The Declaration of Independence: Some Facts
The Committee of Five was the founding Fathers that drafted the declaration of Independence. This committee was presided over by the principal author Thomas Jefferson who was also the third president of the United States
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston were the members of this body.
John Adams was the first vice president and second president of America who also died on Independence Day, 1826 on the same day as Thomas Jefferson. Thus the Committee of Five was a body of honorable and famous men
Date Issues
The declaration of Independence was approved by a closed session of Congress on the 2nd of July 1776
The much publicized date which is the Fourth of July is the date on which this document was finally signed and came to be the date for the celebration of Independence Day.
John Adams continued to promote the 2nd of July as a day of celebrations throughout his life. Most historians also believe that August the 2nd was the day on which the document was finally signed.
