, and pro-claiming the great central act of God in Jesus Christ, the victory over sin and death that is cele-brated with special joy and intensity each paschal season. ~ Carl Schalk,

Lutheran Worship: History and Practice

16

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: Pour out upon us the spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the

wills of those whom you have fed with one heavenly food;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen

BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.

Please turn toward the cross as it is carried out of the sanctuary.
