~ Park-ViewPoint December 2016 ~ December 2016 Parent/Teacher Conferences and Report Cards Coming Soon Parent/Teacher conferences will occur Thursday and Friday, December 8 and 9. All parents should have already received a specific date and time for their conference. Report cards for students - in grades one and two only - will be sent home Wednesday, December 7. (Kindergarten report cards are distributed in late January. Kindergarten receives two report cards per year, Grades 1-5 receive three report cards per year.) Our district purposefully established this schedule to give parents a chance to read their child's report card at home and then have an opportunity to ask your child's teacher questions about the report card. We realize that standards-based report cards are new to many parents and we want to do what we can to help parents accurately interpret these report cards. Please remember that the standards on the report card are END-OF-YEAR expectations, so it is not expected that our students are meeting end of year standards at this time. Our teachers spend a lot time and effort carefully monitoring the academic progress of your child throughout the year. Every student is assessed individually by our teachers, multiple times a year, providing our teachers with a deep understanding of your child's unique strengths and areas of growth. At your parent/teacher conference your child's teacher will share this growth data with you and will discuss your child's social/emotional growth as well. We are confident that all of our parents will leave the conference with a detailed and data-based presentation of their child's growth across the curriculum. Hour of Code at Parkview Currently there are more jobs in the computer programming/coding field than there are qualified people to fill them. This fact has spawned the creation of "The Hour of Code" across our country. Our second graders at Parkview will be participating this in this initiative. Each second grade class will learn the basic of computer coding during their library time in early December. Each student will use an IPad during this learning experience. If it goes well with grade two, we will consider providing this opportunity to grade one and kindergarten students as well. Ability Awareness Day Easton SEPAC and Parkview are hosting our first Abilities Awareness Day on Friday, December 2. Each second grade classroom will visit six different stations as follows: 1. Vision Impairment/ Braille: 2. Hearing Impairment 3. Developmental Disorders 4. Physical Disability 5. Emotional/Social Disorders 6. Sensory Table

The students will learn more about challenges that many of their peers face on a daily basis and how they work to overcome these challenges and thrive in school and in life. We teach our students understanding and empathy and we teach them to work successfully and productively with all people. We are all different, we all have strengths and challenges. This is a critical life skill to learn and practice at a young age as regardless of what field of work they enter in their future.

The entire field hockey team from Shippensburg State University in Pennsylvania participated in our second grade open circle last week. These girls competed in the Division 2 NCAA National Field Hockey Championship played at Stonehill College. These girls were very inspirational to our second graders and made some real life connections

to our Parkview Constitution.
